Chapter 9: The Name Hidden in the Documents
Marcus spent the next hour trying to understand what Vanessa had just said.
Someone was watching the account.
Someone knew about the money.
Someone had access to information that was supposed to remain private.
And now he had a terrifying question.
Who?
His attorney, Daniel Reeves, arrived that afternoon.
Daniel had handled Marcus’s business matters for almost ten years.
He was one of the few people Marcus trusted completely.
When Marcus explained everything, Daniel became serious.
“I need to see the documents.””
Marcus handed him the letter.
The journal.
The account information.
The notes.
Daniel read silently.
Minutes passed.
Then he looked up.
“Your wife was concerned.””
Marcus nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
He tapped the journal.
“She wasn’t just worried about Vanessa.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel opened another document.
A legal file.
One Marcus had never seen.
“Your wife contacted me three months before she passed away.””
Marcus stared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Because she specifically asked me not to.””
“Why?””
“Because she believed telling you would make things worse.””
Marcus stood.
“What things?””
Daniel looked toward Nia.
Then lowered his voice.
“She believed someone was manipulating your family finances.””
Marcus felt anger.
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then placed a paper on the table.
A name was written at the bottom.
Marcus read it.
And his face changed.
Because it wasn’t Vanessa’s name.
It was someone else.
Someone close.
Someone he had trusted.
“What is this?”” Marcus whispered.
Daniel sighed.
“Your wife discovered unusual transfers.””
“From where?””
“Family accounts.””
Marcus looked confused.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not if someone had access.””
Marcus looked through the papers.
There were records.
Small amounts.
Then larger ones.
Money moved over time.
Not enough to immediately attract attention.
But enough to build a pattern.
Nia looked worried.
“Dad?””
Marcus quickly closed the folder.
“It’s okay.””
But it wasn’t.
Not anymore.
Because the truth was becoming bigger than Vanessa.
Bigger than the shoes.
Bigger than the missing necklace.
This had been happening for years.
Daniel pointed to one document.
“Your wife found this shortly before she passed.””
Marcus looked.
It was a handwritten note.
One sentence.
I know who is doing this.
Marcus’s heart raced.
“Who?””
Daniel shook his head.
“She never told me.””
“Why?””
“Because she wanted proof first.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She had been standing quietly.
Watching.
Then she spoke.
“I know.””
Everyone turned.
Marcus stared.
“You know who?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“Yes.””
The room froze.
“Who?”” Marcus asked.
Vanessa swallowed.
Then whispered a name.
A name Marcus never expected.
A name that connected the missing money, the hidden documents, and the years of secrets.
And before Marcus could react…
Nia noticed something on the table.
A photograph.
A photograph that had fallen out of the folder.
Her face went pale.
“Dad…”
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
She picked up the picture.
Her hands trembled.
“I know this person.””
Marcus took the photo.
And his blood ran cold.
May you like
Because the person standing beside his late wife in the picture…
Was the last person he expected to be involved.
