Chapter 3: The Secret Vanessa Was Protecting

The room went completely silent.

Nobody moved.

Not even Vanessa.

I could hear Lily breathing against my chest.

The security employee continued speaking through the phone.

“Mr. Carter, the second camera captured someone entering through the back door.””

My eyes moved slowly toward Vanessa.

Her face had lost all color.

“You know who it was?”” I asked.

The man hesitated.

“Yes, sir.””

“Who?””

Before he could answer, Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t listen to them.””

Everyone turned.

Her voice was no longer shaky.

It was sharp.

“Don’t make this worse.””

I stared at her.

“Worse?””

She realized what she had said.

Emily noticed too.

“You already know who it is.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Stay out of this.””

“No,” Emily replied.

“You brought my family into this.””

I ended the call and put the phone on speaker.

“Tell me.””

The security employee took a breath.

“Mr. Carter, the person who entered your home before the incident was…”

A loud crash interrupted him.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa had knocked a glass vase off the table.

It shattered across the floor.

“Enough!”” she shouted.

Her face was twisted with panic.

“You don’t know anything!””

Clara stepped back, holding Lily protectively.

I had known Vanessa for almost ten years.

I had seen her angry.

I had seen her jealous.

But I had never seen fear like this.

“Who was here?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Still nothing.

Then Emily walked closer.

“Dad, look.””

She picked up the phone and opened the security app.

“There’s another clip.””

I frowned.

“Another one?””

She nodded.

“I didn’t show you everything.””

My stomach dropped.

“What do you mean?””

Emily looked at Vanessa.

“I wanted to be sure before accusing someone.””

That was when I realized something.

My daughter had known more than she told me.

She hadn’t shown me the video because she wanted revenge.

She showed me because she was protecting someone.

“Play it,” I said.

Emily pressed the screen.

The footage was darker than the first.

It showed the back entrance.

A figure walked inside.

At first, the person’s face was hidden.

Then they turned toward the camera.

I felt my heart stop.

Because I knew that face.

It was someone who had no reason to be inside my house.

Someone Vanessa had sworn she barely knew.

Someone who had looked me in the eyes earlier that week and lied.

“Dad,” Emily whispered.

I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen.

The person in the video walked directly toward Vanessa.

They handed her something.

A small envelope.

Then Vanessa opened it.

Her expression changed instantly.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa finally whispered:

“You don’t understand what that was.””

I looked at her.

“Then explain.””

She shook her head.

“I was trying to protect this family.””

I almost laughed.

“By putting my daughter in danger?””

“No!””

Her scream echoed through the room.

For a second, she looked desperate.

Then she looked at Emily.

And I saw something that made my blood run cold.

She wasn’t afraid of me.

She was afraid of what Emily knew.

“Where did you get that footage?”” Vanessa asked.

Emily didn’t answer.

Vanessa took one step toward her.

“Who else saw it?””

I immediately moved between them.

“Don’t come near my daughter.””

Vanessa stopped.

The woman who had spent the last hour pretending to be helpless suddenly looked dangerous.

The security employee was still on speaker.

“Mr. Carter?””

I picked up the phone.

“Yes?””

“Sir, there’s one more thing you need to know.””

I looked at the broken vase on the floor.

At Clara, who had almost lost everything.

At Emily, who had uncovered the truth.

And at Vanessa, who was hiding something much bigger than a lie about a stroller.

“What?””

The man’s voice became quiet.

“The person who entered your house wasn’t there to meet Vanessa.””

A pause.

“He was there to find something hidden in your daughter’s room.””

May you like

My blood turned cold.

Because upstairs was where Emily kept the one thing Vanessa could never afford to let anyone discover.
