Chapter 6: The Truth Vanessa Buried

Nia held the envelope with both hands.

She didn’t open it immediately.

Marcus understood why.

Sometimes the truth was easier to chase than to actually face.

Because once you knew something, you couldn’t unknow it.

The little girl who had spent years wondering why her mother’s things disappeared was now standing in front of proof.

Her mother had never forgotten her.

Someone else had tried to make her believe she had.

“Do you want me to read it with you?”” Marcus asked.

Nia nodded.

They sat together.

Vanessa remained standing across the room.

Watching.

Waiting.

Marcus opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was a letter.

The first sentence made Nia cover her mouth.

My sweet Nia,

If you are reading this, I hope your father is beside you.

Marcus looked down.

His eyes burned.

Because even from beyond the grave, his wife had known the one thing their daughter would need most.

A father who listened.

The letter continued.

I want you to remember something. You were never difficult. You were never too much. You were never a burden.

Nia started crying.

Marcus wrapped an arm around her.

Those were words she needed to hear.

Words she should have heard every day.

The letter went on.

Your heart is bigger than most people will ever understand. Please do not let anyone convince you that you deserve less because you are quiet.

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

Because that was exactly what had happened.

Vanessa had not taken away only objects.

She had slowly taken away Nia’s confidence.

Then they reached the part that changed everything.

I have noticed things since Vanessa moved in.

Marcus stopped.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

Marcus looked up.

“No.””

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

“Yes, I do.””

His voice was calm.

“I’m reading my wife’s final words to our daughter.””

Vanessa looked shaken.

Marcus continued.

She is kind to everyone, but I worry she is learning to accept being treated unfairly. Please watch carefully.

Marcus’s hand tightened around the paper.

Then he read the next line.

Especially when I am no longer here to protect her.

The room went silent.

Nia cried quietly.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Because his wife had trusted him.

And he had failed to see what was happening.

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“I was trying.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

“I was trying to help.””

Nia looked confused.

Vanessa continued.

“You don’t understand what it’s like raising a child who isn’t yours.””

The words hung in the air.

Marcus stared.

Because Vanessa had finally said what she truly believed.

Not “our daughter.””

Not “my child.””

A child who wasn’t hers.

Marcus shook his head.

“There it is.””

Vanessa looked defensive.

“What?””

“The truth.””

“I didn’t mean it like that.””

“But you did.””

She became emotional.

“I sacrificed for this family.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“And Nia?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Marcus looked at his daughter.

“Nia, go upstairs for a minute.””

She hesitated.

“Dad?””

“I need to talk to Vanessa.””

Nia nodded and left.

The moment she disappeared, Marcus turned back.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked confused.

“Why what?””

“Why did you treat her differently?””

“I didn’t.””

“You did.””

“No.””

“You bought your children everything and told my daughter to put back a pair of shoes she needed.””

Vanessa looked away.

“It wasn’t about shoes.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

She immediately realized she had said too much.

“What did you mean?””

Vanessa stayed silent.

Marcus stepped closer.

“What wasn’t about shoes?””

Her face changed.

Then she whispered:

“Your wife always made sure Nia had everything.””

Marcus stared.

“Yes.””

“She had her trust.””

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa looked angry now.

“She left things for Nia. She left money. She left instructions.””

Marcus felt the room shift.

“What instructions?””

Vanessa said nothing.

“Vanessa.””

She looked toward the stairs.

Then back at him.

“There were things you didn’t know.””

Marcus’s heart started racing.

“What things?””

Before Vanessa could answer, Nia appeared at the top of the stairs.

Her face was pale.

She had heard enough.

“Dad…”

Marcus turned.

“What happened?””

Nia held something in her hand.

Something from the box.

A small key.

“I found this inside Mom’s letter.””

Marcus walked toward her.

“What does it open?””

Nia looked down.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus took the key.

And then he noticed something engraved on it.

A word.

The name of a bank.

Vanessa’s expression changed instantly.

Marcus saw it.

And he knew.

Whatever his wife had left behind…

Whatever Vanessa had hidden…

It was not just memories.

It was something valuable.

May you like

Something Vanessa had been trying to keep from Nia.

And now Marcus was finally going to find out why.
