Chapter 12: What Was Hidden Behind The Wall

My old office had not been touched since Rachel died.

I avoided it.

Too many memories.

Too many reminders.

Every notebook.

Every photograph.

Every small thing she left behind felt like a piece of my life I couldn’t pick up again.

But now someone had entered.

Someone had searched through it.

Someone had hidden something there.

We drove there immediately.

Nobody spoke during the entire trip.

When we arrived, I unlocked the door.

The room smelled exactly the same.

Dust.

Old paper.

Rachel’s perfume.

For a second, I expected her to walk in and ask why everyone looked so serious.

Then reality returned.

Emily entered behind me.

“Where do we look?””

I stared at the walls.

“I don’t know.””

Michael walked around slowly.

“Whoever hid something here wanted it found eventually.””

Richard stayed near the doorway.

Watching.

Always watching.

That bothered me.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“You’re not leaving.””

His expression hardened.

“Excuse me?””

“You came this far. You’re going to see everything.””

He smiled slightly.

“You really think I’m afraid?””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I think you’re afraid of what I’ll find.””

Michael noticed something.

“The wall.””

We all turned.

Behind Rachel’s old bookshelf was a small crack.

A crack that shouldn’t have been there.

I moved the bookshelf.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small recorder.

A notebook.

And an envelope.

The envelope had my name.

Daniel.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a note.

*If you found this, it means I was right.*

Rachel.

I sat down.

The recorder was old.

But it still worked.

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then Rachel’s voice.

“Daniel…”

Everyone froze.

“If you’re hearing this, then I didn’t get the chance to tell you the truth.””

My eyes filled immediately.

“I need you to understand something.””

A pause.

“I never betrayed you.””

I closed my eyes.

The words I needed to hear.

“But someone wants you to believe I did.””

The recording continued.

“Richard knows what happened. Thomas knows what happened. And Vanessa knows more than she admits.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

Rachel’s voice became softer.

“But there is one person who knows everything.””

Static.

A pause.

Then Rachel whispered:

“Daniel… the person who caused my accident is someone you love.””

The recording cut.

Everyone stood frozen.

Then the device clicked.

A second recording started automatically.

Rachel’s voice returned.

But this time, she sounded terrified.

“He found me.””

My heart stopped.

“Daniel, if you hear this, don’t trust…”

The audio distorted.

Then one final sentence came through.

A sentence that changed everything.

“Don’t trust Emily.””

The room went silent.

I looked at my daughter.

Emily looked horrified.

“Dad…”

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

May you like

Because Rachel’s final words had left us with one impossible question.

Why would my wife warn me not to trust my own daughter?
