Chapter 8: The Little Girl Who Disappeared From the Records
Daniel reached Westbrook Elementary in eleven minutes.
Sergeant Collins followed close behind.
The school entrance was crowded with parents dropping off their children, but the atmosphere changed when Daniel walked through the doors.
Linda was waiting at reception.
Her face was pale.
"Officer, thank God.""
"What happened?""
She handed him a printed report.
"Maya's student profile was modified at 8:17 this morning.""
Daniel scanned the document.
Her attendance status had been changed.
*STUDENT WITHDRAWAL — PARENT REQUEST.*
Daniel looked up.
"Her father didn't request this.""
"I called him. He said he knew nothing about it.""
"Where is Maya now?""
"Her father picked her up after receiving my call.""
Daniel exhaled.
"Good.""
Then Linda showed him the second document.
It was an access report.
The withdrawal had been processed using a district administrator account.
The name attached was Robert Hargrove.
Collins swore under his breath.
"He's trying to make the children disappear from the records.""
Daniel looked toward the security office.
"Show me the hallway cameras.""
They hurried inside.
Linda opened the system.
Most of the recordings from the previous night were gone.
But one camera had continued recording.
Camera 6.
It covered the administrative corridor.
Daniel pressed play.
At 8:12 p.m., a man entered the hallway.
He wore a dark jacket and carried a laptop bag.
He approached the records office.
Then he used a keycard.
The door opened.
Linda leaned closer.
"That's not Hargrove.""
Daniel paused the image.
The man's face was partially visible.
Collins recognized him.
"Frank Holloway.""
Daniel turned.
"But Holloway was at his house yesterday.""
"Maybe someone else used his credentials.""
They resumed the footage.
Holloway entered the office.
He remained inside for approximately six minutes.
When he came out, he was carrying a folder.
Daniel froze the recording.
"Look at his hand.""
Linda zoomed in.
The folder had a label.
*BROOKS — WITNESS INFORMATION.*
Collins stared.
"He's got information about Maya.""
Daniel immediately called Holloway.
The phone rang.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
Then Linda spoke.
"Officer, there's another file.""
She opened the access history.
A message had been sent from the district system to an external email address.
Subject:
*WITNESS TRANSFER CONFIRMATION.*
Daniel read the message.
The child has been removed from the active roster. Her previous statement should no longer be associated with the current investigation.
He looked at Collins.
"Someone is trying to erase Maya's testimony.""
Collins nodded.
"Then we make sure they can't.""
At 10:15 a.m., Thomas Brooks arrived at the police station with Maya.
He looked furious.
"They changed my daughter's school records without my permission.""
Daniel stood.
"I know. We've preserved the access logs.""
Thomas placed his phone on the desk.
"And I received another message.""
Daniel read it.
*You should think about your daughter's future before making this worse.*
Thomas clenched his jaw.
"Whoever sent that knows where we live.""
"We're treating this as a potential intimidation attempt.""
Maya sat quietly beside her father.
Daniel pulled up a chair.
"Hey, Maya.""
She looked at him.
"Hi.""
"I need to ask you something. Did Ms. Dalton ever mention that other people were involved in what happened in the classroom?""
Maya nodded.
"She talked to Mr. Hargrove.""
"What did she say?""
"She said he was the reason nobody could make her stop.""
Daniel glanced at Collins.
Maya continued.
"One day, I was putting my lunchbox away. I heard them talking outside the classroom.""
"What did you hear?""
"Ms. Dalton said the children were starting to ask questions.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"And what did Mr. Hargrove say?""
Maya looked down at her hands.
"He said, 'Then make sure they understand what happens when they talk.''"
Thomas's expression hardened.
"That's enough. My daughter doesn't need to keep reliving this.""
Daniel nodded.
"You're right. We won't ask her to repeat anything unnecessarily.""
Maya suddenly reached into her backpack.
"I brought something.""
She placed a small notebook on the table.
Daniel opened it carefully.
Inside were drawings.
Some showed ordinary classroom activities.
Others showed Ms. Dalton standing over children.
One drawing showed a boy inside a dark rectangular room.
Another showed an adult man holding a folder.
Daniel turned several pages.
Then he stopped.
There was a drawing of Ms. Dalton sitting at her desk.
Beside her was a stack of envelopes.
Above the envelopes, Maya had written:
*MONEY FOR BEING GOOD.*
Daniel looked at her.
"Did you see these envelopes?""
Maya nodded.
"Sometimes she gave them to Mr. Hargrove.""
"Did you see what was inside?""
"Money.""
Thomas looked at his daughter.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Maya's eyes filled.
"Because she said you would get fired too.""
Thomas pulled her into his arms.
"Oh, sweetheart.""
He kissed her forehead.
"You never have to protect adults by keeping secrets about things that hurt children.""
Maya began crying.
Daniel quietly closed the notebook.
