Chapter 4: The Recording They Tried to Bury
Daniel Reed stood in the empty hallway, phone pressed against his ear.
For several seconds, he didn't speak.
Susan Miller's voice trembled on the other end.
"Officer, I kept that recording because I knew somebody would eventually need it.""
"Where are you right now, Ms. Miller?""
"At home.""
"Can you come to the school?""
"No. I don't want anyone from the district seeing me. They made my life miserable the last time I spoke up.""
Daniel glanced through the classroom window.
Renee was sitting beside Malik, gently fixing his collar. Maya was showing him something on a sheet of paper.
"Listen carefully," Daniel said.
"Nobody is asking you to confront anyone. I just need to know what you have.""
Susan exhaled.
"A video. It was recorded on my phone three years ago. I was teaching the classroom next door when I heard a child crying.""
"What did you see?""
"I saw Ms. Dalton holding a little girl by the wrist. She dragged her toward the storage closet.""
Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.
"Did you report it?""
"Immediately. I went straight to Margaret Ellis.""
"And?""
"She told me the girl had behavioral problems. She said I was interfering with another teacher's classroom.""
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
"Did you show her the recording?""
"Yes.""
"What happened to it?""
"She demanded that I delete it.""
"Did you?""
"No.""
A long silence followed.
Then Susan added something Daniel hadn't expected.
"The little girl in that recording was named Olivia Grant.""
Daniel opened his notebook.
"Do you know where she is now?""
"I think she's still in town. Her mother transferred her to another school after that incident.""
"Can you send me the recording through the official evidence system?""
"I can bring it to you tomorrow morning.""
"Ms. Miller, I need you to understand that this may become a criminal investigation.""
"I understand.""
Her voice broke.
"I should have spoken sooner.""
Daniel looked through the glass at Malik.
"You're speaking now. That's what matters.""
At 3:15 p.m., Renee Carter was preparing to take Malik home.
She had already spoken with Karen Mitchell, the child-protection specialist, and agreed to have Malik examined by a medical professional.
The boy had refused to let go of her hand.
Every time someone entered the counseling office, he looked toward the door.
Renee knelt beside him.
"Sweetheart, we're going home soon.""
"Are you coming back tomorrow?""
She brushed his hair away from his forehead.
"No, baby. Not to this classroom.""
"Will Ms. Dalton be there?""
"No.""
He studied her face.
"Promise?""
Renee swallowed.
"I promise we'll make sure you're safe.""
Maya approached with a small folded piece of paper.
"Malik?""
He looked up.
"I made you something.""
She handed him the paper.
Inside was a drawing of two children standing beneath a bright yellow sun.
Above them, in uneven handwriting, were the words:
*WE ARE BRAVER TOGETHER.*
Malik stared at it.
"That's me?""
Maya nodded.
"And that's me.""
He smiled for the first time that day.
"Thank you.""
Her father, Thomas, watched them quietly.
Then he turned toward Renee.
"My daughter has been telling me strange things about that classroom for months.""
Renee looked at him.
"What things?""
Thomas hesitated.
"She said Ms. Dalton made children pay money for classroom privileges. At first, I thought she meant fundraising.""
"Money?""
"Apparently, children who brought gifts were allowed to choose their seats or get extra computer time.""
Renee frowned.
"That's not normal.""
"No. It isn't.""
Thomas rubbed his forehead.
"I should have investigated sooner.""
Renee shook her head.
"We trusted the school. That's what parents are supposed to do.""
He nodded slowly.
"And that's exactly what they took advantage of.""
At 4:00 p.m., Daniel returned to the security office.
Linda was waiting beside the surveillance computer.
"I found something," she said.
Daniel pulled out a chair.
"What?""
"Ms. Dalton's classroom camera didn't just go dark this morning. Someone accessed the recording system last night.""
She clicked through the security logs.
A series of entries appeared.
11:42 p.m.
12:03 a.m.
12:17 a.m.
Daniel leaned closer.
"Who logged in?""
Linda pointed to the screen.
"Administrator account.""
"Principal Ellis?""
"That's what the system indicates.""
Daniel examined the timestamps.
