Chapter 12: The Grandfather's Secret
Jordan sat motionless.
The video had ended, but Marcus Carter's final words seemed to remain in the room.
It was your own grandfather.
Daniel pulled his chair closer.
"Jordan, do you know your grandfather's name?""
The boy nodded slowly.
"William Carter.""
"Did you ever meet him?""
"No. Mom said he died before I was born.""
"Do you know what he did for work?""
Jordan shook his head.
Daniel looked toward Karen Mitchell.
"Can you stay with Jordan for a moment?""
She nodded.
Daniel stepped outside and called Renee.
She answered immediately.
"Officer, is Jordan okay?""
"He's safe. But we need to ask you about your former father-in-law.""
There was a long pause.
"William?""
"Yes.""
"What about him?""
"Did he ever work for Westbrook Elementary or the school district?""
Renee sounded confused.
"No. He was a businessman. He owned several properties.""
"Did he have any connection to Robert Hargrove?""
"I don't know.""
"Mrs. Carter, Marcus left a recording suggesting William Carter may have been involved in payments connected to the school.""
Renee stopped speaking.
Then she whispered:
"That can't be right.""
"Why?""
"William hated Robert Hargrove.""
Daniel frowned.
"How do you know?""
"Because they had a lawsuit.""
Daniel immediately wrote it down.
"What kind of lawsuit?""
"Marcus told me they argued over a construction contract. William owned a company that renovated school buildings. Hargrove accused him of misusing district funds.""
"When did this happen?""
"Before Marcus and I got married.""
Daniel glanced toward Collins.
"Do you know where the business records are?""
Renee hesitated.
"William left everything to his daughter.""
"Who is that?""
"His only daughter. My former sister-in-law, Vanessa.""
Daniel wrote down the name.
"Can you contact her?""
"I haven't spoken to her in years.""
"Please try.""
Before ending the call, Renee added:
"Officer, there's something else you should know.""
"What?""
"William gave Marcus a key shortly before he died. Marcus kept it in his wallet for years.""
Daniel straightened.
"What kind of key?""
"I don't know. Marcus said it was connected to something important.""
Daniel looked toward the evidence room.
"Do you know where the wallet is?""
Renee hesitated.
"Jordan has it.""
At 11:30 a.m., Daniel met Jordan again.
"Your mother mentioned a key.""
Jordan nodded.
"Dad kept it in his wallet.""
"Do you have the wallet?""
The boy reached into his backpack.
He removed an old brown leather wallet.
The edges were cracked.
A photograph of Marcus and Jordan had been tucked inside.
Jordan opened a small pocket and removed a brass key.
Daniel examined it.
There was a number engraved on the handle.
*B-17.*
"Do you know what it opens?""
Jordan shook his head.
"Dad told me not to lose it.""
Daniel turned the key over.
A small symbol had been stamped into the metal.
It was the same symbol printed on the financial documents recovered from the underground records room.
A company logo.
Bright Futures Educational Consulting.
Daniel immediately called the investigator.
"We need the registered business address for Bright Futures.""
At 1:00 p.m., the investigators arrived at a commercial building downtown.
Bright Futures Educational Consulting occupied the second floor.
The office appeared ordinary.
A reception desk.
A waiting room.
Several framed photographs of children participating in educational activities.
But the company had no active staff listed.
Its registration showed Margaret Ellis as the owner.
Daniel presented the appropriate search authorization.
A receptionist unlocked the door.
"Ms. Ellis isn't here.""
"We're not looking for her.""
The investigators searched the office.
They found financial statements, donation records, and several filing cabinets.
Behind a locked storage closet was a metal safe.
The lock had a small label.
*B-17.*
Daniel looked at the key.
"Looks like we found it.""
The key turned.
Inside were three binders, a laptop, and several envelopes.
The first binder contained financial transactions.
The second contained contracts.
The third contained photographs.
Daniel opened the first binder.
Hundreds of payments were listed.
