Chapter 11: My Father's Last Threat

At 7:30 the following morning, my father held an emergency meeting at his office.

I wasn't invited.

Neither was Michael.

But Vanessa sent me a photograph of the meeting notice.

It had been distributed to senior employees and several business associates.

The subject was:

*Emergency Financial Governance Meeting — Unauthorized Actions by Daniel Hayes.*

My father was apparently claiming that I had attempted to seize control of the company and interfere with legitimate business transactions.

He had also accused me of withdrawing funds that belonged to the family.

I read the notice while standing in our kitchen.

Clara was sitting at the table, eating breakfast.

"What's happened?"" she asked.

I showed her the photograph.

She read it slowly.

Then she looked up.

"He's blaming you?""

"Yes.""

"For the things he did?""

"Apparently.""

Clara placed her fork down.

"Are you going to attend?""

I shook my head.

"Not without legal advice.""

She nodded.

"Good.""

I kissed her forehead.

Then Michael called.

"Daniel, your father has sent a letter to the board.""

"What does it say?""

"He claims your actions have placed the company at risk.""

"Has anyone responded?""

"Three directors have requested supporting evidence. One has asked for an independent review.""

I almost smiled.

"At least someone is asking questions.""

"There's another issue. Your father has instructed the finance department to release a payment of $85,000 to Mediterranean Holdings.""

I straightened.

"What?""

"The payment is marked as a settlement of outstanding management expenses.""

"Can he authorize that?""

"Not under the restrictions currently in place. The bank has been notified that the transaction is disputed.""

I sat down.

"Good.""

Michael paused.

"Daniel, your father is becoming increasingly desperate.""

"I know.""

"Don't contact him directly.""

I agreed.

But my father contacted me anyway.

At 9:12 a.m., he appeared on my doorstep.

Alone.

I checked the camera before opening the door.

He looked exhausted.

His shirt was wrinkled, and his hair was uncombed.

For the first time in years, he didn't look like the wealthy businessman he pretended to be.

He looked like a man who had lost control.

I opened the door but kept my distance.

"What do you want?""

He stepped forward.

"We need to settle this.""

"There's nothing to settle.""

"Daniel, please.""

I almost didn't recognize his tone.

My father had never said please to me when money was involved.

I let him enter.

Clara was resting upstairs.

He glanced toward the staircase.

"Is she here?""

"She's resting. Don't disturb her.""

He nodded.

Then he sat on the sofa.

"I understand you're upset.""

I remained standing.

"That's a generous description.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Your sister made a terrible mistake at dinner.""

"She deliberately poured ice water over a seven-month pregnant woman.""

"She didn't know Clara would react that way.""

"She knew exactly what she was doing.""

My father looked away.

"Fine. I shouldn't have allowed it.""

I stared at him.

"Allowed it?""

He raised his hands.

"Daniel, I'm trying to apologize.""

"You're trying to save your money.""

He looked offended.

"That's unfair.""

"Then tell me about the French property.""

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

"What property?""

I took out my phone and showed him the photograph.

He stared at it.

Then he leaned back.

"That was a legitimate investment.""

"Purchased with company money?""

"Funds were moved through several entities for tax efficiency.""

"Did I authorize it?""

"You were the financial backer.""

"That's not an answer.""

He stood.

"You're making this unnecessarily complicated.""

I stepped closer.

"Did you forge my signature?""

His face hardened.

"Be careful.""

"Did you?""

He pointed at me.

"You have no idea how much I sacrificed to build this family.""

I laughed.

"You sacrificed nothing. I paid the bills.""

"Because you could afford it!""

"That doesn't give you permission to use my name.""

He walked toward the window.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he turned around.

"Listen. The company was struggling. I made decisions to protect everyone.""

"By moving money into private accounts?""

"By managing risk.""

"By creating fake consulting invoices for Vanessa?""

"She was helping the business.""

"Doing what?""

He looked irritated.

"She handled relationships.""

"With whom?""

He didn't answer.

I took another document from the folder Michael had prepared.

It was the bank application.

"Did you sign this?""

He glanced at it.

"Yes.""

"Did you submit it with my signature?""

"I submitted it on behalf of the company.""

"Did I authorize it?""

He stared at me.

Then he said:

"You were going to benefit from the loan.""

I shook my head.

"That's not how authorization works.""

His voice rose.

"Everything I did was for you!""

I looked at him.

"Then why did you tell the accountant to keep me out of it?""

He froze.

For the first time, he seemed unable to produce an immediate answer.

I stepped closer.

"Why did you write that?""

He looked down.

Then he said something that made the room feel smaller.

"Because I knew you would interfere.""

I nodded slowly.

"So you knew I wouldn't approve.""

"Daniel—"

"You knew I wouldn't approve, so you used my signature.""

He rubbed his face.

"You're taking this out of context.""

I opened the front door.

"No. I'm finally putting it in context.""

He didn't move.

Then he turned toward me.

"If you continue with this investigation, you'll destroy your mother's life.""

I stared at him.

"Don't use Mom to threaten me.""

"She signed documents. She knew about the property.""

"Did you tell her the truth?""

He said nothing.

I pointed toward the door.

"Leave.""

He stood there for another moment.

Then he said:

"You're making a mistake.""

I looked directly at him.

"The mistake was trusting you with my life.""

He walked out.

I locked the door.

My phone rang almost immediately.

Michael.

"Did your father visit?""

"Yes.""

"What happened?""

"He admitted he submitted the bank application.""

Michael went quiet.

"Did he admit using your signature?""

"He said I was going to benefit from the loan.""

"That's important. Did you record the conversation?""

"No.""

"All right. Don't worry. We'll work with the available evidence.""

I told him about the threat involving my mother.

Michael sighed.

"Your father is trying to pressure you into withdrawing the investigation.""

"He's not going to succeed.""

At 11:48 a.m., the bank sent another notification.

The disputed loan application had been formally rejected pending investigation.

The account associated with Mediterranean Holdings remained under review.

Then, at 12:06 p.m., I received an email from an address I didn't recognize.

The subject line read:

*You Need to Know What Richard Did Before the Villa Was Purchased.*

I opened it.

There was no greeting.

Just a short message.

*Mr. Hayes,*

*I was the accountant who prepared the original records for your father's company. I left eighteen months ago because I refused to sign off on certain transactions.*

*Your father told everyone the French property was purchased as an investment. That is not what happened.*

*The original funds came from a company account associated with your wife's name.*

I stopped reading.

My wife's name?

I opened the attachment.

It contained a bank transfer record.

The source account was associated with an investment arrangement I had created years earlier.

An arrangement established before Clara and I were married.

But the beneficiary details had been changed.

The new beneficiary was a company registered under Clara's maiden name.

I stared at the document.

Then another email arrived.

*There is one more thing you should know. Your father didn't choose the French property randomly. He specifically requested it because he believed the ownership records would make it difficult for you to trace the money.*

I looked toward the stairs.

Clara was upstairs.

My father had not only used my company.

May you like

He had somehow involved my wife's name.

And I had no idea how much she knew.
