Chapter 15: The Guardian Nobody Knew About

Marcus repeated the name in his head.

Again.

And again.

Because it didn’t make sense.

The person Vanessa named was not a lawyer.

Not a banker.

Not a family member.

Not someone Marcus would ever have considered.

It was someone who had been in their lives quietly.

Someone who had always stayed in the background.

The family’s longtime housekeeper.

Grace.

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“Grace?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Explain.””

Vanessa sat down.

“She was there when your wife was sick.””

Marcus remembered.

Grace had worked for their family for years.

She had been there during the hardest moments.

She helped with Nia.

She cooked meals.

She sat with his wife during hospital visits.

“She trusted Grace?””

Vanessa nodded.

“More than she trusted almost anyone.””

Marcus felt something shift.

Because suddenly everything connected.

Grace had always been loyal.

Always protective.

Always quiet.

But Marcus had never imagined she was holding a secret.

“Where is she?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus frowned.

“You don’t know?””

“She left after your wife passed away.””

Marcus remembered.

He had always assumed Grace left because the house was too painful.

But now…

Maybe there was another reason.

Daniel immediately started searching.

Within hours, they found an old contact number.

Grace answered.

At first, she said nothing.

Then Marcus heard her voice.

“Marcus?””

His chest tightened.

“Grace.””

Silence.

Then:

“You found out.””

The words confirmed everything.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Grace sighed.

“Because your wife asked me not to.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed someone was listening.””

Marcus looked around.

Even now, the idea felt impossible.

But after everything?

Nothing felt impossible anymore.

“Grace, I need the truth.””

A long pause.

Then she said:

“I have been waiting six years for you to ask.””

Marcus felt emotional.

Six years.

Six years of secrets.

Six years of silence.

“Where are you?””

Grace gave him an address.

An hour later, Marcus, Nia, and Daniel arrived.

Grace looked older.

Tired.

But the same warmth remained in her eyes.

The moment she saw Nia, she cried.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

Nia immediately hugged her.

Because even after all these years…

She remembered.

Grace held her tightly.

“I’m sorry.””

Nia whispered:

“For what?””

Grace looked at Marcus.

“For not doing more.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Tell me what happened.””

Grace invited them inside.

Then she brought out a locked box.

Another box.

Another piece of the past.

“I kept this because your wife told me the truth might disappear.””

Marcus looked at it.

“What’s inside?””

Grace unlocked it.

Documents.

A letter.

And a small recording device.

Marcus stared.

“What is that?””

Grace looked serious.

“Your wife recorded a message.””

Nia’s eyes widened.

“For me?””

Grace nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus felt emotional.

“How long have you had this?””

“Six years.””

“Why didn’t you give it to us?””

Grace looked at him.

“Because she gave me one instruction.””

“What?””

Grace picked up the recording device.

“She said: ‘Only give this to Marcus when he finally understands he has to protect Nia from everyone.’”

The words hit him.

Because his wife knew.

She knew Marcus’s biggest weakness.

He wanted to believe people were good.

Even when they weren’t.

Grace handed him the device.

Marcus pressed play.

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then a familiar voice.

His wife.

Marcus froze.

“Marcus…”

His eyes filled instantly.

Nia grabbed his hand.

The recording continued.

“If you are hearing this, then my biggest fear came true.””

Marcus couldn’t breathe.

His wife’s voice continued.

“I need you to know something.””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who hurt our family is closer than you think.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Then Grace.

Then Nia.

Because they had finally reached the truth.

But before the message continued…

The recording stopped.

The battery died.

Everyone froze.

Grace looked shocked.

“That’s impossible.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

“I replaced that battery years ago.””

Daniel checked the device.

Then looked up.

His face changed.

“Marcus.””

“What?””

Daniel held the device carefully.

“The battery was removed recently.””

The room went silent.

Someone had found it.

Someone had tried to stop the message.

And now Marcus knew one thing for certain.

May you like

The person who had been hiding the truth for six years…

Was still watching.