He had enough evidence to understand that the classroom incidents were only one part of a much larger operation.
But he still needed to establish where the money had gone.
At noon, investigators executed a lawful search of the district administrative offices.
They found financial spreadsheets, archived parent complaints, and several private email accounts.
One document stood out.
It was titled:
*SPECIAL FAMILY CONTRIBUTIONS — WESTBROOK.*
The spreadsheet contained dozens of entries.
Some parents had paid for classroom supplies.
Others had paid for special educational activities.
But several entries were marked differently.
*Complaint withdrawal.*
*Student transfer.*
*Parent cooperation.*
Daniel examined the dates.
One payment matched Michael Bennett's eighteen-thousand-dollar relocation agreement.
Another was linked to a family whose child had attended Ms. Dalton's class the previous year.
A third payment had been made by an unknown company.
The amount was $42,000.
The company was called Bright Futures Educational Consulting.
Daniel searched the business registration.
The registered owner was Margaret Ellis.
Collins stared at the screen.
"She owns a consulting company?""
"Apparently.""
"Does the district know?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not according to these records.""
An investigator entered the room carrying another folder.
"We found something else in Hargrove's office.""
She placed a photograph on the desk.
It showed a group of school administrators at a fundraising dinner.
Hargrove stood in the middle.
Beside him was Margaret Ellis.
And on the far right stood Eleanor Dalton.
Daniel recognized the date.
It was the previous Teacher Appreciation Day.
But something about the photograph bothered him.
He enlarged the image.
On the table in front of Dalton was a small wooden box.
The same kind of box visible in the classroom footage.
Daniel pointed.
"What's that?""
The investigator looked closer.
"I don't know.""
Daniel examined the photograph's timestamp.
Then he noticed the handwritten label beneath the box.
*STUDENT CONTRIBUTIONS.*
His stomach tightened.
"Get the original photograph. Find out who organized that event.""
At 2:30 p.m., Robert Hargrove held a press conference outside the district administration building.
He stood behind a podium, surrounded by school officials.
"We are deeply concerned about recent allegations," he began.
"However, we must remember that accusations are not proof.""
A reporter raised her hand.
"Mr. Hargrove, did you authorize payments to parents who withdrew complaints against teachers?""
Hargrove smiled.
"Absolutely not. Those payments were legitimate relocation and support arrangements.""
Another reporter spoke.
"Why was a student removed from Westbrook's active roster without her father's permission?""
Hargrove's smile disappeared.
"I have no knowledge of that matter.""
"Did you authorize the deletion of security footage?""
"Certainly not.""
"Have you spoken to Ms. Dalton?""
Hargrove adjusted his tie.
"I have no comment on individual personnel matters.""
At the police station, Daniel watched the broadcast.
Collins stood beside him.
"He's lying.""
Daniel nodded.
Then his phone rang.
An investigator had called.
"Reed, we've found the person who accessed Maya's records.""
"Who?""
"Frank Holloway.""
"Where is he?""
"Not at home.""
Daniel stood.
"Any idea where he went?""
The investigator paused.
"His vehicle was spotted near the old Westbrook storage building.""
Daniel looked at the screen.
"Why would he go there?""
"We don't know.""
Then the investigator added:
"But he wasn't alone.""
"Who was with him?""
The answer came quietly.
"Michael Bennett.""
Daniel's expression changed.
The father who had finally agreed to cooperate was now with the former district liaison who had helped conceal the abuse.
And neither man was answering his phone.
At 3:05 p.m., Daniel and Collins arrived at the old storage building.
The front door was unlocked.
Inside, dust covered the floor.
A metal filing cabinet stood against the wall.
Daniel moved carefully through the narrow corridor.
"Mr. Bennett?""
No answer.
Then they heard a noise.
A chair scraping.
Daniel turned toward the back room.
Michael Bennett sat at a table.
Frank Holloway stood beside him.
Between them was an open cardboard box filled with old documents.
Daniel raised his voice.
"Step away from the box.""
Michael immediately stood.
"Officer, wait.""
Holloway raised both hands.
"I can explain.""
Daniel looked at the papers.
"What are you doing here?""
Michael swallowed.
"He called me. He said he had something that could help Noah.""
Daniel stared at Holloway.
"Is that true?""
Holloway nodded.
"There's a recording. Something Hargrove didn't know I kept.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Where is it?""
Holloway pointed toward the box.
But before Daniel could reach it, Michael spoke.
"There's a problem.""
"What problem?""
Michael looked at Daniel.
"The recording isn't just about Noah.""
He removed a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph of a child standing beside Ms. Dalton.
Daniel recognized the child immediately.
It was Malik Carter.
But the photograph was dated four years earlier.
Daniel stared at it.
"How is that possible?""
Michael's face went pale.
"Because Malik isn't the first Carter child this school has targeted.""
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
May you like
Then Michael whispered:
"His older brother was here before him.""
