Chapter 6: The War Against the Blackwood Legacy

The Blackwood inheritance had always been a mystery.

Not because it was hidden.

Because nobody outside the family truly understood it.

People assumed wealth was about money.

They were wrong.

Money could disappear.

Companies could collapse.

Markets could crash.

But influence?

Trust?

Relationships built over generations?

That was the true power.

My grandfather had built the Blackwood legacy carefully.

Not through greed.

Through reputation.

Through helping people.

Through knowing that power meant nothing if it was not used responsibly.

And now someone wanted to destroy it.

I returned home immediately.

Marcus, Julian, and Caleb were already waiting.

They knew from my face that something had happened.

“What did you find?”” Marcus asked.

I placed the letter on the table.

Nobody spoke while they read.

Julian’s expression changed first.

Then Marcus.

Then Caleb.

The anger in Caleb’s eyes scared me.

Not because I feared him.

Because I knew how much he hated injustice.

“He planned to steal from you,” Caleb said.

I shook my head.

“Not just me.””

I looked at the documents.

“Our family.””

Marcus folded the letter carefully.

“Adrian knew who you were before he married you.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

Julian looked at me.

“That changes everything.””

I felt cold.

“No.””

Marcus nodded.

“He didn’t accidentally discover your identity.””

I stared at them.

“He chose me because of my family?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

For eight years, I had believed Adrian loved me because I was different from everyone else.

Because I didn’t care about money.

Because I saw the person beneath the success.

But maybe I was wrong.

Maybe he saw the Blackwood name.

Maybe he saw an opportunity.

The realization hurt more than the slap.

Because pain from a stranger was easier.

Pain from someone you loved was different.

It changed the way you saw your entire past.

Every memory.

Every conversation.

Every promise.

“Find everything,” Marcus said.

Julian nodded.

“I already started.””

Caleb looked at me.

“What do you want to do?””

That was the question.

The old Elena would have said nothing.

The old Elena would have protected Adrian.

The old Elena would have searched for reasons to forgive him.

But that woman was gone.

I looked at my brothers.

“I want the truth.””

Marcus nodded.

“And then?””

I thought about the ballroom.

The humiliation.

The cameras.

The moment Adrian believed he had broken me.

Then I remembered something important.

I had not survived eight years beside him by being weak.

I survived because I was stronger than he knew.

“Then I want everyone to know who Adrian Whitmore really is.””

The investigation lasted forty-eight hours.

And every hour revealed something darker.

Adrian had created fake investment channels.

Moved company funds.

Used private accounts.

And Vanessa had been helping.

But the biggest discovery came from Julian.

He entered the room late one night holding a file.

“Elena.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He placed it on the table.

“This is why Vanessa targeted Adrian.””

Inside was a document.

A transfer agreement.

My eyes scanned the page.

Then stopped.

The beneficiary name made my heart stop.

*Blackwood Family Trust.*

Julian continued.

“Years ago, your grandfather created a protected trust.””

I nodded.

I knew about it.

“But nobody knew the full details.””

“What details?””

Julian looked at me.

“Only a direct descendant can access certain assets.””

I frowned.

“Meaning?””

“Meaning Vanessa cannot take it.””

I exhaled.

“Then why try?””

Marcus answered.

“Because she doesn’t know that.””

I looked at the documents again.

“She thinks Adrian can transfer it.””

“Yes.””

“And Adrian?””

Julian’s expression hardened.

“He thought marrying you would give him access.””

The room went quiet.

Eight years.

Eight years of marriage.

Eight years of pretending.

All for money.

All for power.

I felt something inside me break.

But this time…

It wasn’t my heart.

It was the last piece of doubt I had.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

Vanessa.

“You finally figured it out.””

I froze.

“You called me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She laughed softly.

“Because I wanted to congratulate you.””

“On what?””

“Finally seeing your husband for what he is.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You’re working with him.””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“I was.””

I stood.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Adrian thought he was using me.””

A pause.

“But I was using him.””

My brothers exchanged looks.

“What do you want, Vanessa?””

Her voice became colder.

“What I’ve always wanted.””

I waited.

“Your family’s legacy.””

The line went silent.

Then she added:

“And now that Adrian has failed…”

A chill ran through me.

“I’ll have to come after you directly.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

For years, I thought Adrian was my greatest enemy.

I was wrong.

Adrian was only a piece on the board.

The real war had just begun.

And Vanessa Laurent had just declared war on the Blackwood family.
