Chapter 6: The Secret Account
I read the email three times.
It was dated eleven days before the $42,000 transfer to Vanessa.
My father's message was brief.
He had instructed the accountant to record the payment as consulting compensation, even though there was no signed employment agreement or evidence of work performed.
At the bottom, he had added one sentence.
*Daniel doesn't need to know. He has enough money, and this keeps Vanessa happy.*
I felt sick.
Not because of the amount.
Because of the casualness.
My father had taken money from a company I had spent ten years keeping alive and handed it to my sister without even pretending there was a legitimate reason.
I called Michael.
"How many transfers like this?""
"We're still investigating.""
"Give me a number.""
"At least six questionable payments over the last eighteen months.""
I sat down.
"How much?""
"Approximately $186,000 so far. We haven't finished tracing the transactions.""
I closed my eyes.
"Where did the money go?""
"Some went into Vanessa's personal accounts. Some paid for purchases. We're still following the rest.""
I stared at the email.
"Was this all approved by my father?""
"His signature appears on the authorizations.""
"Then freeze his authority to make further discretionary payments.""
"We need to follow the company's governance documents.""
"Do whatever the documents permit.""
"Understood.""
I hung up.
For several minutes, I sat alone.
Then I heard Clara calling from the bedroom.
"Daniel?""
I immediately went to her.
She was sitting up against the pillows.
"Are you okay?""
"Yes. I just woke up. You've been in the kitchen a long time.""
I sat beside her.
"Something came up with the company.""
"Your father's company?""
"Our company.""
She looked at me.
"What happened?""
I explained the transfers.
The fake consulting payments.
The missing documentation.
The email.
Clara listened without interrupting.
When I finished, she looked down at her hands.
"Daniel, I know this is difficult.""
I nodded.
"But I need you to promise me something.""
"What?""
"Don't let them make you feel guilty for protecting what you've worked for.""
I reached for her hand.
"I promise.""
She hesitated.
"Do you think your father knew what Vanessa was doing with the money?""
"I don't know.""
"And your mother?""
"I don't know that either.""
Clara looked toward the window.
"Sometimes I think they all knew. They just didn't want to ask questions because everything was comfortable.""
I couldn't disagree.
At 10:15 a.m., Michael arrived at our house with a folder.
He waited until Clara was comfortable before sitting across from me at the dining table.
"First, how is she?""
"Resting. The doctors want her to avoid stress.""
"Then I'll keep this brief.""
He opened the folder.
"We've identified several issues.""
He laid out four documents.
The first was a list of payments made to Vanessa.
The second showed unexplained transfers to an account associated with my father's company.
The third contained the accountant's correspondence.
The fourth was a copy of a bank authorization.
I picked it up.
"What is this?""
Michael adjusted his glasses.
"Your father attempted to obtain a new line of credit against the company's assets.""
I looked at the date.
Three weeks earlier.
"How much?""
"Five hundred thousand dollars.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
"According to the application, the money was intended for working capital.""
"Was it approved?""
"No. The bank requested additional documentation.""
I turned the page.
There was a section identifying the company's financial guarantor.
My name.
My personal holding company.
My signature was attached.
Except I hadn't signed it.
"Michael.""
He leaned forward.
"What?""
"That's not my signature.""
He examined the page.
Then he went very still.
"You're certain?""
"Absolutely.""
He took a photograph of the document.
"We need to verify how this was submitted.""
"Was my father involved?""
"His name appears as the submitting officer.""
I looked at the page again.
For ten years, I had protected my father from embarrassment.
Now it appeared he had tried to use my identity to borrow money.
"Can he do that?""
"Not lawfully without proper authorization.""
I leaned back.
"What happens now?""
"We preserve every record, notify the relevant financial institution through the appropriate channels, and have independent counsel review the suspected signature issue.""
I nodded.
"Do it.""
Michael closed the folder.
"There's something else.""
I was beginning to hate those words.
"What?""
"Vanessa called the accountant this morning.""
"What did she want?""
