Chapter 9: The Brother They Never Mentioned

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Daniel held the photograph between his fingers.

Malik Carter.

Four years earlier.

Standing beside Eleanor Dalton.

But Malik was only eight years old.

The dates were impossible.

"Who is this?"" Daniel asked.

Michael Bennett looked at the photograph.

"His older brother.""

Daniel lowered it.

"Malik has an older brother?""

"Yes.""

"What's his name?""

Michael hesitated.

"Jordan Carter.""

Daniel looked toward Collins.

Neither officer spoke.

He turned back to Michael.

"Why didn't Renee mention him?""

"Because Jordan disappeared from the school records after what happened.""

"Disappeared?""

Michael nodded.

"He was a student at Westbrook. Same teacher. Same principal. Same district administrator.""

Daniel felt a chill move down his back.

"Where is he now?""

Michael shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Daniel stared at him.

"Mr. Bennett, you need to explain everything.""

Michael sat down.

"I met Jordan's father at the district maintenance office. We worked together for a while. He told me his son was having trouble at school.""

"Trouble how?""

"He said Jordan had started refusing to attend class. He came home with bruises and told his father that Ms. Dalton had been punishing him.""

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

"How old was Jordan?""

"Ten.""

"Why was Malik at the school?""

Michael shook his head.

"I don't know. But I remember his father mentioning that the school had made a complaint against their family.""

"Renee?""

"No. A different relative. His father, I think.""

Daniel opened his notebook.

"Where can I find Jordan's father?""

Michael lowered his eyes.

"He died two years ago.""

Daniel paused.

"How?""

"Car accident.""

"Was anyone else involved?""

Michael shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Holloway suddenly interrupted.

"There's more.""

Daniel turned.

"Then start talking.""

Holloway opened the cardboard box.

Inside were dozens of envelopes, photographs, and printed school documents.

He pulled out a folder.

"Four years ago, Hargrove ordered me to transfer several old student files into a separate archive.""

"Why?""

"He said the district was preparing for an inspection.""

Daniel opened the folder.

The first page contained a list of names.

Jordan Carter.

Noah Bennett.

Olivia Grant.

Ethan Parker.

Several others.

Beside each name was a date and a handwritten note.

*RELOCATION.*

*WITHDRAWN.*

*CLOSED.*

Daniel looked up.

"How many children?""

Holloway swallowed.

"Eleven.""

Collins took the folder.

"You're telling us eleven children were involved?""

"At least eleven.""

Daniel stared at the list.

Then he noticed something at the bottom.

A final name.

*Malik Carter.*

The date was three weeks earlier.

But the note beside it was different.

*PENDING — REPEAT FAMILY CONTACT.*

Daniel felt his blood run cold.

"What does that mean?""

Holloway looked at him.

"It means someone was already planning how to handle Malik before the incident on Teacher Appreciation Day.""

At 4:10 p.m., Daniel called Renee Carter.

She answered immediately.

"Officer?""

"Mrs. Carter, I need to ask you something important.""

"Is Malik okay?""

"Yes. He's safe. But I need to know whether Malik has an older brother named Jordan.""

Silence.

Then Renee whispered:

"Why are you asking about Jordan?""

Daniel glanced at the photograph.

"Because we've found records suggesting he attended Westbrook.""

Renee's breathing changed.

"He didn't attend Westbrook.""

Daniel frowned.

"Are you sure?""

"Yes. Jordan went to another elementary school.""

"How old is he?""

There was another pause.

"He's twelve.""

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Four years earlier, Jordan would have been eight.

The image showed a boy who looked older.

He checked the date again.

Four years earlier.

"Mrs. Carter, do you have a photograph of Jordan?""

"Yes. Why?""

"Could you send it to me through the secure contact system?""

Renee's voice trembled.

"Officer, what's going on?""

Daniel chose his words carefully.

"We've found a photograph of a child identified as Jordan Carter at Westbrook. I'm trying to establish whether it's your son.""

Renee went quiet.

Then she said:

"Jordan has been living with his father.""

Daniel looked up.

"His father?""

"Yes. My former husband. We separated when Jordan was little.""

"Does Malik see him?""

"Sometimes.""

"What's his name?""

"Marcus Carter.""

Daniel wrote it down.

"Has Marcus ever mentioned Westbrook?""

Renee hesitated.

"Actually, yes. He used to say the district was corrupt. I thought he was talking about his old workplace.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did he work for the district?""

"He was a maintenance supervisor.""

Michael Bennett looked up sharply.

Daniel noticed.

"Mrs. Carter, can you contact Marcus?""

"I can try. But we haven't spoken properly in months.""

"Please do. And don't discuss the investigation with anyone else until we speak again.""

After ending the call, Daniel turned toward Michael.

"You knew Marcus Carter?""

Michael nodded slowly.

