Chapter 11: Clara’s Secret

Nobody spoke after Clara’s confession.

Not even Richard.

The woman I had trusted for years stood in front of me with tears running down her face.

The same woman I had accused hours earlier.

The same woman who saved Lily.

And now she was connected to the night my wife died.

“Why?”” I asked.

My voice sounded empty.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Clara looked at the floor.

“Because Rachel made me promise.””

“Rachel?””

She nodded.

“She knew something was wrong.””

I walked closer.

“Something about what?””

Clara looked toward Richard.

Then Michael.

Then me.

“She knew someone close to her was dangerous.””

Richard crossed his arms.

“Convenient story.””

Clara looked at him.

“You know exactly what happened.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“Be careful.””

Clara laughed sadly.

“After everything, you’re still threatening people?””

That was the first time I saw Clara stand up to him.

“What happened that night?”” I asked.

She took a deep breath.

“Rachel called me three days before the accident.””

“Why?””

“She asked me to watch the girls.””

My eyes lowered.

“She thought something might happen.””

Clara nodded.

“She told me if anything happened to her, I needed to protect Emily and Lily.””

Emily stepped closer.

“Why me?””

Clara looked at her.

“Because your mother trusted you.””

Emily’s eyes filled.

“She gave you the box.””

Clara nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Emily.

“You knew?””

She shook her head.

“Not about Clara.””

Clara continued.

“That night, Rachel was meeting someone.””

“Thomas?””

“No.””

Everyone froze.

“Then who?””

Clara looked at me.

“You.””

I felt confused.

“Me?””

“She wanted to meet you.””

My heart sank.

“But I was home.””

“No.””

Clara shook her head.

“You were supposed to meet her.””

I remembered that night.

The argument.

Rachel had called me.

I ignored it because I was angry.

We had argued earlier about my father.

She said I was refusing to see the truth.

I told her she was paranoid.

Then she died.

The memory hit me like a wave.

“She called me.””

Clara nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t I answer?””

Nobody spoke.

Because we all knew.

I was angry.

I let pride win.

Clara whispered:

“She left you a voicemail.””

My head lifted.

“What?””

“She told me to save it.””

My hands shook.

“Where is it?””

Clara looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

Richard suddenly moved.

“You don’t have it?””

Everyone looked at him.

The panic in his voice was obvious.

Emily noticed too.

“Why do you care?””

Richard recovered quickly.

“I’m just asking.””

“No,” I said.

I stared at him.

“You’re afraid.””

For the first time, my father looked uncertain.

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

*The voicemail is the only thing that proves what happened that night.*

Then another message arrived.

A photo.

A storage box.

My old office.

A label on the box:

*Rachel’s Final Evidence.*

My blood ran cold.

Because that office had been empty for two years.

Nobody should have known about it.

I looked at everyone.

“Someone has been inside my office.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Who has access?””

I slowly answered.

“Only family.””

Richard’s face changed.

Vanessa looked away.

Clara looked terrified.

Emily whispered:

“Dad…”

I turned.

“What?””

She pointed at the phone.

“There’s another message.””

I opened it.

May you like

Only four words.

*Look behind the wall.*