"She asked whether the company could issue her a final consulting payment before the vacation.""
I stared at him.
"After everything?""
"Yes.""
"How much?""
"Twenty-five thousand dollars.""
I let out a slow breath.
"She's still asking for money?""
"Apparently.""
I looked toward the hallway.
Clara was resting.
Our child was still inside her.
And my sister was trying to collect another paycheck for a job that might never have existed.
"Michael, I want a full independent audit.""
"Already arranging it.""
"And I want every questionable payment traced.""
"That will take time.""
"Take the time.""
Michael nodded.
Then he hesitated.
"Daniel, there's a possibility your father has been using the company to support a lifestyle that exceeds what you understood.""
I laughed quietly.
"That's been obvious for years.""
"No. I mean something more serious.""
He opened his laptop.
"Look at this.""
He turned the screen toward me.
It showed a series of transfers between three accounts.
The first belonged to the operating company.
The second belonged to a consulting firm.
The third was a private account registered under a different business name.
I recognized the consulting firm.
It had been established by my father two years earlier.
"What's the connection?""
Michael pointed at the last account.
"The registered beneficiary is Vanessa.""
I stared at the screen.
"How much?""
"About $310,000 has moved through these accounts over two years. We don't yet know how much was legitimate.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Does Vanessa know?""
"She appears to have signed some of the account documents.""
That meant she wasn't simply receiving money.
She might have known exactly where it was coming from.
My phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
"What?""
Her voice was unusually sweet.
"Daniel, can we talk?""
"We're talking.""
"Not like this. I mean privately.""
"About what?""
She sighed.
"Look, I know last night got out of control.""
I said nothing.
"I was stressed. Everyone was stressed. I shouldn't have poured the water.""
It was the closest thing to an apology I had ever heard from her.
But something about her tone felt rehearsed.
"What do you want, Vanessa?""
She hesitated.
"I need you to release the vacation payment.""
"No.""
"Daniel, please. Just listen.""
"I'm listening.""
"Mom and Dad have already told everyone we're going. If we don't leave tomorrow, they'll be humiliated.""
"That's not my problem.""
She lowered her voice.
"There's something else.""
I looked at Michael.
"What?""
"Some of the money Dad transferred to me wasn't actually for me.""
I sat straighter.
"What does that mean?""
"He told me to keep it in my account. He said it was for business purposes.""
"What business purposes?""
"I don't know. He just said not to touch it.""
I glanced at the account documents.
"How much?""
She hesitated.
"Daniel, I don't want to get involved in this.""
"How much, Vanessa?""
"Three hundred thousand.""
My stomach tightened.
"Three hundred thousand dollars?""
"Approximately.""
"Where is it?""
"I don't know. Dad told me he moved most of it.""
I stood up.
"Why are you telling me this now?""
Her voice cracked.
"Because he said if anyone asks, I should tell them it was your money.""
I froze.
"What?""
"He said it was part of your investment. That you approved it.""
I looked at Michael.
He had stopped typing.
"Vanessa, listen carefully. Did you sign any documents?""
Silence.
Then she whispered:
"Yes.""
"What did you sign?""
"I don't know. Dad said they were tax documents.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Where are the copies?""
"I have some.""
"Send them to Michael.""
"Daniel, please don't tell Dad I called.""
I stared at the bank documents on the table.
My father had been hiding transfers.
Vanessa had been signing paperwork.
And someone had apparently been preparing to blame me.
I lowered my voice.
"Vanessa, did Dad tell you why he needed your signature?""
She started crying.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
"He told me that if the company ever got audited, you would be the one taking the fall.""
The line went silent.
I looked at Michael.
He slowly closed his laptop.
Then he said:
"Daniel, I think we need to stop treating this as a family financial dispute.""
I swallowed.
"What do you mean?""
He pointed at the forged bank authorization.
"We may be looking at something much bigger than your father's attempt to finance a luxury lifestyle.""
And before I could respond, my phone vibrated again.
An email had arrived from the bank.