"Can you recover what was deleted?""
"Some of it. The server keeps temporary backups.""
Linda opened another window.
A list of archived recordings appeared.
Classroom 12.
Previous dates.
Several files had been marked for deletion.
Daniel selected one from the previous week.
The footage loaded.
At first, the room appeared ordinary.
Children sat at their desks.
Ms. Dalton stood near the whiteboard.
Then the bell rang.
The children began packing their backpacks.
One little boy approached her desk.
"Ms. Dalton, can I go now?""
She looked at him.
"Did you finish your assignment?""
"Yes.""
"Then show me.""
The boy handed her his paper.
She glanced at it and shook her head.
"Pathetic. Sit down.""
The other children left.
The boy remained.
Daniel watched as Ms. Dalton pulled a chair toward the front of the room.
"Do you know why you're staying?""
The boy shook his head.
"Because your mother keeps sending me complaints. Perhaps if you learn some respect, she'll stop embarrassing herself.""
Daniel paused the recording.
"Who is that child?""
Linda checked the attendance records.
"His name is Ethan Parker.""
Daniel resumed the footage.
Ms. Dalton opened her desk drawer and removed a small envelope.
She placed it on the desk.
"Your mother gave me this last week.""
Ethan looked confused.
"She said it was for the field trip.""
"Exactly. And now you've ruined everything by misbehaving.""
The boy began crying.
Daniel stopped the video.
"Save that file. Preserve the original.""
Linda nodded.
Then she pointed to another recording.
"There's something else.""
The file was dated six months earlier.
When it opened, Daniel recognized Ms. Dalton immediately.
But the woman standing beside her was not Principal Ellis.
It was a district administrator.
A man named Robert Hargrove.
He was speaking quietly.
"Make sure the parents don't receive copies of these reports," he said.
Ms. Dalton nodded.
"And the camera?""
Hargrove looked directly toward it.
"We'll deal with that after the inspection.""
Daniel leaned closer to the monitor.
The administrator glanced toward the classroom door.
Then he said something that made Daniel sit completely still.
"One more complaint, Eleanor, and the whole arrangement falls apart.""
The recording ended.
At 5:12 p.m., Daniel called his supervisor.
"Sergeant, we have evidence of potential misconduct beyond the classroom.""
"What kind of misconduct?""
"Suppressed complaints, deleted surveillance recordings, possible financial arrangements involving school staff and administrators.""
The sergeant went silent.
"Are you certain?""
"I'm looking at the footage right now.""
"Don't circulate anything. Preserve the original files and contact the district's independent oversight office.""
Daniel looked at the screen again.
"Already doing it.""
Before ending the call, his supervisor added:
"Reed, be careful. If senior administrators are involved, this could get ugly.""
Daniel gave a humorless laugh.
"An eight-year-old was made to kneel for refusing to buy his teacher a present. I think it's already ugly.""
At 6:30 p.m., Daniel received another call.
This time, it was Susan Miller.
"Officer Reed, I found the original video.""
"Excellent. Can you bring it in tomorrow?""
"I need to tell you something first.""
"What?""
"The recording doesn't just show Olivia. It shows someone else entering the storage closet.""
"Who?""
Susan hesitated.
"I couldn't identify him at the time.""
"Do you recognize him now?""
"Yes.""
"Who is it?""
Her answer came quietly.
"Robert Hargrove. The same district administrator who came to the school this afternoon.""
Daniel looked at the clock.
It was already evening.
He stood up and reached for his jacket.
"Ms. Miller, don't go anywhere. I'm sending someone to meet you.""
"Officer?""
"Yes?""
Susan whispered:
"There's another child in that video. And I think he's still at Westbrook.""
Daniel froze.
"What's the child's name?""
"I don't know.""
"Can you describe him?""
Susan took a shaky breath.
"He's a little boy. Maybe seven years old. And before Hargrove entered the closet, Ms. Dalton said something I will never forget.""
"What?""
"She said, 'This one will be easier. His father works for us.''"
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
Because suddenly, he understood something.
May you like
Malik might not have been the first child.
And he might not have been the last.
