Chapter 10: The Person Behind the Hidden Truth

Marcus stared at the photograph in his hand.

For several seconds, he couldn’t process what he was seeing.

The picture was old.

The edges were slightly worn.

The colors had faded.

But the people in it were clear.

His wife.

And someone else.

Someone Marcus knew.

Someone he had trusted.

Someone who had been welcomed into his home.

His hand tightened around the photograph.

“No.””

The word escaped before he even realized he had spoken.

Nia looked up at him.

“Dad?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

His eyes stayed locked on the person standing beside his late wife.

Daniel watched his reaction carefully.

“You recognize him.””

It wasn’t a question.

Marcus slowly nodded.

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

The air heavier.

Because the person in the picture was not a stranger.

It was his own brother.

Ethan Bennett.

The man Marcus had defended for years.

The man who had stood beside him after his wife died.

The man who had told him, “You need to focus on being a father. I’ll help you handle everything else.””

Marcus remembered those words now.

And suddenly they sounded different.

Not supportive.

Calculated.

“No,” Marcus repeated.

Vanessa looked down.

Marcus turned toward her.

“You knew.””

She didn’t answer.

“You knew Ethan was involved?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I knew he knew about the account.””

Marcus felt betrayed.

“You let me believe it was just you?””

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew something.””

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus walked toward the window.

For years, he had believed his family was falling apart because of grief.

Because losing his wife had changed everyone.

Now he wondered if someone had used that grief.

Used his vulnerability.

Used Nia’s silence.

Daniel picked up the photograph.

“When was this taken?””

Marcus looked.

He recognized the location.

A charity event.

Six months before his wife passed away.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because Ethan told me he barely knew my wife’s financial affairs.””

Daniel remained quiet.

And that silence said everything.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What happened?””

She sat down.

For the first time since this nightmare started, she looked exhausted.

“I didn’t want to tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

Marcus stared.

“Afraid of what?””

“Of losing everything.””

Nia looked confused.

“Everything?””

Vanessa looked at her.

Then away.

“When your mother died, everyone looked at me like I was replacing her.””

Marcus didn’t respond.

Because he knew that wasn’t entirely false.

But it wasn’t an excuse.

Vanessa continued.

“Your wife trusted Ethan with some financial paperwork before she got sick.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he helped her organize some documents.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“That would make sense. Ethan worked in finance.””

Marcus remembered.

His brother had always presented himself as the responsible one.

The expert.

The person who knew how to handle money.

“So what happened?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“He found out about the account.””

“What account?””

“The one for Nia.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“And?””

“He became interested.””

Daniel looked at the papers.

“Interested how?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“He said it was unfair.””

Marcus felt anger rise.

“Unfair?””

“He said Nia already had your protection. Your home. Your support.””

Her voice lowered.

“He said the money should benefit the whole family.””

Marcus stared.

That sentence sounded exactly like something someone would say when they wanted to take something that wasn’t theirs.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“I listened.””

Silence.

Nia looked at her.

“You helped him?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I thought I was protecting my children.””

Marcus looked at her.

“And what about Nia?””

Vanessa had no answer.

That was the answer.

Marcus walked away.

He needed space.

Because he was angry.

Not just at Vanessa.

At himself.

For trusting the wrong people.

For missing his daughter’s pain.

For allowing others to decide what Nia deserved.

That night, Marcus barely slept.

At 3:00 in the morning, he found himself sitting in the kitchen.

The same place where he had once watched Nia eat breakfast before school.

The same place where he had missed the signs.

He opened the journal again.

And this time, he noticed something.

A page number.

The pages were not in order.

Someone had removed sections.

Marcus carefully checked the binding.

The journal had been altered.

Someone had taken pages out.

Then he noticed a small mark near the back.

A note written faintly in pencil.

Not all secrets are hidden in words.

Some are hidden in what disappears.

Marcus stared.

His wife knew.

She knew someone might remove things.

Someone might erase evidence.

And she had created a trail.

A trail leading somewhere.

The next morning, Marcus called Daniel.

“I need everything.””

Daniel understood.

“Everything?””

“Yes.””

“Bank records. Legal documents. Property records. All of it.””

Daniel paused.

“Marcus.””

“What?””

“If this is what we think it is…”

“I know.””

“It could become a legal battle.””

Marcus looked toward Nia’s bedroom door.

Then answered:

“Then I’ll fight.””

May you like

Because for six years, Nia had been fighting alone.

Now she wouldn’t have to.
