Chapter 5: The Boy Nobody Was Looking For

The following morning, Daniel arrived at Westbrook Elementary before sunrise.

He hadn't slept much.

The previous night's recordings had raised more questions than answers, and the name Robert Hargrove kept appearing in places where it shouldn't.

At 6:45 a.m., Linda unlocked the security office.

Daniel placed a coffee on her desk.

"Morning.""

She looked exhausted.

"Did you find anything else?""

"Not yet.""

He opened the archived attendance records.

"Susan Miller mentioned another little boy. Approximately seven years old. She believes he was involved in the incident with Hargrove.""

Linda leaned over.

"Three years ago?""

"That's what she said.""

Daniel searched the school's historical enrollment database.

Westbrook had hundreds of students over the previous three years.

He narrowed the search to second-grade classrooms supervised by Ms. Dalton.

Names appeared.

One by one, he checked the transfer records.

Then he found something unusual.

*Noah Bennett.*

Age at the time of the incident: Seven.

Enrollment status: Transferred.

Reason: Family relocation.

But the date didn't make sense.

The transfer had been processed on a Friday.

Noah had been marked absent for the entire week before it.

Daniel opened the student's file.

The parent contact information was incomplete.

The father's occupation was listed as district maintenance supervisor.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"Linda, find me every record associated with Noah Bennett.""

Linda began typing.

"His mother's name was Patricia. His father was Michael.""

Daniel checked the personnel directory.

Michael Bennett.

Former district maintenance supervisor.

Employment terminated three years earlier.

Reason: Voluntary resignation.

Daniel frowned.

"That's convenient.""

Linda opened another document.

"There's a note here.""

"What does it say?""

"Family withdrew student following internal disciplinary matter.""

Daniel turned.

"Internal disciplinary matter?""

Linda nodded.

"There's no explanation.""

Daniel grabbed his phone.

"Get me the district's old incident reports.""

At 8:10 a.m., Susan Miller arrived.

She carried a small flash drive inside a plastic evidence bag.

Daniel met her at the entrance.

"Thank you for coming.""

Susan looked over her shoulder.

"Is Hargrove here?""

"No.""

"Good.""

They entered the security office.

Susan sat down and placed the drive on the table.

"I've watched this recording hundreds of times," she said.

"I still hear that little boy crying.""

Daniel connected the drive to an isolated evidence computer.

"Let's see it.""

The video began.

It showed a classroom from a slightly elevated angle.

The recording was grainy, but the details were clear enough.

Ms. Dalton stood beside a small boy.

The child was holding a worksheet.

"Please, I want to go home," he said.

Dalton pointed toward the storage closet.

"Inside.""

The boy shook his head.

"I didn't do anything.""

"You're wasting my time.""

Then the classroom door opened.

Robert Hargrove entered.

He was younger in the recording, but unmistakable.

"Everything under control?"" he asked.

Dalton nodded.

"He's being difficult.""

Hargrove glanced at the boy.

"Your father works for this district, doesn't he?""

The child nodded.

"Then you should understand how important it is to follow instructions.""

The boy began crying.

Hargrove opened the storage closet.

"Put him inside for a few minutes. He'll calm down.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

The closet had no visible window.

The little boy backed away.

"Please.""

Dalton grabbed his arm.

The camera shook slightly as Susan moved her phone.

Then the footage captured Hargrove leaning toward the child.

"Your father needs his job, doesn't he?""

The boy stopped resisting.

He looked down.

And walked into the closet.

Daniel paused the video.

Susan covered her mouth.

"I tried to stop them," she whispered.

"I really did.""

"What happened afterward?""

"I went to the principal. She told me the boy's father had approved the arrangement.""

Daniel turned.

"Did you believe that?""

"No. But when I contacted the father, he wouldn't speak to me.""

"Why?""

Susan shook her head.

"I don't know. I think he was afraid.""

Daniel resumed the video.

A few minutes later, Hargrove returned to the classroom.

He placed a folder on Ms. Dalton's desk.

"Remember what we discussed.""

Dalton nodded.

"And the boy?""

"His family will handle the transfer.""

Hargrove lowered his voice.

"Good. We don't need another Carter situation.""

Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.

Carter.

Malik's last name.

But the recording was three years old.

How could they have known?

At 9:30 a.m., Daniel contacted Michael Bennett.

The phone rang six times before someone answered.

"Hello?""

"Mr. Bennett? My name is Officer Daniel Reed. I'm investigating a matter involving Westbrook Elementary.""

Silence.

Then a man's voice answered.

"I don't know anything about Westbrook.""

