Chapter 10: The Secret My Family Buried
The words on the paper refused to disappear.
*Someone inside our family tried to destroy her before she was even born.*
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
But no matter how many times my eyes moved across the page, the meaning remained the same.
Someone inside my family had been my enemy before I even entered this world.
The room felt smaller.
The walls that had always represented safety suddenly felt like they were closing around me.
“My grandfather wrote this?”” I asked.
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“About me?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the document.
“Why?””
Nobody answered immediately.
That silence hurt more than any explanation could have.
Because silence meant they were afraid of the truth.
My father sat at the end of the table, his hands folded tightly.
Finally, he spoke.
“There are things about the Blackwood family that were kept hidden for a reason.””
I looked at him.
“Protection?””
His eyes lowered.
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No. That’s what everyone keeps saying.””
My voice became stronger.
“You all keep saying you protected me, but nobody asked what I wanted.””
My father looked hurt.
“Elena.””
“I spent eight years married to a man who saw me as a business opportunity because nobody told me the truth.””
Nobody argued.
Because they knew.
The truth was painful.
But it was true.
Marcus picked up the document.
“We need to understand what your grandfather meant.””
Julian was already typing.
“I’m searching archived records.””
Caleb looked at me.
“What did Vanessa say?””
I hesitated.
Then I repeated her words.
“She said my mother was investigating Blackwood Holdings before she died.””
The room went completely silent.
My father’s face changed.
A small reaction.
But I saw it.
“You knew.””
It wasn’t a question.
My father looked away.
“Elena…”
“You knew.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“How long?””
“Since before you were born.””
I stood.
“You knew my mother was looking into something dangerous, and you never told me?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
He didn’t answer.
“From the truth?””
His silence was enough.
I walked to the window.
Outside, the garden was peaceful.
Almost painfully peaceful.
“How did she die?””
My father froze.
Nobody moved.
I turned around.
“I asked you a question.””
His voice became quiet.
“The official report said it was an accident.””
“And unofficially?””
He looked at Marcus.
Then Julian.
Then me.
“Your mother suspected someone close to the family was stealing from Blackwood Holdings.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
“We never proved it.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
My father looked at the floor.
“Your uncle.””
The word hit me like another slap.
My uncle.
My father’s younger brother.
A man I barely remembered.
A man who disappeared from family life years ago.
“Why?””
Marcus answered.
“Because he believed your grandfather chose your father over him.””
I stared.
“Jealousy?””
“Power,” Julian said.
That was always the answer.
Power.
Money.
Control.
The same things that had destroyed my marriage.
The same things that had brought Vanessa into my life.
The same things that had haunted my family for decades.
“Is he alive?””
My father nodded.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Nobody answered.
Then Caleb spoke.
“We need to find him.””
The next twenty-four hours changed everything.
Julian traced financial records.
Marcus contacted old legal connections.
Caleb investigated disappearances and false identities.
And I sat in the middle of it all, realizing something terrifying.
My entire life had been built around a secret.
A secret everyone thought they were protecting me from.
But secrets did not disappear.
They waited.
And eventually, they came back.
Late that night, Julian found something.
He called everyone into the library.
“I found him.””
My father stood immediately.
“Who?””
Julian looked at him.
“Richard Blackwood.””
My uncle.
The man who had vanished fifteen years earlier.
“Where?””
Julian turned the screen around.
A company profile appeared.
Not Richard Blackwood.
A different name.
*Richard Blake.*
CEO.
Private investment firm.
And beside his profile was a familiar face.
Vanessa Laurent.
My blood turned cold.
“No.””
Julian nodded.
“Yes.””
“They’re working together.””
Marcus stared at the screen.
“Impossible.””
“Not impossible.””
Julian pointed at the records.
“They’ve been connected for years.””
My father sat down.
For the first time, I saw him look old.
Not weak.
Just tired.
“I should have known.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He looked at the screen.
“Richard always believed the Blackwood name belonged to him.””
A terrible thought entered my mind.
“Vanessa didn’t just find Adrian.””
Everyone looked at me.
“She found Richard first.””
Silence.
The entire puzzle shifted.
Adrian was never the mastermind.
He was a tool.
A useful one.
A man Vanessa could manipulate because he wanted power.
But Richard…
Richard had history.
He had a reason.
He had patience.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
Unknown number.
A message.
*Your family is finally telling you the truth. Good.*
Another message appeared.
*But they still haven’t told you the whole story.*
Then a photograph.
My mother.
Standing beside Richard.
And Vanessa’s father.
I stared.
My hands became cold.
There was one more message.
*Ask your father why your mother trusted us more than him.*
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
“What happened?”” Marcus asked.
I showed them the phone.
My father’s face lost all color.
Because he knew.
He knew something else.
Something even worse.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
My father whispered:
“Your mother didn’t die because she discovered a secret.””
May you like
A pause.
“She died because she was going to reveal it.””
