Chapter 7: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
The bank's email contained six attachments.
I opened the first one.
Then the second.
By the time I reached the third, my hands had gone cold.
My father hadn't simply applied for a $500,000 business loan.
He had submitted documents claiming that I personally guaranteed repayment using assets held by my investment company.
There was even a scanned signature.
My signature.
Except it wasn't mine.
Michael stood beside the dining table, reading over my shoulder.
"Don't respond to the bank yet," he said.
"We need to preserve everything and have the bank's fraud department handle this.""
I looked at him.
"How long has this been going on?""
"We don't know.""
"My father has access to the company records.""
"Operational access. Not unrestricted authority over your personal holdings.""
I scrolled further.
The loan application listed the intended use of funds as business expansion and operational liquidity.
But another document contained a different description.
*Repayment of outstanding shareholder advances and related-party obligations.*
I pointed at the screen.
"What does that mean?""
Michael pulled out a chair.
"It means someone may have been trying to use the loan to repay money that was previously transferred out of the company.""
"Money Vanessa received?""
"Possibly. We need the complete transaction history.""
I stared at the screen.
For ten years, I had protected my father from the consequences of his financial decisions.
I had paid his creditors.
I had covered his mistakes.
I had allowed him to tell everyone that he was the man who had saved the family.
Now he was apparently preparing to put my name on a debt I had never agreed to.
"Call the bank," I said.
Michael nodded.
"I'll arrange a formal fraud investigation.""
"And the company?""
"We should notify the board and suspend any authority your father has to initiate new borrowing, subject to the governing documents.""
"Do it.""
Michael gathered his papers.
Before leaving, he looked at me carefully.
"Daniel, I need you to understand something. Once we notify the bank and begin the investigation, this may become public within the business community.""
"I don't care.""
"It could affect your father's reputation.""
I looked toward the bedroom where Clara was resting.
"My father was worried about his reputation while my pregnant wife was sitting in a hospital bed.""
Michael nodded.
"I understand.""
After he left, I called Vanessa.
She answered immediately.
"Did you tell Dad?""
"No.""
"Thank God.""
"Send me the documents you mentioned.""
"I'll look for them.""
"Vanessa, I need everything. Every email, every invoice, every form you signed.""
She hesitated.
"Daniel, Dad said you were the one who approved the transfers.""
"Did you ever see me approve anything?""
"No.""
"Then why did you sign?""
Her voice became defensive.
"Because he's our father! He told me it was legitimate.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"You've been receiving money from a company you never worked for.""
"I didn't know it was stolen!""
"I didn't say it was stolen. I said we need to find out what happened.""
She began crying.
"You're going to destroy him.""
I closed my eyes.
"He did this himself.""
At 11:32 a.m., Vanessa finally sent the first batch of documents.
There were invoices for consulting services, account statements, and several emails.
Most of the invoices described vague responsibilities.
Strategic planning.
Market development.
Brand consulting.
Corporate relationship management.
One invoice claimed Vanessa had provided six months of business consulting.
It was dated during the period when she had been posting photographs from luxury hotels in California and Florida.
I forwarded everything to Michael.
Then I noticed something.
A document dated four months earlier contained my father's signature and Vanessa's.
It was titled:
*Beneficial Ownership and Authorized Disbursement Agreement.*
I opened it.
My name appeared in the second paragraph.
According to the document, I had supposedly authorized Vanessa to receive funds on behalf of my investment company.
I read the paragraph twice.
Then I called Michael.
"Did you see this?""
"Yes.""
"That's not my agreement.""
"I know. There is no corresponding authorization in your corporate records.""
"Can they use this to claim I approved everything?""
"Not legitimately if it was fabricated. But we need the originals and the full submission history.""
I looked at the signature page.
Someone had copied my name from another document.
The handwriting was close.
The signature wasn't.
Then my phone rang.
Dad.
I answered.
"Daniel.""
His voice sounded strangely calm.
"We need to talk.""
"About the forged guarantee?""
Silence.
Then he laughed.
"That's what Michael is telling you?""
"I've seen the application.""
"You're misunderstanding a routine business document.""
"My signature is on it.""
"Because you're the financial backer.""
"I never signed it.""
He sighed.
"Son, these things happen in business. Your signature was included because you were already committed to supporting the company.""
"Who included it?""
"Don't be difficult.""
I stood up.
"Did you forge my signature?""
His voice hardened.
"Watch your accusations.""
"Answer the question.""
"You're letting your attorney fill your head with nonsense.""
I could hear my mother speaking in the background.
Then Vanessa's voice.
My father lowered his voice.
"Listen to me. The company needs liquidity. If this application falls through, we could have serious problems.""
"Then you should have asked me.""
"You would have refused.""
"Correct.""
He went quiet.
Then he said:
"You owe me, Daniel.""
I stared at the wall.
"There it is again.""
"What?""
"The debt you invented because you raised me.""
"Don't be disrespectful.""
"You used my money to keep your company alive. You used my credit to maintain your lifestyle. And now you have apparently used my signature to borrow half a million dollars.""
"Everything I did was for this family!""
I almost whispered my next words.
"Then why did you let Vanessa hurt my wife?""
He didn't answer.
Instead, he said:
"Your mother wants you to release the vacation funds. We'll discuss the business matter after we return.""
I laughed.
"You still think you're going to Europe?""
"Don't be childish.""
I ended the call.
At 12:04 p.m., Michael sent me a message.
*Michael:* The bank has confirmed receipt of the disputed application. They are preserving the submission records and reviewing the alleged guarantee.
A second message arrived.
*Michael:* We also found a reference to another account that does not appear on the company's regular financial statements.
I called him immediately.
"What account?""
"An account held by a separate entity.""
"Who owns it?""
"Your father and Vanessa are both listed in the associated documentation.""
I sat down slowly.
"How much money?""
"We haven't confirmed the balance.""
"Find out.""
"We're working on it.""
I looked at the clock.
It was barely afternoon.
The vacation was supposed to begin tomorrow.
But the more I uncovered, the more I realized that canceling a luxury trip was the smallest part of what needed to happen.
Then Clara appeared in the doorway.
She was holding the doorframe for support.
"Daniel?""
I immediately stood.
"What are you doing out of bed?""
"I wanted some water.""
I guided her to the sofa.
She studied my expression.
"What's happened?""
I hesitated.
Then I told her about the forged signature.
She listened quietly.
When I finished, she looked at me.
"Daniel, what if they try to blame you for everything?""
I took her hand.
"Then we'll show them the truth.""
She leaned her head against my shoulder.
"Promise me you'll stay with me through this.""
I kissed her forehead.
"Nothing is more important than you and our baby.""
My phone vibrated again.
A new message from Vanessa.
It contained a photograph of a document.
Her voice message followed.
"Daniel, I found this in Dad's office. I think you need to see it.""
I opened the photograph.
It was a printed bank statement.
And the account balance was $487,600.
May you like
But the name on the account wasn't my father's.
It belonged to a company registered under my name.
