Chapter 7: The Brother I Never Knew

The room felt smaller.

The walls seemed to close in around us as the stranger stood in my living room, looking at me like he had been waiting years for this moment.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t even process what I was seeing.

“My brother?””

The man nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Emily looked at me.

“Dad… you never told me you had a brother.””

“Because I didn’t know.””

My own voice sounded unfamiliar.

The man gave a bitter smile.

“That’s the point.””

Vanessa stood near the couch, frozen.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

The man turned toward her.

“Funny. That’s exactly what Rachel said when she found out I was alive.””

My heart stopped.

Rachel.

Every conversation kept coming back to her.

Every secret.

Every lie.

Every missing piece.

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at me for a long moment.

“My name is Michael.””

The name meant nothing.

And somehow, that hurt even more.

“You expect me to believe you’re my brother?””

He reached into his suitcase and pulled out an old photograph.

He placed it on the table.

I looked down.

It was my father.

My mother.

And a little boy standing beside them.

A little boy who looked almost exactly like me.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Same birthmark near his eyebrow.

My hands started shaking.

“No…”

Michael watched my reaction.

“Your father wanted everyone to believe I disappeared.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew the truth.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew about him.””

She said nothing.

That was answer enough.

Emily stepped forward.

“Dad, she knew everything.””

Michael looked at my daughter.

“You’re Emily.””

She stiffened.

“How do you know my name?””

“Because your mother talked about you every day.””

The room went quiet.

Emily’s expression changed.

“You knew my mom?””

Michael nodded.

“She was the only person in this family who tried to fix what your grandfather broke.””

I looked at him.

“My grandfather?””

“My father.””

The words felt impossible.

Michael walked closer to the table.

“Richard Carter built everything on secrets. He destroyed anyone who threatened his reputation.””

I shook my head.

“My father helped me after Rachel died.””

Michael laughed quietly.

“That’s what he wanted you to believe.””

My anger rose.

“You’re accusing my father without proof.””

Michael looked at Vanessa.

“Ask her.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa looked down.

“Ask her what?””

Michael’s voice hardened.

“Ask her who deleted the original footage from the night Rachel died.””

My heart pounded.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Answer me.””

She swallowed.

“I…”

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I deleted it.””

Emily gasped.

“You did what?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I didn’t know what it showed.””

“You deleted evidence without knowing?””

“I was scared!””

Her voice broke.

“Thomas told me if that footage got out, everyone would go to prison.””

I stared at her.

“So you helped them.””

“I was trying to protect Rachel.””

“By destroying the only thing that could prove what happened?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I thought I was helping.””

Michael stepped forward.

“No. You were helping them hide it.””

I looked between them.

“Who is ‘them’?””

Nobody answered.

That silence told me everything.

There was someone else.

Someone still hiding.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time from my father.

*Do not trust Michael. He is not your brother. He is the reason your mother left.*

I stared at the screen.

Two people.

Two stories.

Both claiming to know the truth.

I looked up.

“Someone is lying.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

He looked at the message from Richard.

Then back at me.

“Your father.””

Before I could respond, Michael opened his suitcase.

Inside were documents.

Hundreds of pages.

And on top was a file with one name written across it.

Rachel Carter.

Michael pushed it toward me.

“Your wife discovered this before she died.””

I touched the folder.

“What is it?””

His expression turned serious.

“The proof that Rachel was never involved in the crime.””

May you like

He paused.

“And the proof that someone in your own family wanted her silent forever.””
