Chapter 8: The Truth Buried Beneath the Family Name

The Blackwood family had always been known for one thing.

Honor.

That was why the discovery hurt so much.

Because if Vanessa Laurent was telling the truth about one thing, it was this:

Powerful families had secrets.

Even good families.

Even mine.

The next day, Marcus uncovered the first piece of the truth.

Our grandfather’s old business records had been sealed for decades.

Not hidden.

Protected.

There was a difference.

When I entered the library, Marcus was standing beside the old wooden desk where my grandfather used to work.

He looked exhausted.

That alone told me how serious this was.

“What did you find?””

He handed me a file.

“I found the reason Victor Laurent hated us.””

I opened it.

The documents were old.

Yellowed.

Some handwritten.

The first page contained a business agreement.

Between Blackwood Holdings and Laurent Financial.

I continued reading.

Then I stopped.

“Victor was accused of stealing?””

Marcus nodded.

“Twenty-five years ago.””

“But he didn’t?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

That meant something.

“Marcus.””

He sighed.

“No.””

My heart tightened.

“No?””

“He did something wrong.””

I stared.

The truth was rarely simple.

“What did he do?””

“He moved company funds without approval.””

“Why?””

“That’s what nobody knew.””

I looked through the documents.

“And my grandfather?””

“He reported it.””

I understood.

Victor lost everything.

His reputation.

His company.

His future.

And he blamed the Blackwoods.

“But if Victor was guilty…”

Marcus looked at me.

“Then Vanessa’s revenge is based on a lie.””

A lie that had destroyed lives.

I sat down.

For the first time, I felt something unexpected.

Not anger.

Sadness.

Because somewhere along the way, a family had fallen apart because someone refused to accept the truth.

But then Julian entered.

And one look at his face told me there was more.

“What happened?””

He placed his tablet on the desk.

“We found Vanessa’s next move.””

I looked at the screen.

A news article draft.

Not published yet.

The headline was enough.

*Blackwood Family Accused of Destroying Laurent Legacy.*

My blood ran cold.

“She’s going public.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Tonight.””

I stood.

“She wants to control the narrative.””

Julian nodded.

“She knows if she makes herself look like the victim, people will question us.””

Marcus looked serious.

“She’s preparing a media war.””

I almost smiled.

A media war.

That was something Adrian understood.

Vanessa understood too.

But there was one thing they both forgot.

The truth had power.

That night, Vanessa released her statement.

It spread instantly.

She didn’t mention Adrian.

She barely mentioned the affair.

Instead, she presented herself as a woman seeking justice.

A daughter trying to restore her father’s destroyed name.

And the public reacted exactly how she expected.

People love simple stories.

A villain.

A victim.

A battle.

And suddenly, the Blackwoods became the villains.

My phone filled with messages.

Some supportive.

Some hateful.

Some accusing me of protecting my family’s wealth.

I read them quietly.

Then I put the phone down.

Julian watched me.

“You okay?””

“Yes.””

He raised an eyebrow.

“That was too fast.””

I smiled faintly.

“I’m learning.””

“Learning what?””

“That people will believe anything when they only hear one side.””

The next morning, I made a decision.

I would not hide.

For years, I had avoided the spotlight.

I let Adrian speak.

I let people assume.

I let him become the face of everything we built.

No more.

I scheduled a press conference.

Everyone told me it was risky.

Marcus warned me.

“Once you step in front of those cameras, you can’t control what happens.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

Julian asked:

“Are you sure?””

I looked at my reflection in the mirror.

For the first time in years, I saw myself clearly.

Not Adrian’s wife.

Not the quiet woman behind him.

Elena Blackwood.

“I’m sure.””

The room was filled with reporters.

Cameras flashed.

Questions shouted.

Then I walked onto the stage.

The noise stopped.

I looked directly at the cameras.

“My name is Elena Blackwood.””

The room became silent.

“I have avoided public attention my entire life because I believed my actions mattered more than my name.””

I paused.

“But recent events have forced me to speak.””

I took a breath.

“My husband betrayed me.””

The cameras flashed.

“He humiliated me publicly.””

More flashes.

“But this is not only about my marriage.””

I looked directly into the lens.

“This is about truth.””

I explained nothing about revenge.

Nothing about power.

Only facts.

Documents.

Evidence.

Timeline.

When I finished, nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then a reporter raised his hand.

“Mrs. Blackwood, are you saying Vanessa Laurent is lying?””

I looked at the cameras.

“I am saying everyone deserves the truth.””

Another reporter shouted:

“Did your family destroy hers?””

I answered:

“My family has spent generations building. If someone believes we committed wrongdoing, they should present evidence.””

A pause.

“Not stories.””

The room erupted.

But I stayed calm.

Because I knew something.

Vanessa wanted a war.

She wanted emotions.

Drama.

Chaos.

But she had made one mistake.

She underestimated how prepared the Blackwoods were.

And she underestimated me.

After the press conference, I returned home.

Waiting for me was a message.

From an unknown number.

Only one sentence.

*You’re closer to the truth than Adrian ever was.*

Below it was a photograph.

A photograph of my grandfather.

And beside him…

A woman I had never seen before.

May you like

My heart stopped.

Because the woman looked exactly like me.
