Chapter 13: The Daughter Who Finally Chose Herself

I did not answer my father’s message.

Not immediately.

For the first time in my life, I allowed myself to sit with my anger.

Not the kind of anger that burned everything around it.

The kind that forced me to see clearly.

I had spent years forgiving people before they even apologized.

I forgave Adrian for working late.

I forgave Adrian for canceling plans.

I forgave Adrian for the coldness that slowly replaced affection.

I forgave him because I loved him.

But somewhere along the way, I forgot something important.

Forgiveness without accountability was not love.

It was permission.

And I had given too many people permission to hurt me.

When I returned to the Blackwood estate, my brothers were waiting.

Nobody asked what happened.

They already knew from my face.

Marcus was the first to speak.

“Did you find the truth?””

I looked at him.

“I found more questions.””

Julian closed his laptop.

“That’s usually how it works.””

I placed the document from Adrian on the table.

My brothers read it carefully.

Caleb’s expression changed first.

“Your father signed this?””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked troubled.

“But we need context.””

“Of course.””

My voice was sharper than I intended.

“Everyone needs context.””

The room became quiet.

I immediately regretted the tone.

Not because I was wrong.

Because my brothers were not the enemy.

They were the only people who had stood beside me without asking for anything.

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You have every right to be angry.””

That was the difference.

Adrian wanted me quiet.

My family wanted me honest.

Julian pointed at the document.

“This signature doesn’t prove betrayal.””

I looked at him.

“Then what does it prove?””

“That your father was involved in something.””

A pause.

“Not necessarily something wrong.””

I sat down.

“I don’t know who to trust anymore.””

Marcus moved closer.

“Then start with yourself.””

Those words stayed with me.

Start with yourself.

Because that was the one person I had forgotten.

Me.

Not Adrian.

Not my family.

Not Vanessa.

Me.

The next morning, I asked my father to meet me.

Alone.

He arrived at the estate looking older than I had ever seen him.

Not because of age.

Because of regret.

“Elena.””

I didn’t invite him to sit.

“What was the document?””

He took a breath.

“A legal agreement.””

“That tells me nothing.””

He looked down.

“It was created after your grandfather’s death.””

“Why?””

“To protect the company.””

“From who?””

Silence.

I already knew.

“Richard.””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why is your signature on something connected to him?””

He sat down slowly.

“Because I was trying to stop him.””

I frowned.

“Explain.””

After all these years, my father finally told me the truth.

When my grandfather died, Richard believed he deserved control of the family empire.

He thought being the oldest son gave him ownership.

But my grandfather disagreed.

He believed leadership should belong to the person who protected the legacy, not the person who wanted power.

That person was my father.

Richard never accepted it.

“He started moving money,” my father said.

“Like Victor Laurent?””

“Yes.””

I understood.

Richard had repeated the same pattern.

He destroyed Victor.

He targeted my mother.

And years later, he came after me.

“He blamed everyone else for his own choices.””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why hide this?””

His eyes filled with pain.

“Because your mother asked me to.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My father looked toward the window.

“Because she knew Richard would come after you.””

A chill moved through me.

“She knew?””

“She discovered that Richard had been researching you before you were even born.””

I felt sick.

“He wanted to use me.””

“Yes.””

“Because of the trust.””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

All those years.

All those secrets.

My mother knew.

She knew danger was coming.

And she tried to protect me.

My father continued.

“She made me promise that if anything happened to her, I would keep you away from this world.””

I whispered:

“And you did.””

“Yes.””

“But it still found me.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

For the first time, I saw my father not as the man who hid the truth.

But as the man who carried it alone.

That didn’t erase the pain.

But it changed something.

Understanding was not forgiveness.

But it was the beginning.

Three days later, we prepared the final move.

Not revenge.

Justice.

Julian had discovered enough financial evidence to expose Richard and Vanessa’s plan.

Marcus had prepared legal action.

Caleb had built a security team to protect witnesses.

But there was one person left.

Adrian.

I met him one final time.

He looked exhausted.

“You’re going to destroy me.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He laughed sadly.

“Everyone says that before they do.””

“I’m not destroying you, Adrian.””

I placed a folder on the table.

“I’m giving you a choice.””

He opened it.

Inside were documents proving everything.

His betrayal.

His financial involvement.

His cooperation with Vanessa.

His face changed.

“What is this?””

“A chance.””

He looked confused.

“You want me to confess.””

“Yes.””

“And if I don’t?””

“Then the evidence speaks for itself.””

He looked at me for a long time.

“You’re different.””

I almost smiled.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m finally myself.””

That hurt him.

I could see it.

Because he realized something.

The woman he thought he controlled had never disappeared.

She had just been waiting.

Adrian looked at the documents.

Then quietly said:

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t answer.

Because an apology after everything was not enough.

But it mattered.

A little.

“Why did you do it?”” I asked.

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I thought being powerful meant never being powerless.””

I looked at him.

“And?””

He smiled sadly.

“And I destroyed the only person who loved me before I understood what I had.””

I stood.

“Goodbye, Adrian.””

As I walked away, I realized something.

The marriage was over.

The betrayal was real.

The pain would always exist.

But it no longer owned me.

May you like

For the first time in years…

I was free.
