Chapter 18: The Betrayal Behind the Betrayal

Marcus left the restaurant with one question repeating in his mind.

Who?

Not Ethan.

Not Vanessa.

Someone else.

Someone closer.

Someone his wife trusted.

The list of possibilities became smaller.

And that made it worse.

Because the people left were the people who had been there during the hardest moments.

The people who had comforted them.

The people who had said they cared.

When Marcus returned home, he found Daniel waiting.

“You look like you saw something.””

Marcus placed his keys down.

“I talked to Ethan.””

Daniel immediately became alert.

“What did he say?””

Marcus took a breath.

“He said someone helped him.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who?””

Marcus looked toward the documents.

“That’s what I need to find out.””

They reviewed everything again.

The bank records.

The legal documents.

The recordings.

Then Daniel noticed something.

“Wait.””

Marcus looked up.

“What?””

Daniel pointed at a date.

“This transaction happened before Ethan had access.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means he wasn’t the first person involved.””

Marcus felt a chill.

The betrayal went deeper.

Daniel continued searching.

Then he found something.

A signature.

A name.

Marcus looked.

And his expression changed.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You know this person?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Marcus stared at the signature.

Because the person connected to the earliest transaction…

Was someone his wife trusted.

Someone who had helped them.

Someone who had been treated like family.

The family doctor.

Dr. Samuel Carter.

Marcus remembered.

Samuel had treated his wife during her illness.

He had been there through hospital visits.

He had been the person who explained her condition.

He had been the person Marcus thanked for helping them through the darkest time of their lives.

But now his name was on a financial document.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Marcus.””

“No.””

His voice became firm.

“He saved my wife.””

Daniel looked at him.

“And maybe that’s why nobody questioned him.””

The words hit hard.

Because trust was exactly what made betrayal possible.

Marcus needed answers.

They contacted Samuel.

At first, he sounded surprised.

Then nervous.

When Marcus asked about the documents, the silence lasted too long.

“Samuel?””

Finally, the doctor answered.

“I was hoping this day would never come.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“You knew.””

Samuel sighed.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

“How?””

“Your wife asked me to help.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“She knew someone was watching her accounts.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Then why is your name connected?””

Samuel hesitated.

“Because I helped her create a trap.””

Marcus went silent.

A trap.

Not a crime.

Not betrayal.

A trap.

“What kind of trap?””

Samuel lowered his voice.

“One designed to reveal who was trying to take from Nia.””

Marcus felt a wave of relief.

But it disappeared quickly.

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””

“Because your wife was afraid you would confront them too early.””

Marcus remembered the message.

Do not trust the person who claims they are protecting Nia.

Maybe it wasn’t a warning about Samuel.

Maybe it was about someone else.

“Samuel.””

“Yes?””

“Who were you trying to catch?””

A long silence.

Then Samuel answered:

“Someone who had access to every part of your family.””

Marcus waited.

“Someone who knew your wife’s schedule.””

Marcus’s heart tightened.

“Someone who knew when she was alone.””

The room went silent.

Because now the truth had changed.

This was no longer about money.

Someone had been close enough to know everything.

Someone had been close enough to manipulate everyone.

And someone had been close enough to hurt Marcus’s wife.

Before hanging up, Samuel said one final thing.

“Marcus…”

“What?””

“Your wife didn’t leave one final message.””

Marcus frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“She left two.””

Marcus froze.

“Where is the second one?””

Samuel answered quietly:

“The second message was hidden somewhere only Nia would find.””

Marcus looked toward his daughter’s room.

May you like

Because if Samuel was right…

Then Nia had been carrying the final piece of the truth all along.
