Chapter 4: The Phone Call That Changed Everything

"Daniel, you have exactly five minutes to fix this.""

My father's voice thundered through the phone.

It was 5:43 a.m., and I was sitting in a plastic chair outside my pregnant wife's hospital room.

Behind the glass, Clara was sleeping.

A nurse had just checked her blood pressure and adjusted the fetal monitor. The steady heartbeat coming from the machine was the only sound that mattered to me.

But my father was shouting as if his vacation were a matter of life and death.

"Do you understand what you've done?"" Richard demanded.

"Yes.""

"The travel company says the yacht reservation has been suspended. The hotels are refusing to confirm our rooms. They say the payment authorization has been withdrawn!""

"That's correct.""

"Put it back!""

I rubbed my eyes.

"No.""

There was a long silence.

Then my father lowered his voice.

"Daniel, listen carefully. I don't know what nonsense Vanessa told you, but this is getting out of hand.""

"Vanessa poured ice water over Clara.""

"She was joking!""

"Clara was shaking when I carried her out of your house.""

"She got wet. That's all.""

I stood up.

"She's seven months pregnant, Dad. She has blood-pressure complications. She's in a hospital bed right now.""

My father sighed impatiently.

"Doctors are always overly cautious. You know how hospitals are. They make everything sound serious.""

I looked through the glass.

Clara's hand was resting over her belly.

"Did you ask about the baby?""

He didn't answer.

"Did you?""

"Your mother is very upset. That's what you should be concerned about.""

I almost laughed.

"My mother?""

"Yes. She's been planning this trip for months. Vanessa has spent thousands preparing for it. You can't just destroy everyone's plans because of one stupid argument.""

"Then pay for it yourself.""

Another silence.

This one lasted longer.

"Excuse me?""

"You heard me. If the vacation is so important, pay for it.""

"Don't be ridiculous.""

"Why?""

"Because that's not how our family operates.""

I stared at the floor.

For ten years, I had heard variations of that sentence.

Family doesn't abandon family.

Family makes sacrifices.

Family comes first.

But somehow, those rules only applied when I was the one making sacrifices.

My father continued.

"You have a responsibility to us.""

"No, Dad. I had a choice. And I made the mistake of giving you money for ten years.""

His voice sharpened.

"Watch your mouth.""

"Or what?""

"You wouldn't have the life you have today without me.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The old manipulation.

The same speech he had delivered whenever I questioned his decisions.

He wanted me to remember that he was my father.

He wanted me to forget that I had rescued his company.

"Daniel, your mother and I raised you. We paid for your education. We gave you everything.""

I remembered the financial records.

My student loans.

The payments I had made on my own.

The emergency transfer that had saved his business.

The mortgage I had covered for years.

"Send me an invoice," I said.

"What?""

"Everything you think I owe you. Send me an invoice. I'll have my accountant review it.""

He inhaled sharply.

"You're being disrespectful.""

"No. I'm finally being honest.""

Then I ended the call.

My hands were shaking.

Not because I regretted what I had done.

Because I had spent so many years being afraid of disappointing a man who had never been afraid of disappointing me.

A nurse approached.

"Mr. Hayes?""

I turned immediately.

"Is something wrong?""

"Your wife is awake. She's asking for you.""

I walked into the room.

Clara looked pale, but her eyes softened when she saw me.

"Was that your father?""

"Yes.""

"What did he want?""

"The vacation.""

She looked away.

"Daniel, I don't want you fighting with your family because of me.""

I sat beside her.

"I'm not fighting because of you.""

"Then why?""

I took her hand.

"Because I finally realized they don't see you as a member of this family. They see you as someone who gets in the way of what they want.""

Clara was quiet.

Then she whispered, "I don't want our baby growing up thinking love means letting people hurt us.""

I kissed her fingers.

"Neither do I.""

At 6:18 a.m., Michael called again.

"Your father has contacted the company's finance department.""

"What did he say?""

"He claims the travel arrangements were approved by him and that you have no authority to cancel them.""

I frowned.

"Did he provide documentation?""

"No. He simply demanded that the company reinstate the authorization.""

"Tell him he can submit whatever documents he wants.""

"Already done.""

Michael paused.

"There's another issue. Your father has also threatened to contact your business partners and tell them you're withdrawing money from the family company for personal reasons.""

I laughed without humor.

"He's going to tell people that I'm stealing from my own company?""

"Something like that.""

"Let him.""

Michael lowered his voice.

"Daniel, I reviewed the corporate records overnight. Your father has been signing documents that describe him as the sole financial owner of the company.""

"He's the operating president.""

"Yes. But not the sole owner.""

"I know.""

"Some of those documents were distributed to banks and suppliers. I recommend a full audit.""

I looked at Clara.

"Do it.""

"Are you certain?""

"Completely.""

At 7:05 a.m., my phone began vibrating again.

This time, it was the family group chat.

My mother had posted a photograph of the travel confirmation.

*Patricia:* Your father and I have worked our entire lives to give this family beautiful memories. I cannot believe one selfish decision is destroying everything.

Vanessa responded immediately.

*Vanessa:* Daniel has always been jealous of me. He can't stand seeing me happy.

Then my father joined.

*Richard:* This family will discuss Daniel's behavior when everyone is together.

I read the messages.

Then I opened the photograph Vanessa had posted the previous night.

Her caption about some people ruining happiness was still visible.

I took another screenshot.

Clara noticed.

"What are you doing?""

"Saving the messages.""

"Why?""

"Because I have a feeling they'll deny everything later.""

She studied my face.

"Don't let them turn you into someone you don't recognize.""

I put the phone down.

"I won't.""

At 8:30 a.m., Michael sent me the first preliminary audit report.

There was a line near the bottom that made me sit upright.

*Unusual related-party transactions requiring immediate investigation.*

I opened the attachment.

My father had been using company funds to cover several personal expenses.

Some were legitimate reimbursements.

Others were not.

And one transaction was particularly interesting.

A payment of $42,000 had been transferred to a private account belonging to Vanessa.

The description read:

*Consulting services — strategic development.*

I stared at it.

Vanessa had never worked for my father's company.

Not once.

I called Michael.

"What's this forty-two-thousand-dollar payment?""

He answered immediately.

"That's what I wanted to discuss.""

"Did she provide any services?""

"There's no supporting documentation in the records we received.""

I looked toward Clara.

She was watching me.

"Michael, find out where that money went.""

"I already started.""

"Good.""

Then I saw the date.

May you like

The transfer had been made eleven days before the Mediterranean vacation's final payment.

And suddenly, I began to suspect that the vacation wasn't the only thing my father had been hiding.
