Chapter 27: The Beginning of the Betrayal

Marcus spent the entire night studying the photograph.

The location.

The people.

The date.

Everything.

The picture had been taken years earlier.

Before Vanessa.

Before the missing documents.

Before the hidden accounts.

Before anyone suspected anything.

And that meant one thing.

The plan started long before anyone realized.

Daniel helped enhance the image.

The logo in the background became clearer.

A private investment company.

One Marcus recognized.

One his family had used for years.

Marcus stared.

“This is where it began.””

Daniel nodded.

“Looks like it.””

They searched the company records.

And slowly, the truth appeared.

The same people connected to the hidden transfers had worked there.

The same people who had access to information.

The same people who knew about family finances.

Marcus felt sick.

“How did I never see this?””

Daniel answered honestly.

“Because you trusted the people you hired.””

Marcus looked away.

Trust.

That word had followed him through everything.

His greatest strength.

His greatest weakness.

Then Daniel found something else.

A meeting record.

A private meeting.

Held months before Marcus’s wife died.

The attendees included Ethan.

Samuel.

The financial advisor.

And one more person.

The person whose name appeared everywhere.

The person who had been hidden.

Marcus stared.

The name was finally clear.

And this time, he didn’t recognize it.

Daniel looked at him.

“That’s good.””

Marcus frowned.

“Good?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because if you don’t know them personally, they can’t manipulate you emotionally.””

Marcus understood.

The enemy had always used relationships.

Trust.

History.

Love.

This person didn’t have that advantage.

But they had something else.

Access.

They had information.

They had connections.

They had patience.

Marcus contacted the company.

The response came quickly.

The person was still working there.

Still active.

Still handling accounts.

Marcus couldn’t believe it.

Someone who had been involved for years was still inside the system.

Waiting.

Watching.

The next step was obvious.

They needed to confront them.

But Marcus wanted to do it carefully.

No anger.

No accusations.

Only truth.

When they arrived at the office, the person greeted them calmly.

Too calmly.

“Marcus.””

He smiled.

“It’s been a long time.””

Marcus studied him.

Because now he understood.

The most dangerous people were not always the loudest.

Sometimes they were the ones who smiled while everything collapsed.

“We need to talk.””

The man nodded.

“About Nia?””

Marcus froze.

Because he had not mentioned her name.

The man smiled slightly.

“I knew eventually you would find out.””

Daniel immediately noticed.

“You expected this.””

The man sat down.

“Yes.””

Marcus stared.

“How?””

“Because your wife was smarter than everyone thought.””

Marcus felt anger.

“Don’t talk about her.””

The man looked at him.

“She knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That eventually, someone would uncover the truth.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Then why do it?””

The man sighed.

“Because people like your wife always believed love was enough.””

Marcus stared.

“What does that mean?””

“It means she protected people who didn’t deserve protection.””

The words were cold.

Marcus realized something.

This person didn’t hate them.

They simply didn’t value them.

The man opened a drawer.

Removed a file.

And placed it on the desk.

“This is what you’re looking for.””

Marcus didn’t touch it.

“Why give it to me?””

The man smiled.

“Because you’re already too late.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“What?””

The man leaned back.

“The agreement was only the beginning.””

Daniel opened the file.

Inside was one document.

One sentence highlighted.

Control transfers upon incapacity.

Marcus felt his heart stop.

Because suddenly he understood.

This entire plan was never designed to steal from Nia after his wife died.

It was designed for Marcus.

They had been waiting.

Waiting for him to make one mistake.

Waiting for him to lose control.

Waiting for the moment when they could take everything.

And the man’s final words confirmed it.

“Your wife protected Nia.””

May you like

A pause.

“But who protected you?””
