Chapter 14: The Conversation That Changed Everything

Marcus barely slept after watching the video.

Every time he closed his eyes, he heard Ethan’s voice.

“She won’t have time.””

Those words followed him.

Because they weren’t about money.

They weren’t about documents.

They were about his wife.

His wife had known.

She had been afraid.

And while she was trying to protect Nia, Marcus had been living beside people who were betraying him.

The next morning, Nia found him sitting in the kitchen.

“You’re thinking about Mom.””

Marcus looked up.

“Yes.””

“She was brave.””

Marcus nodded.

“She was.””

Nia sat beside him.

“Did she know she was going to die?””

The question hurt.

Marcus took a moment.

“I don’t know.””

Nia looked at the table.

“But she knew something was wrong.””

“Yes.””

A tear rolled down Nia’s cheek.

“I wish I remembered more.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“You remember enough.””

“What if I forget things about her?””

Marcus reached for her hand.

“You won’t.””

“How do you know?””

“Because she left pieces of herself everywhere.””

Nia looked at him.

“Where?””

Marcus smiled sadly.

“In you.””

For the first time in days, Nia smiled.

But the moment didn’t last.

Because Daniel entered the room.

His expression was serious.

“Marcus.””

He immediately knew.

“What happened?””

Daniel placed a folder down.

“The flash drive was accessed.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“Someone tried to open the backup files.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at him.

“We’re trying to find out.””

Marcus stood.

“Can they delete it?””

“Not anymore.””

“Why?””

“Because I made copies.””

Marcus nodded.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

No one spoke.

Only silence.

Then a voice.

“You should stop looking.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Who is this?””

“You already know.””

The call ended.

Marcus stared at the phone.

Daniel immediately asked:

“Was that a threat?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

That was the moment everything changed.

Because now the truth wasn’t just uncomfortable.

It was dangerous.

Marcus contacted security.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he had Nia to protect.

By afternoon, they discovered something else.

The person who accessed the flash drive wasn’t Ethan.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It was someone else.

Someone connected to the investment company.

The same person from the documents.

Daniel placed the information in front of Marcus.

“This person has been covering financial movements for years.””

Marcus studied the file.

“How close were they to my wife?””

“Very.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at him.

“They worked together.””

That surprised Marcus.

“My wife trusted them?””

“Yes.””

The betrayal became harder to understand.

Because everyone involved had been someone his wife trusted.

Someone they invited into their lives.

That evening, Marcus found Vanessa packing a suitcase.

He stood in the doorway.

“What are you doing?””

She froze.

“I’m leaving.””

Marcus looked at the suitcase.

“Why?””

She laughed softly.

“Because everyone hates me now.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That’s not true.””

Vanessa looked surprised.

“You don’t?””

Marcus thought about it.

“I’m hurt.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

“But I need answers.””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“I made mistakes.””

“Yes.””

“But I never wanted Nia hurt.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then why did you let it happen?””

She had no answer.

Finally, she whispered:

“Because I was angry.””

“At me?””

“No.””

She looked upstairs.

“At her.””

Marcus felt disappointed.

“You were angry at a child?””

Vanessa cried.

“I was angry that she had something I never had.””

“What?””

“A mother who loved her completely.””

The confession was painful.

Because for the first time, Marcus saw the real wound inside Vanessa.

Not an excuse.

A wound.

But wounds did not justify hurting others.

“I need you to tell me everything.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“About Ethan?””

“Yes.””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“There’s something you don’t know.””

Marcus waited.

“When your wife created the account for Nia, she also created a legal protection.””

“What kind?””

“A condition.””

Marcus frowned.

“What condition?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“She knew someone might try to take it.””

“And?””

“She created a backup plan.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What backup plan?””

Vanessa whispered:

“She placed control of the account with someone else.””

Marcus froze.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Someone Ethan can’t touch.””

Marcus waited.

Then she said the name.

And Marcus immediately understood why Ethan had been so desperate.

May you like

Because the person holding control…

Was the last person anyone expected.
