Chapter 7: The Enemy Behind the Smile

For the first time in my life, I understood why my grandfather always told us that power attracted two kinds of people.

Those who wanted to build something.

And those who wanted to take something.

I had spent eight years believing Adrian belonged to the first group.

I was wrong.

But Vanessa Laurent was different.

She didn’t hide behind charm.

She didn’t pretend to love me.

She had looked directly into my eyes and told me exactly what she wanted.

My family’s legacy.

The next morning, the Blackwood estate became a command center.

Lawyers filled the library.

Financial experts reviewed documents.

Security specialists analyzed every movement connected to Adrian and Vanessa.

The same room where I once sat as a child reading fairy tales was now filled with information that could destroy powerful people.

Marcus stood near the fireplace, reading through a stack of reports.

Julian sat at the long table with several computer screens open.

Caleb paced back and forth.

Nobody had slept.

Not because we were afraid.

Because we knew the danger had changed.

Adrian was emotional.

Vanessa was strategic.

And a strategic enemy was always more dangerous.

“She knows too much,” Marcus said.

I looked at him.

“How?””

He placed a document on the table.

“This was found in Adrian’s private files.””

I picked it up.

It was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Information about my family.

My stomach tightened.

“She was investigating us.””

Julian nodded.

“For years.””

I looked at the pages.

My personal history.

My education.

My family relationships.

Even details about my grandfather’s trust.

“She researched me before we met.””

“Yes.””

The realization hurt.

Not because of the information.

Because of the intention behind it.

I remembered our first date.

Adrian had smiled and said:

“I feel like I’ve known you forever.””

I thought it was romantic.

Now I wondered if he meant something else.

He had studied me.

Prepared for me.

Approached me because he already knew exactly who I was.

“He never loved me,” I whispered.

The room became silent.

Marcus walked toward me.

“Elena.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I need to say it.””

I looked down at the documents.

“He didn’t choose me.””

I swallowed.

“He chose access.””

Nobody corrected me.

Because they knew I needed the truth more than comfort.

For years, I had defended Adrian.

Now I needed to stop defending a man who never protected me.

My phone suddenly rang.

Adrian.

Again.

I stared at the screen.

Caleb noticed.

“Do you want me to block him?””

I almost smiled.

“No.””

I answered.

“What do you want?””

His breathing was heavy.

“Elena, listen to me.””

“I’m listening.””

“Vanessa is planning something.””

I looked at my brothers.

“You’re warning me?””

“Yes.””

I laughed softly.

“Why?””

“Because I know what she’s capable of.””

My expression hardened.

“You worked with her.””

“I know.””

“You planned to steal from me.””

“I know.””

“You lied to me for eight years.””

His silence was painful.

But not enough.

“I made terrible choices.””

“No.””

I closed my eyes.

“You made many choices.””

“Elena…”

“Every day, Adrian.””

My voice became colder.

“You woke up and chose to continue lying.””

He didn’t answer.

Then he said:

“She’s going after the Blackwood Trust.””

“I know.””

A pause.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

His voice changed.

“How?””

I almost laughed.

“You’re still underestimating me.””

Another silence.

Then Adrian whispered:

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

That sentence almost made me angry.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was weak.

“You wanted the benefits without the consequences.””

“Elena—”

“Goodbye, Adrian.””

Before I ended the call, he said something that stopped me.

“She has someone inside your family.””

My hand froze.

“What?””

“She knows things she shouldn’t know.””

I stared at the phone.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe you?””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

I looked at Marcus.

Then Julian.

Then Caleb.

“Why should I trust anything you say?””

Adrian’s voice became quiet.

“Because for once, I’m trying to save you.””

I ended the call.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Marcus said:

“He could be lying.””

“Yes.””

“But?””

I looked at the phone.

“But he might not be.””

That was the terrifying part.

Vanessa knew too much.

Too much to be guessing.

Too much to be researching alone.

Someone had been feeding her information.

And if Adrian was telling the truth…

The enemy wasn’t outside the family.

It was closer.

Much closer.

That evening, we held a private family meeting.

Only immediate family.

No lawyers.

No assistants.

No outsiders.

My father entered the room last.

He had been silent since everything happened.

That scared me more than anger.

My father was a man who rarely showed emotion.

But when he looked at me, I saw disappointment.

Not in me.

For me.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

I frowned.

“For what?””

“For not seeing him sooner.””

I shook my head.

“You couldn’t have known.””

He looked at the documents.

“I should have protected you.””

“You raised me to protect myself.””

He smiled sadly.

“And you did.””

The room softened for a moment.

Then Marcus placed a folder on the table.

“We found something.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

He opened the folder.

Inside was an old photograph.

A photograph of my grandfather.

Standing beside another man.

I recognized him immediately.

Victor Laurent.

Vanessa’s father.

My heart dropped.

“What is this?””

Marcus answered:

“Your grandfather and Victor Laurent were partners.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

Julian leaned forward.

“Before the scandal, before Victor disappeared, he worked with Blackwood Holdings.””

I stared at the photograph.

“So this isn’t about my inheritance.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“It’s about revenge.””

A chill moved through me.

Vanessa wasn’t just trying to steal.

She was finishing something her father started.

“She blamed our family.””

“Yes.””

“But why?””

Marcus looked at the documents.

“We’re still finding out.””

I touched the photograph.

Suddenly, everything changed.

The affair.

The marriage.

The trust.

The attack.

It wasn’t just about money.

It was about history.

A war that started before I was born.

May you like

And somehow…

I was standing in the middle of it.
