Chapter 28: The Final Move

Marcus sat completely still.

The words echoed in his mind.

“But who protected you?””

For years, he had believed his role was simple.

Protect Nia.

Protect the family.

Keep everything together.

He had never considered that he could become the target.

That someone could build a plan around his trust, his grief, and his desire to keep peace.

The man sitting across from him had not just studied his finances.

He had studied Marcus.

He knew his habits.

His weaknesses.

His decisions.

He knew Marcus would sign documents when he was overwhelmed.

He knew Marcus would trust people who claimed they were helping.

And he knew Marcus would spend years blaming himself before questioning others.

Daniel carefully picked up the file.

“Marcus.””

He didn’t respond.

“Look at this.””

Marcus finally looked down.

The document was a legal agreement.

A contingency plan.

A transfer of authority.

A hidden mechanism that could activate under specific circumstances.

Daniel read silently.

Then his expression changed.

“This is serious.””

Marcus looked at him.

“How serious?””

Daniel closed the folder.

“Serious enough that if this had been triggered, you could have lost control over major decisions involving your assets.””

Marcus felt cold.

“And Nia?””

Daniel looked at the document.

“That was always the final objective.””

The room became quiet.

The man across from them smiled.

“You’re finally understanding.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What was the plan?””

The man shrugged.

“Plans change.””

“No.””

Marcus’s voice was calm.

“You spent years building this.””

The man leaned back.

“You think everything is about money.””

Marcus stared.

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

The answer surprised him.

The man continued.

“It was about influence.””

Marcus frowned.

“Explain.””

“You built something valuable. A family. A business. A reputation.””

A pause.

“But you were too emotional to control it.””

Marcus almost laughed.

“So you thought you should?””

The man smiled.

“Someone had to.””

That sentence told Marcus everything.

This person didn’t believe they had done something wrong.

They believed they were entitled.

Like Ethan.

Like the people who decided they knew what was best.

Marcus stood.

“You don’t get to decide who deserves control over my life.””

The man looked amused.

“Do you really think you still have control?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

The man smiled.

“You can threaten me with lawyers, but you’re too late.””

Marcus studied him.

“Why?””

“Because the final step has already started.””

Marcus froze.

“What final step?””

The man didn’t answer.

Daniel immediately checked his phone.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

He looked at Marcus.

“There was an attempted transfer.””

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

“When?””

“Minutes ago.””

The man smiled.

“You see?””

Marcus realized.

This meeting wasn’t accidental.

It was a distraction.

Someone else was moving.

Marcus immediately called his security team.

Then he called Nia.

She answered quickly.

“Dad?””

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Stay there.””

Her voice changed.

“What happened?””

“Nothing you need to worry about.””

A pause.

Marcus hated saying that.

Because he knew those words had caused so much pain.

So he corrected himself.

“Actually, I need you to know. Something is happening, but we are handling it.””

Nia was quiet.

Then:

“Okay.””

The trust in her voice nearly broke him.

Because she trusted him again.

Something he never wanted to lose.

When Marcus returned home, he found Vanessa waiting.

She looked terrified.

“What happened?””

Marcus looked at her.

“You tell me.””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Someone tried to move assets.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I didn’t know.””

Marcus believed her.

And that surprised him.

Because after everything, he could finally see the difference.

Vanessa had made terrible choices.

But she wasn’t the person controlling everything.

“I need your help.””

She looked shocked.

“With what?””

“Finding out what Ethan knows.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“I can do that.””

For the first time, they were not fighting.

They were facing the same problem.

That night, Daniel discovered the attempted transfer had been stopped.

But there was one problem.

The person behind it had disappeared.

No trace.

No explanation.

Only one message left behind.

You protected the girl.

Now protect yourself.

Marcus stared at the message.

Because it was not a threat.

It was a warning.

Someone wanted him afraid.

Someone wanted him distracted.

Someone wanted him to make a mistake.

But Marcus was done making mistakes.

The next morning, he made a decision.

May you like

He would not hide anymore.

He would bring everything into the light.
