Chapter 13: The Truth Emily Carried
The room felt colder after the recording ended.
Nobody looked away from Emily.
And I hated that.
Because for one horrible second, a small part of me wondered.
Not because I believed Rachel was accusing our daughter.
But because someone had carefully built a maze of lies around my family, and every path seemed to lead to someone I loved.
Emily’s face was pale.
“Dad…”
Her voice cracked.
“I know what that sounded like.””
I couldn’t answer.
She looked at the recorder.
“Mom wasn’t warning you about me.””
Everyone froze.
“What do you mean?”” I asked.
Emily wiped her eyes.
“She was warning you about what I knew.””
I stared at her.
“Explain.””
She looked at the floor.
“I found out the truth before she died.””
My heart sank.
“What truth?””
Emily sat down slowly.
“The night Mom died, I wasn’t asleep.””
Nobody spoke.
“I heard her arguing with someone.””
My entire body went still.
“Who?””
Emily looked toward Richard.
Then toward Vanessa.
“I don’t know.””
Richard immediately stepped forward.
“She doesn’t know because she’s lying.””
I turned sharply.
“Enough.””
My father stopped.
For once, he looked uncomfortable.
Emily continued.
“Mom told me to stay in my room. She told me no matter what I heard, I shouldn’t come out.””
“Why?””
“Because she was scared someone would use me against you.””
The words hurt.
My daughter had been a child.
And she had been carrying this alone.
“What happened next?””
Emily took a shaky breath.
“I heard a crash outside.””
She closed her eyes.
“I saw Mom’s car.””
My throat tightened.
“You went outside?””
She nodded.
“I was seventeen. I was scared. I didn’t know what to do.””
Michael stepped closer.
“What did you see?””
Emily looked at him.
“I saw someone standing near the car.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“Grandpa.””
The room exploded.
Richard’s face changed.
“That’s impossible.””
Emily shook her head.
“No. It isn’t.””
“You were a child. You were confused.””
“I was scared, Grandpa.””
Her voice became stronger.
“But I remember.””
Richard looked at me.
“Daniel, you can’t believe this.””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””
That was the truth.
The person I trusted most might have destroyed my family.
The person I accused might have saved it.
The person I raised might have protected me from the truth.
Emily reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I never opened this.””
“What is it?””
“Mom gave it to me that night.””
I stared.
“Then why didn’t you show me?””
“Because she told me not to unless I had no other choice.””
She handed it to me.
Inside was a single page.
Rachel’s handwriting.
Emily,
If you are reading this, then everything has gone wrong.
I need you to remember one thing.
Your father loves you more than anything.
But love can make people blind.
I felt my eyes burn.
Rachel continued:
If Daniel ever doubts you, show him this.
Emily turned the page.
There was a second message.
Not for me.
For her.
Emily, I need you to protect your father from the truth until he is ready.
Because the person who hurt me will try to make him choose between the people he loves.
I looked up.
Emily was crying.
“She knew.””
I whispered.
“She knew someone would try to turn us against each other.””
A sudden sound came from outside.
A car door.
Everyone froze.
Michael moved toward the window.
“There’s someone leaving.””
I followed his gaze.
A black car was speeding away.
Richard’s face changed.
“Impossible.””
I noticed.
He recognized the car.
“Who was that?””
He didn’t answer.
“Richard.””
Finally, he whispered:
“Thomas.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Thomas.
*You finally found Rachel’s message. Good. Now come alone if you want to know who actually killed her.*
I looked at the screen.
Then at my family.
May you like
The final lie was waiting.
And this time, I was going to hear it from the person who started everything.
