Chapter 4: The Hidden File
For five seconds, nobody in the living room spoke.
The words from the security guard stayed in the air like smoke.
Someone had entered my house.
Someone had gone upstairs.
Someone had been looking for something in Emily’s room.
I looked at my daughter.
She was standing perfectly still, but I could see her fingers trembling around her phone.
“Emily,” I said quietly.
“What is he talking about?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more than anything.
My daughter had always been honest with me. Even when she was afraid, even when she knew I might be angry, she told me the truth.
But now she was looking at the floor.
“Emily.””
She finally looked up.
“Dad… I didn’t know if I should tell you.””
My chest tightened.
“Tell me what?””
Vanessa suddenly interrupted.
“Daniel, this is getting out of control.””
I turned toward her.
“No. This was already out of control when you pushed that stroller.””
Her face twisted.
“I told you, I didn’t mean for anyone to get hurt.””
“But someone could have.””
The room went silent again.
Clara quietly took Lily upstairs to calm her down. I was grateful she did. My daughter didn’t need to see any more of this.
I looked back at Emily.
“What’s upstairs?””
She swallowed.
“Something Mom left me.””
The mention of Rachel’s name changed the atmosphere instantly.
Vanessa looked away.
That small reaction didn’t escape me.
“You know about this?”” I asked her.
“No.””
The answer came too fast.
Emily noticed too.
“She’s lying.””
Vanessa glared at her.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Emily unlocked her phone again.
“Actually, I do.””
She opened another video.
This one wasn’t from the security cameras.
It was a recording of a conversation.
A conversation between Vanessa and someone else.
My heart started pounding before the audio even began.
Vanessa’s voice came through the phone.
“I need that file before Daniel finds it.””
A man replied.
“What if Emily already has it?””
“She doesn’t know what it means.””
The recording ended.
I stared at Vanessa.
“What file?””
She said nothing.
“What file, Vanessa?””
Her eyes moved toward Emily.
That was when I understood.
Whatever this was, it involved my daughter.
Emily walked toward the stairs.
“I’ll show you.””
“Emily, wait.””
She stopped.
“I’m tired of protecting secrets, Dad.””
Her voice was quiet.
“Mom trusted me with something, and I’ve been carrying it alone for almost a year.””
Those words hit me harder than any accusation.
Almost a year?
My own daughter had been carrying a secret connected to her mother, and I never knew.
We walked upstairs.
Vanessa followed.
I immediately turned around.
“You stay here.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
For once, she listened.
Emily led me into her bedroom.
She walked to her bookshelf and removed three books.
Behind them was a small wooden box.
I recognized it instantly.
It was one of Rachel’s old boxes.
My hands felt numb.
“Where did you get that?””
“Mom gave it to me before she died.””
I froze.
“What?””
Emily looked down.
“She knew she was getting weaker.””
My throat tightened.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because she asked me not to.””
That hurt.
But I knew Rachel.
If she had asked Emily to keep something, there had to be a reason.
Emily opened the box.
Inside was a flash drive.
A handwritten letter.
And a photograph.
I picked up the photograph first.
It was Rachel.
But she wasn’t alone.
Standing beside her was Vanessa.
And another man.
A man I recognized.
My former business partner.
Thomas.
The same man who had disappeared after our company lawsuit two years earlier.
“What is this?””
Emily handed me the letter.
“Read it.””
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Rachel’s handwriting.
My hands shook as I unfolded the paper.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, something happened that made Emily believe the truth needed to come out.
I’m sorry I didn’t tell you everything.
But I was afraid.
I looked up.
“Afraid of what?””
Emily whispered:
The letter continued.
Vanessa knows what happened the night before my accident. She knows why Thomas disappeared. She knows the truth about the money that was taken from the company.
My heart stopped.
Rachel’s death had always been called an accident.
A rainy night.
A dangerous road.
A tragic mistake.
But now I was holding a letter that suggested she had been afraid.
I looked at Emily.
“Why didn’t you give me this before?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Because the night Mom gave it to me, she told me something else.””
“What?””
Emily looked toward the bedroom door.
Toward Vanessa.
“She said if Vanessa ever came back into our lives…”
May you like
She paused.
“She told me not to trust her.””
