Chapter 5: The Family Meeting

By noon, my mother had called seventeen times.

I counted.

Seventeen.

I ignored every one.

Clara had been cleared to leave the hospital after further monitoring, with strict instructions to rest and attend a follow-up appointment.

I brought her home, helped her into bed, prepared her medication schedule, and made sure she had everything within reach.

She fell asleep almost immediately.

I was sitting in the kitchen when the doorbell rang.

I checked the security camera.

My father.

My mother.

And Vanessa.

All three stood on my front porch.

Vanessa was wearing oversized sunglasses and carrying a designer handbag.

My mother held a leather folder.

My father looked as if he were arriving to fire an employee.

I opened the door but didn't step aside.

"What are you doing here?""

My father pushed past me.

"We need to talk.""

"Clara is resting.""

"Then we'll talk quietly.""

Vanessa walked into the living room and dropped her handbag onto the sofa.

"Nice place," she said.

"Shame what's happening to the family.""

My mother followed.

"Daniel, this has gone too far.""

I closed the door.

"What exactly has gone too far?""

My father turned toward me.

"The vacation.""

I stared at him.

"Not the hospital?""

He ignored the question.

"Your mother has been crying all morning. Vanessa hasn't slept. We have reservations that took months to arrange.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"And I've already told everyone I'm going.""

I leaned against the doorway.

"Then pay for it.""

My father slapped the leather folder onto the coffee table.

"Stop repeating that ridiculous sentence.""

"Why? Is it difficult?""

His face reddened.

"Because the arrangements were made on the understanding that the family would be supported.""

"By whom?""

He didn't answer.

I continued.

"Who paid the deposits?""

My mother looked uncomfortable.

"Daniel, this isn't about money.""

"Then why did you come here?""

Vanessa scoffed.

"Can you stop pretending you're some kind of victim? You've always had money. You don't understand what it's like to have to plan around a budget.""

I stared at her.

"You're right. I don't understand what it's like to plan around a budget when someone else pays every bill.""

Her mouth opened.

Then closed.

My father stepped forward.

"Don't speak to your sister like that.""

"Why not? You let her pour water over my pregnant wife.""

"She apologized.""

"When?""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"I said it was a joke.""

"That's not an apology.""

"Fine. I'm sorry your wife can't take a joke.""

I looked at my mother.

"Are you hearing this?""

My mother sighed.

"Vanessa, maybe you should say it differently.""

Vanessa threw up her hands.

"Oh, here we go. Everyone has to protect Clara.""

My father pointed at me.

"This is what happens when you marry someone who turns you against your family.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Clara has never asked me to stop helping you.""

"She doesn't need to. We know how she feels.""

"Do you?""

He stepped closer.

"Your wife has changed you.""

I shook my head.

"No, Dad. She helped me see what you were doing.""

My mother sat down.

"Daniel, we have always considered you the responsible one. That's why we trusted you with so much.""

I looked at her.

"Trusted me?""

"Yes.""

"You mean you expected me to pay.""

She pressed her lips together.

My father opened the folder.

Inside were printed documents, several highlighted in yellow.

"Your company has an obligation to support our family's existing commitments.""

I glanced at the papers.

"Who prepared these?""

"That's not important.""

"It is if you're claiming my company owes you money.""

My father pushed the documents toward me.

"Read them.""

I picked up the first page.

It was a summary of what he called family operating expenses.

The mortgage.

The club membership.

The apartment.

The vacation.

Everything.

At the bottom was a line that made me laugh.

*Annual Family Lifestyle Allocation: $684,000.*

I looked up.

"You created a budget for me?""

My father didn't blink.

"These expenses are necessary to maintain our family's position.""

"Our position?""

"Of course.""

"Who decided that?""

He stared at me.

"Your mother and I.""

I put the paper down.

"Then you can maintain it yourselves.""

Vanessa stood up so quickly that her handbag fell off the sofa.

"You can't do this!""

I turned toward her.

"Watch me.""

She pointed at me.

"Do you know how embarrassing this is? I've already told my friends we're leaving tomorrow.""

"That's unfortunate.""

"My friends are expecting pictures!""

"Take pictures somewhere else.""

Her eyes widened.

"You are seriously canceling a hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar vacation because I poured water on Clara?""

I didn't answer immediately.

Then I said, "No. I'm ending a financial arrangement because you poured water on my pregnant wife, and because everyone in this family believes they can hurt her without consequences.""

My mother began crying.

"Daniel, please. We are still your parents.""

I looked at her.

"Then act like it.""

She covered her mouth.

My father slammed his palm onto the coffee table.

"Enough!""

He pointed toward the door.

"If you withdraw financial support, you will lose this family.""

I looked at him for several seconds.

Then I quietly asked:

"Is that a promise?""

He frowned.

"What?""

"Because I've been paying for this family for ten years, and I haven't felt like I belonged to it for a long time.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa reached for her phone.

"I'm calling the travel company myself.""

"Go ahead.""

She walked into the kitchen.

I could hear her speaking loudly.

"Hello? Yes, I'm calling about the Hayes Mediterranean booking. My brother has made some kind of mistake. I need the reservation restored immediately.""

A pause.

"What do you mean you need authorization?""

Another pause.

"MY FATHER IS THE HEAD OF THE FAMILY!""

She listened.

Then her voice dropped.

"Wait. Who paid?""

I watched her through the doorway.

Her expression changed.

"That's impossible.""

She looked at me.

Then back at the phone.

"No. Daniel isn't the owner of everything.""

She ended the call.

When she returned to the living room, her face was pale.

My father stood.

"What did they say?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"They said the payment authorization belongs to Daniel's company.""

My father snatched the phone from her.

"Give me that.""

He called the travel company himself.

I could hear the representative explaining the situation.

Then my father shouted:

"Do you know who I am?""

The representative apparently didn't care.

My father ended the call and threw the phone onto the sofa.

"This is not over.""

I nodded.

"No. It isn't.""

He gathered his papers.

My mother stood slowly.

Vanessa picked up her handbag.

As they reached the front door, my father turned around.

"You'll regret humiliating us.""

I looked directly at him.

"You should have thought about humiliation before you let your daughter attack my wife.""

They left.

I locked the door.

For the first time in ten years, the house was quiet.

But my phone buzzed almost immediately.

A message from Michael.

*Michael:* Daniel, we found the supporting documents for the $42,000 transfer to Vanessa.

I opened the attachment.

There was an invoice.

A signature.

And a bank account number.

Then Michael sent another message.

*Michael:* There's a bigger problem. The transfer wasn't made from your father's personal funds. It came directly from the operating company's payroll account.

I stared at the screen.

My sister hadn't just been receiving money from me.

My father had apparently been using company funds to disguise the payments.

And the next document Michael sent made the situation much worse.

It was an email from my father to the company's accountant.

The subject line read:

*Keep Daniel Out of This.*
