Chapter 2: The Woman Behind The Tears
The video played silently for three seconds.
Then Vanessa’s voice filled the room.
“Come on, Lily. Stop crying.””
My blood ran cold.
The camera angle came from the hallway, pointed directly toward the staircase.
It showed everything.
Vanessa stood beside the stroller.
No fear.
No panic.
No tears.
Just a woman calmly looking around to make sure nobody was watching.
Emily stood beside me, watching my reaction carefully.
Clara covered her mouth.
“Oh my God…”
Vanessa took a step backward.
“Wait,” she said quickly.
“That doesn’t show anything.””
But everyone had already seen enough to know something was wrong.
In the video, Vanessa reached into the stroller and adjusted the blanket covering Lily.
Then she looked toward the staircase.
She smiled.
A small, cold smile.
My hands curled into fists.
“Why were you smiling?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Daniel, you’re misunderstanding.””
“No,” Emily said.
“You’re finally understanding.””
Vanessa glared at her.
“You recorded me?””
Emily crossed her arms.
“I set up cameras after Lily was born because Mom always worried about leaving her alone.””
The mention of my late wife made the room quiet.
My wife, Rachel, had passed away two years earlier.
She was the reason our home still felt like a family instead of just a building.
And she had always trusted Clara.
Vanessa knew that.
Everyone knew that.
The video continued.
Vanessa stepped away from the stroller.
Then she looked toward the doorway.
A few seconds later, Clara entered carrying laundry.
The moment Clara appeared, Vanessa’s entire expression changed.
She suddenly grabbed the stroller handle.
She pulled it backward.
The wheels moved.
Straight toward the stairs.
“Stop!”” Clara screamed in the video.
She dropped the laundry and ran.
She grabbed the stroller just inches before it reached the first step.
Then Vanessa screamed.
The same scream I heard when I walked in.
The same scream that convinced me she was the victim.
I felt sick.
All this time, I thought I was protecting my daughter.
But I was protecting the person who endangered her.
“Why?”” I whispered.
Vanessa looked away.
“Daniel, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She stayed silent.
“Explain!”” I shouted.
Lily started crying again, and Clara immediately held her closer.
The sound snapped me back.
I lowered my voice.
“Why did you do that?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears again.
But this time, I didn’t believe them.
“Because nobody ever chooses me,” she said.
Everyone stared at her.
“What?”” I asked.
She laughed bitterly.
“Rachel was always perfect. Emily was always her little princess. Then Lily came along, and suddenly everyone had another reason to love this family.””
“That is insane,” Emily whispered.
Vanessa looked at her.
“You don’t know what it feels like to be invisible.””
“You almost hurt my sister because you wanted attention?”” Emily asked.
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“I didn’t mean for things to go that far.””
The sentence made the room colder.
Because it meant she admitted something.
She knew exactly what she had done.
I walked toward Clara.
The woman I had accused.
The woman I had looked at like a stranger.
“Clara…”
She wiped her tears quickly.
“Yes, Mr. Daniel?””
I hated the distance in her voice.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked down.
“I know you are.””
Those three words hurt more than anger.
Because she wasn’t furious.
She was disappointed.
And I deserved that.
I took Lily from her carefully.
My daughter grabbed my shirt with her tiny fingers.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You’re leaving this house.””
Her eyes widened.
“Daniel, please.””
“No.””
“You’re really going to throw me away over a mistake?””
Emily stepped forward.
“A mistake is dropping a glass.””
Her voice shook with anger.
“A mistake is forgetting an appointment.””
She pointed at the phone.
“That was a choice.””
Vanessa stared at all of us.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
But before I could call anyone, my phone started ringing.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then Emily looked at the screen and froze.
“Dad…”
“What?””
She swallowed.
“That number…”
Her face went pale.
“That’s the security company.””
I answered.
A man’s urgent voice came through.
“Mr. Carter, we need to inform you about another piece of footage.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What footage?””
There was a long pause.
Then the man said:
“The camera you watched was not the only one that recorded what happened today.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What are you saying?””
May you like
The man lowered his voice.
“Sir… someone entered your house before Vanessa came downstairs.””