"Your son Noah attended the school three years ago.""

"I said I don't know anything.""

"Mr. Bennett, I have a recording.""

The man inhaled sharply.

"What recording?""

"A video showing your son being taken into a storage closet by Ms. Dalton and Robert Hargrove.""

There was a long silence.

Then Michael whispered:

"Where did you get that?""

"From a former teacher.""

"Delete it.""

Daniel sat forward.

"Excuse me?""

"You don't understand. Delete the recording and leave my family alone.""

"Mr. Bennett, your son may have been harmed.""

"He's fine.""

"Then why are you afraid to talk about it?""

Michael's voice cracked.

"Because I know what happens when people challenge that district.""

Daniel softened his tone.

"Did someone threaten you?""

"No.""

"Did someone threaten your family?""

Michael didn't answer.

Then he hung up.

Daniel stared at the phone.

At 11:00 a.m., Renee Carter arrived at the district office with Malik.

She had received a call requesting additional documentation of her earlier complaints.

Malik held her hand.

He was wearing a blue jacket and carrying Maya's drawing inside his backpack.

Daniel approached them.

"Good morning, Mrs. Carter.""

"Officer. Have you found anything?""

"We've recovered recordings suggesting this may have happened to other children.""

Renee's face tightened.

"Other children?""

"Yes.""

She looked down at Malik.

"How many?""

"We're still investigating.""

Malik tugged at her sleeve.

"Mommy?""

"Yes, baby?""

"Does that mean she hurt other kids too?""

Renee knelt.

"We don't know yet.""

Malik looked at Daniel.

"Can I ask you something?""

"Of course.""

"Did anybody help them?""

Daniel paused.

"We're trying to find out.""

Malik looked disappointed.

Then he said something quietly.

"Maybe they were scared like me.""

Daniel felt the words settle heavily in his chest.

At 1:15 p.m., Daniel received a message from Linda.

*Found something. Come back to the security office.*

He hurried upstairs.

Linda had a personnel file open on the computer.

"Look at this.""

She pointed to a photograph.

A young boy stood beside a woman outside the school.

Daniel recognized him from the old recording.

Noah Bennett.

Beside him was his father.

Michael Bennett.

But the photograph had been taken two months after Noah's supposed transfer.

And the location was unmistakable.

Westbrook Elementary.

Daniel leaned closer.

"Why was he here?""

Linda opened the attached incident report.

The document contained a single paragraph.

Parent requested return of personal belongings following student withdrawal. Meeting arranged with district administrator Robert Hargrove.

There was a handwritten note beneath it.

Do not permit contact with former teacher.

Daniel frowned.

"Why?""

Linda opened the next page.

It was blank.

The final page contained a signature.

Michael Bennett.

And beneath his signature, someone had written:

*NON-DISCLOSURE AGREEMENT — CONFIDENTIAL.*

Daniel sat back.

"Did you know the district made parents sign agreements like this?""

Linda shook her head.

"No. I've worked here for fourteen years.""

He studied the document.

Then he noticed something in the bottom corner.

A second signature.

Margaret Ellis.

The former principal.

But the date was different.

It had been signed three days before Malik's mother first complained about Ms. Dalton.

Daniel immediately called his supervisor.

"We need to expand this investigation.""

"What did you find?""

"A possible agreement involving a parent, a child, the principal, and Robert Hargrove.""

"What's the child's name?""

"Noah Bennett.""

His supervisor went quiet.

Then he said:

"Reed, don't contact the district again until I get there.""

"Why?""

"Because Robert Hargrove just filed a formal complaint against you.""

Daniel stared at the phone.

"What?""

"He's accusing you of stealing confidential student records and interfering with school operations.""

Daniel laughed in disbelief.

"He knows we're investigating him.""

"Apparently.""

Then his supervisor added:

"And there's something else. Hargrove claims he has evidence that the recording was illegally obtained.""

Daniel looked at the frozen image of Noah standing beside his father.

"Let him make that argument.""

"Daniel, listen to me. He's asking for your immediate suspension.""

The line went quiet.

Daniel looked through the glass at Malik and Renee waiting in the hallway.

Then he answered.

"If telling the truth gets me suspended, so be it.""

But before he could hang up, Linda called his name.

"Officer Reed!""

He turned.

She was staring at another file.

"You're not going to believe this.""

Daniel approached.

The document was a list of payments made to several school employees.

At the bottom was a name he recognized.

*Michael Bennett.*

Beside it was an amount.

$18,000.

May you like

And the payment date was three years earlier.

The same week Noah disappeared from Westbrook.
