Calm

Chapter 2: The Glass of Ice Water

The first sign of trouble was the sound of Vanessa's chair scraping against the floor.

She stood up and reached for the silver ice bucket sitting beside the drinks cart.

"Is anyone else hot in here?"" she asked.

My mother looked toward the thermostat.

"Would you like me to turn down the air-conditioning?""

"No, Mom. I'm fine.""

Vanessa picked up the glass pitcher beside the bucket.

It contained ice water.

Clara was quietly eating a small piece of bread.

I noticed Vanessa looking at her.

Something about that expression made my stomach tighten.

"Vanessa, what are you doing?"" I asked.

She ignored me.

She walked around the table, stopping directly behind Clara's chair.

"Hey, Clara.""

Clara looked up.

"Yes?""

"Can I ask you something?""

"Of course.""

Vanessa tilted her head.

"Do you ever get tired of making everyone accommodate you?""

Clara blinked.

"I'm sorry?""

"Your special chair. Your special food. Your special schedule. Everyone has to stop whatever they're doing because you're pregnant.""

My mother sighed.

"Vanessa, sit down.""

But my sister continued.

"Some of us actually have lives, Clara.""

I pushed my chair back.

"That's enough. Come sit down.""

Vanessa turned toward me.

"Why are you always defending her?""

"Because you're being cruel.""

She laughed.

"You're unbelievable.""

Clara tried to calm the situation.

"Vanessa, I don't want to argue. I'm only here because I wanted to wish everyone a safe trip.""

"Then you should have stayed home.""

The words hung in the air.

My father suddenly became very interested in cutting his lamb.

I stared at him.

"Are you going to say something?""

He didn't look up.

"Daniel, let's not ruin the evening.""

I turned back to Vanessa.

"Put the pitcher down.""

She glanced at the water.

Then she looked directly at Clara.

"Maybe you need to cool off.""

Before I could understand what she meant, Vanessa lifted the pitcher.

And poured.

A full pitcher of ice water came crashing over my wife's head.

The water soaked Clara's hair, her blouse, and the front of her dress.

Ice cubes bounced across the table and scattered onto the floor.

One landed in her lap.

Another struck the edge of her plate.

For a second, nobody moved.

Clara gasped.

Her hands immediately went to her belly.

I heard her chair scrape backward.

Then she whispered something I will never forget.

"My baby...""

I was on my feet before the last ice cube stopped rolling.

"WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?""

Vanessa dropped the empty pitcher onto the table.

Water spread across the white tablecloth.

She actually laughed.

"Oh my God. It was just water.""

I pulled off my jacket and wrapped it around Clara's shoulders.

Her entire body was shaking.

"Daniel...""

"I'm here, sweetheart.""

"Something feels wrong.""

Those four words erased every other thought in my head.

I crouched beside her.

"Where does it hurt?""

"My stomach. I don't know. I just...""

She struggled to breathe.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Call an ambulance.""

My sister rolled her eyes.

"Don't be dramatic.""

"CALL AN AMBULANCE!""

My mother finally stood.

"Daniel, calm down. She's probably just startled.""

I turned toward her.

"She's seven months pregnant, and your daughter just dumped a pitcher of ice water over her.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"She was being annoying.""

I stared at her.

For a moment, I genuinely couldn't believe those words had come out of her mouth.

My father finally rose from his chair.

"Daniel, take Clara into the bathroom. Get her cleaned up before you make a scene.""

I looked at him.

"A scene?""

He lowered his voice.

"We have guests arriving tomorrow. I don't want the neighbors hearing all this.""

I felt something inside me go completely cold.

My wife was trembling in my arms.

And my father was worried about the neighbors.

Clara suddenly gripped my sleeve.

"Daniel, please. The baby.""

I didn't say another word.

I lifted her carefully.

My father stepped aside.

Vanessa shook her head.

"You're seriously leaving dinner over this?""

I stopped at the doorway.

I looked back at my sister.

"You just assaulted my pregnant wife.""

She scoffed.

"Don't use big words to make me look bad.""

I didn't respond.

I carried Clara to the car.

My hands were shaking so badly that I almost dropped the keys.

Once she was safely in the passenger seat, I turned the heater on low and called emergency services.

The dispatcher asked me several questions.

How many weeks pregnant?

Seven months.

Was she conscious?

Yes.

Was she experiencing pain?

Yes.

Was there bleeding?

Not that I could see.

I followed every instruction while trying to keep Clara calm.

"Look at me, sweetheart.""

She turned her head.

"Is our baby okay?""

I swallowed.

"We're going to get checked. The doctors will take care of you.""

"Don't let anything happen to our baby.""

I took her hand.

"I won't leave you. Not for a second.""

At the hospital, nurses immediately took her for assessment.

They monitored the baby's heartbeat and checked Clara's blood pressure.

I sat outside the examination room with her wet clothes in a plastic bag beside me.

My phone kept vibrating.

Vanessa.

Mom.

Dad.

I ignored every call.

Then a message appeared from my mother.

*Mom:* Daniel, please don't turn this into a family scandal. Vanessa didn't mean anything by it.

I stared at the screen.

Another message arrived.

*Vanessa:* You owe me an apology for screaming at me. I was joking.

I read it twice.

Then I took a screenshot.

A few minutes later, my father called again.

I answered.

"Daniel," he said sharply, "what exactly are you planning to do?""

I looked through the glass at the medical staff surrounding my wife.

"What do you mean?""

"You're making this bigger than it needs to be. Your sister is leaving for Europe tomorrow. We don't need police involved.""

I couldn't believe him.

"Have you asked how Clara is?""

A pause.

"She's at a hospital. Obviously, she's being looked after.""

"She's your daughter-in-law.""

"Don't start with that emotional nonsense.""

I closed my eyes.

Then he said something that changed the way I saw him forever.

"Remember, Daniel, your family comes first. Don't let a temporary problem destroy everything we've built.""

Everything we've built.

I looked at the hospital bill already appearing on my phone.

Then I thought about the house mortgage.

The car payments.

The company expenses.

The vacation deposits.

The $150,000 Mediterranean trip.

And suddenly, I understood something.

My family hadn't built any of it.

I had.

When the doctor finally came out, I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.

"How is my wife?""

The doctor gave me a serious but reassuring look.

"Her initial assessment is encouraging. The baby's heartbeat is present, and we're continuing to monitor both of them. Given her blood-pressure history and the circumstances, we want to keep her under observation.""

My knees nearly gave way.

"Can I see her?""

"Of course. She's asking for you.""

I entered the room.

Clara was lying beneath a white hospital blanket, an electronic monitor strapped around her belly.

The rhythmic sound of our baby's heartbeat filled the room.

I took her hand and kissed her forehead.

"I'm sorry.""

She frowned.

"Why are you apologizing?""

"Because I brought you there.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Daniel, you didn't pour the water.""

I lowered my head.

Then she whispered:

"Please don't let them near our baby.""

I squeezed her hand.

"They won't.""

And for the first time in ten years, I knew exactly what I needed to do.

But before I could make a single phone call, my sister sent a photograph to the family group chat.

It was a picture of her standing beside the private yacht.

Her caption read:

*Three weeks of luxury. Some people should learn not to ruin other people's happiness.*

I looked at the photograph.

May you like

Then at the hospital monitor.

And I made my decision.
