Chapter 14: The Last Confession

The abandoned warehouse smelled like rust and rain.

I walked inside alone.

At least, that’s what Thomas thought.

Emily had tracked my location.

Michael followed from a distance.

And before I left, I secretly sent the evidence to a lawyer.

I had spent too many years trusting the wrong people.

I wasn’t making that mistake again.

“Daniel.””

Thomas stepped out of the shadows.

Older than I remembered.

Tired.

Broken.

But still carrying the same confidence.

“You came.””

I stared at him.

“Why did you kill Rachel?””

He looked down.

“I didn’t.””

I laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

“Because it’s true.””

He stepped closer.

“Rachel’s death wasn’t supposed to happen.””

My hands tightened.

“Then what happened?””

Thomas looked away.

“Richard wanted the evidence destroyed.””

My stomach turned.

“He hired you.””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

“Why?””

“Because Rachel discovered everything.””

Thomas walked toward an old table.

“She found out Richard had been using the company to hide illegal transactions.””

I looked at him.

“And Vanessa?””

“She helped because she was afraid.””

“And Michael?””

Thomas sighed.

“Michael tried to expose him.””

I felt a chill.

“So everyone knew except me.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

That hurt more than anything.

I had spent two years grieving while everyone around me held pieces of the truth.

“Then why did Rachel die?””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Because she trusted the wrong person.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Richard.””

I already knew.

But I needed to hear it.

“What did he do?””

Thomas swallowed.

“Rachel planned to meet Michael that night. She had proof.””

“What proof?””

“A recording.””

I remembered the voicemail.

“The one she left.””

Thomas nodded.

“Richard knew about it.””

“Because?””

“Because someone inside your house told him.””

I froze.

“Who?””

Thomas looked toward the entrance.

A figure appeared.

Richard.

My father.

“You always were dramatic, Thomas.””

My blood went cold.

Thomas stepped back.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Richard smiled.

“Neither should you.””

I looked between them.

“You worked together.””

Richard sighed.

“I did what I had to do.””

My voice shook.

“You destroyed my family.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Your family destroyed itself.””

I stepped forward.

“You killed Rachel.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“No.””

A pause.

“I made a mistake.””

The words were worse than a confession.

“What mistake?””

Richard looked away.

“I followed her.””

The rain outside grew louder.

“I wanted the evidence.””

“And?””

“She refused to give it to me.””

My fists clenched.

“What happened?””

“She drove away.””

He stopped.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“I followed her.””

Silence.

“She lost control of the car.””

“You caused the accident.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I caused the situation.””

I stared at him.

“You let her die.””

Richard looked down.

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Emily’s voice came from behind him.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

She stood there.

Holding her phone.

“You don’t get to say you’re sorry now.””

Richard looked shocked.

“How long have you been there?””

“Long enough.””

She held up the phone.

“The whole confession.””

Richard’s face changed.

“You recorded me?””

She looked at him.

“You taught me something.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Never trust someone just because they’re family.””

Richard moved toward her.

Michael stepped in front.

“You’re done.””

For the first time in my life, my father looked small.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a man who had lost everything.

As police lights appeared outside, I looked at Rachel’s final recording one more time.

There was still one thing I didn’t understand.

Why did she say not to trust Emily?

Then Emily walked toward me.

She held out another piece of paper.

“Dad.””

I looked at it.

A final note from Rachel.

And the first sentence answered everything.

*I knew someone would try to make you believe Emily betrayed you.*
