Chapter 14: The Last Person My Father Expected
Michael didn't let me drive to my parents' house alone.
He insisted that we contact the appropriate professionals and preserve the documents before confronting anyone.
By 8:00 p.m., the independent accountant had prepared a preliminary transaction schedule.
The missing inheritance funds were not simply lost.
A significant portion had moved through several related companies.
Some went toward my father's operating business.
Some paid personal expenses.
Some went into the French property.
And approximately $310,000 had been routed through accounts associated with Vanessa.
The remaining transactions were still being investigated.
Michael placed the report in front of me.
"Your father has created a complicated structure.""
I looked at the chart.
"Why?""
"Possibly to make the source of the money difficult to identify.""
"And the French villa?""
"Your company appears in the ownership chain, but the original purchase funding is disputed.""
"Can he sell it?""
"Not without the relevant ownership and authorization issues being resolved. We've requested urgent legal review in France.""
I nodded.
"What's happening with his flight?""
Michael checked his phone.
"His travel agent confirmed a reservation for tomorrow morning.""
"Can we stop him?""
"We cannot simply prevent him from traveling because of a financial dispute. But the relevant authorities can be notified if there is evidence of suspected financial misconduct, and the bank has already been asked to preserve the records.""
I understood.
This wasn't about revenge.
It was about making sure he couldn't move assets or destroy evidence.
At 8:47 p.m., Vanessa called.
"Daniel, Dad just came back.""
"Where are you?""
"At the house.""
"Stay away from him if he's angry.""
"He's asking about the documents.""
"Don't give him anything.""
She lowered her voice.
"Daniel, he said he'll blame me for everything.""
I closed my eyes.
"Vanessa, you need to tell the truth. That's the only way forward.""
"But he'll say I stole the money.""
"Did you?""
She was silent.
Then she whispered:
"I spent some of it.""
I looked at Michael.
"How much?""
"Maybe sixty thousand.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"On what?""
"Clothes. Travel. The car. Some things for the apartment.""
I swallowed.
"Vanessa, you need to disclose that.""
"I know.""
"And the rest?""
"Dad told me he moved it into another account.""
"Whose account?""
She hesitated.
"His.""
I nodded slowly.
"Send Michael everything you have.""
She began crying.
"Daniel, I'm sorry about Clara.""
I looked toward the bedroom.
"Why did you do it?""
"I was angry.""
"At Clara?""
"At you.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because everything changed after you married her. You stopped giving me whatever I wanted immediately. You started saying no.""
I stared at the wall.
"Vanessa, I was paying your rent, your car, your bills, and your holidays. What exactly did you think I owed you?""
She cried harder.
"I thought you wanted to help.""
"I did want to help. But you never once asked whether I could afford it or whether Clara and I needed anything.""
She didn't answer.
Then I said:
"You didn't just humiliate my wife. You made her feel unsafe in a room where she should have been welcomed.""
"I know.""
"I don't know if I can forgive you.""
"I understand.""
For the first time, I believed she understood.
At 9:30 p.m., Michael received a call from the French lawyer.
He listened, asked several questions, and then turned toward me.
"They've located the original purchase agreement.""
"What's different?""
"The property was initially purchased through Mediterranean Holdings. Your father then attempted to transfer it into your company using the one-euro agreement.""
"Was the transfer completed?""
"Not entirely. There are irregularities in the registration documents.""
I exhaled.
"So the property isn't legally settled?""
"Correct. The ownership position is disputed.""
"Can we protect it?""
"The French lawyer is preparing the necessary steps to prevent any further unauthorized transfer while the matter is reviewed.""
I nodded.
Then Michael opened another email.
"There is something else.""
I was beginning to dread that sentence.
"What?""
"The woman in the photograph has been identified.""
He turned the laptop toward me.
Her name was Elaine Porter.
I recognized it.
She had been my father's former financial adviser.
She was also the person who had helped him establish several of the companies involved in the restructuring ten years earlier.
"Is she still working with him?""
"Apparently. The French lawyer has found correspondence between Elaine and Mediterranean Holdings.""
"What does it say?""
Michael opened the email chain.
The messages discussed the purchase of the villa and the movement of funds.
Then I saw one dated six months earlier.
Elaine had written:
*Richard, the arrangement cannot remain in this form indefinitely. Daniel will eventually discover that the original capital came from his grandmother's estate.*
My father replied:
*He won't discover anything if we complete the restructuring before the next audit.*
I stared at the screen.
Another message followed.
*And Clara?*
My father had answered:
*Her name is useful. If Daniel challenges the arrangement, the paperwork will show that the transfer was made at her request.*
I felt my stomach turn.
Michael closed the email.
"Elaine may be an important witness.""
"Can we contact her?""
"We can have the appropriate lawyers make contact.""
I nodded.
At 10:12 p.m., my mother called.
"Daniel, please come over.""
"Is Dad there?""
"Yes.""
"Mom, I don't think that's a good idea.""
"He wants to talk to you.""
"About what?""
She hesitated.
"He's willing to give you the villa.""
I laughed.
"Give me?""
"He says he'll sign whatever you need.""
I looked at Michael.
"Why now?""
My mother whispered:
"Because he says he wants the family to stay together.""
I felt nothing.
For ten years, my father had been happy to let me finance his life.
Now that his financial arrangements were being investigated, he wanted reconciliation.
"Mom, tell him the lawyers can communicate with him.""
"Daniel, please. He's your father.""
I closed my eyes.
"Mom, I have a question.""
"What?""
"Did Grandma ever tell you why she left me the inheritance?""
She began crying.
"Yes.""
"What did she say?""
"She said she wanted you to be independent.""
I nodded slowly.
"Then I think I should finally listen to her.""
I ended the call.
At 11:05 p.m., Michael received a notification from the bank.
The attempted transfer from the private account had been blocked pending verification.
The disputed $500,000 loan application remained under investigation.
And the independent audit had identified additional transactions requiring review.
My father was running out of places to hide.
But at 11:42 p.m., a message arrived from an unknown number.
*Daniel, this is Elaine Porter. Your father doesn't know I'm contacting you.*
A second message followed.
*I have the original documents from your grandmother's estate. I also have proof of what Richard intended to do with the French property.*
I stared at the screen.
Then the final message appeared.
*But before I send anything, you need to understand something. Your grandmother didn't leave you $1.8 million by accident. She knew exactly what your father had been doing.*
I immediately called her.
She answered on the second ring.
"Mr. Hayes?""
"Yes. Who are you?""
"Elaine Porter. I worked with your father for years.""
"Why are you contacting me?""
She was silent for a moment.
Then she said:
"Because I was there when your grandmother discovered the first unauthorized transfer.""
My heart began pounding.
"What?""
"She confronted your father. She demanded the money be returned.""
"Did he?""
"No.""
"What happened?""
Elaine lowered her voice.
"Your grandmother changed her will after that confrontation. She added a separate instruction that nobody in your family was supposed to see until you reached a certain age.""
I gripped the phone.
"What instruction?""
Elaine answered slowly.
"She named an independent trustee and left a sealed letter. That letter explains why she never wanted your father to control your inheritance.""
I looked at Michael.
He was already taking notes.
"Where is the letter?""
"In my possession.""
"Can I have it?""
"Yes. But there is something else you need to know.""
"What?""
Elaine took a breath.
"Your father wasn't the only person who knew about the inheritance.""
I froze.
"Who else?""
May you like
She answered with one name.
"Your mother.""