"He was my supervisor.""

"Did you know he had two sons?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Michael looked ashamed.

"Because I thought Jordan had left the school years ago.""

Daniel held up the photograph.

"Apparently, he was still connected to it.""

At 5:00 p.m., Renee sat at her kitchen table, staring at an old family photograph.

Jordan was standing beside Malik.

Jordan was taller, with a wide smile and one front tooth slightly crooked.

She had taken the picture two years earlier.

She opened her phone and called Marcus.

He answered after the fourth ring.

"Renee?""

"Marcus, I need to ask you something.""

"What happened?""

"Did Jordan ever attend Westbrook Elementary?""

Silence.

Then Marcus asked:

"Who told you that?""

Renee's fingers tightened around the phone.

"Someone found a photograph.""

Marcus exhaled sharply.

"Listen to me. Don't let anyone take Jordan's photograph.""

"Why?""

"Because they're going to use it.""

"Use it for what?""

"To prove something that never happened.""

Renee stood.

"Marcus, stop speaking in riddles. What happened to our son?""

His voice dropped.

"Jordan was involved in something at that school.""

Renee closed her eyes.

"What?""

"I told you about the teacher. The one who used to work there.""

"Ms. Dalton?""

Marcus didn't answer.

Renee's heart began pounding.

"You knew?""

"I tried to handle it.""

"Handle what?""

"Renee, I can't explain this over the phone.""

"Then come here.""

"I can't.""

"Why?""

A long silence followed.

Then Marcus whispered:

"Because they're watching me.""

The call ended.

Renee immediately dialed Daniel.

At 6:15 p.m., Daniel received the photograph Renee had sent.

He opened it.

Jordan Carter.

The boy in the family photograph was the same child shown beside Ms. Dalton in the archived image.

But there was something else.

The image had been taken inside Classroom 12.

Daniel enlarged the background.

On the wall was a calendar.

The year was clearly visible.

It was four years earlier.

He called Collins.

"Get me every record associated with Marcus Carter.""

Collins searched the district database.

A few seconds later, he looked up.

"Reed, there's a problem.""

"What?""

"Marcus Carter was listed as a district employee until four years ago.""

"Then?""

"His employment was terminated.""

"Why?""

Collins opened the personnel file.

The reason appeared in bold letters.

*GROSS MISCONDUCT — UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS TO STUDENT RECORDS.*

Daniel frowned.

"That's interesting.""

Collins scrolled down.

"There's a disciplinary report.""

"Read it.""

Collins hesitated.

"It says Marcus attempted to remove confidential student records from the district office.""

"Did he?""

"The report claims he was stealing them.""

Daniel looked at the old photograph.

"Or trying to expose something.""

At 7:00 p.m., a district investigator arrived with a sealed evidence box.

"We found this in the records warehouse.""

Daniel opened it.

Inside were several old videotapes, a notebook, and a small envelope.

The notebook belonged to Marcus Carter.

Its pages were filled with handwritten dates and student names.

Daniel turned to the final page.

A sentence had been underlined three times.

*If anything happens to me, make sure Jordan knows the truth.*

Daniel stared at it.

Then he opened the envelope.

Inside was a folded letter.

The handwriting matched the notebook.

To whoever finds this:

I worked at Westbrook for nine years. I saw things that should never happen to children. I tried to report them, but Robert Hargrove told me my job would disappear if I continued.

I kept copies because I knew the original records would eventually be destroyed.

My son Jordan saw something he should never have seen.

He knows what happened in Classroom 12.

He knows who entered the storage room.

And he knows why they were so desperate to keep the cameras turned off.

Daniel stopped reading.

He looked at Collins.

"Where is Jordan now?""

Collins searched the family records.

Then he found an emergency contact address.

A residential facility outside the city.

Daniel checked the date.

Jordan had been placed there six months earlier.

The reason was listed as:

*TEMPORARY PROTECTIVE PLACEMENT — FAMILY REQUEST.*

Daniel frowned.

"Who requested it?""

Collins opened the final page.

His expression changed.

"Reed...""

"What?""

"The placement authorization was signed by Robert Hargrove.""

Daniel felt the room tilt.

A district administrator had no authority to arrange a child's protective placement without the proper legal process.

He looked at the document again.

Then his phone vibrated.

An incoming message.

Unknown number.

*Stop looking for Jordan Carter. His father made the right decision. Leave the boy where he is.*

Daniel immediately called the number.

It was disconnected.

He turned toward Collins.

"We're going to that facility.""

Collins grabbed his jacket.

"Now?""

"Now.""

But before they could leave, Daniel received another message.

This one contained a photograph.

It showed Jordan standing outside the residential facility.

Beside him was a woman Daniel recognized immediately.

Eleanor Dalton.

May you like

Underneath the photograph were six words.

*Ask Jordan what happened to his father.*