Several were routed through Bright Futures.
Others were transferred to companies with different names.
One company had received repeated payments from the school district.
*Carter Property Holdings.*
Daniel frowned.
"That's William Carter's company.""
Collins checked the business registration.
"It was dissolved twelve years ago.""
"Then why was it receiving payments last year?""
An investigator opened the laptop.
"It appears the account was still active.""
"Who controlled it?""
She examined the login information.
"Robert Hargrove.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Can you access the transaction history?""
"Working on it.""
A few minutes later, a spreadsheet appeared.
The records showed payments from the district to Carter Property Holdings.
The amounts varied.
$5,000.
$12,000.
$25,000.
And one transfer of $75,000.
The date matched the first complaint involving Ms. Dalton.
Daniel examined the recipient information.
The account holder was not William Carter.
It was Vanessa Carter.
Renee's former sister-in-law.
Daniel immediately called her.
At 2:20 p.m., Vanessa Carter arrived at the district attorney's office.
She was in her early forties, dressed in a black business suit, and visibly irritated.
"I don't understand why I'm here.""
Daniel placed a copy of the financial statement on the table.
"Do you recognize this account?""
Vanessa looked down.
Her expression changed.
"Where did you get that?""
"From a safe belonging to Bright Futures Educational Consulting.""
She pushed the document away.
"I have nothing to do with that company.""
"Your name appears as the recipient of several payments.""
"Those were legitimate transfers.""
"From whom?""
"Family investments.""
"Which family investments?""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Why am I being questioned about my father's company?""
Daniel opened another folder.
"Because the payments appear connected to complaints involving children at Westbrook Elementary.""
Vanessa looked up sharply.
"What children?""
"Jordan Carter. Noah Bennett. Olivia Grant. Malik Carter.""
She swallowed.
Then she stood.
"This is ridiculous. I want a lawyer.""
Daniel nodded.
"That's your right.""
She reached for her purse.
But before leaving, she turned back.
"One thing, Officer.""
"Yes?""
"My father never approved any of this.""
Daniel studied her face.
"Then why did you receive the money?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she said something unexpected.
"Because Robert Hargrove told me it was compensation for a construction contract my father never got paid for.""
"Did you know where the money came from?""
"No.""
"Did you know it was connected to student complaints?""
Vanessa looked down.
"I didn't know about the children.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"But you knew about the payments.""
She nodded.
"I thought it was a debt settlement.""
"Then why did you never tell anyone?""
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"Because Hargrove told me my father had stolen from the district before he died. He said if I challenged him, he would release documents proving my father was a criminal.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Did your father steal anything?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No.""
Then she reached into her purse and removed an old envelope.
"I have something.""
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a letter written by William Carter.
Vanessa, if Robert ever contacts you about the school accounts, do not sign anything. The money is not what it appears to be. He has been using my company's name to hide payments I never authorized.
Daniel looked up.
"Why didn't you bring this forward sooner?""
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
"Because I was afraid he'd destroy what was left of my father's reputation.""
She handed him another document.
It was a handwritten list.
Several names appeared.
At the bottom was one that Daniel recognized.
*Eleanor Dalton.*
Beside her name was a note.
She has the original classroom records. If anything happens to me, find the woman who worked in the library.
Daniel frowned.
"The woman who worked in the library?""
Vanessa nodded.
"My father told me she was the only person who knew the whole story.""
"Do you know her name?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"Grace Thompson.""
At 4:30 p.m., Daniel located Grace Thompson.
She was seventy-one years old and had retired from Westbrook eight years earlier.
When he arrived at her home, she opened the door only a few inches.
"Yes?""
"Ms. Thompson? I'm Officer Reed. I'm investigating misconduct at Westbrook Elementary.""
The moment she heard the school's name, she closed her eyes.
"I wondered when this day would come.""
Daniel gently raised his hand.
"Can we talk?""
Grace looked over her shoulder.
Then she opened the door.
Her living room was filled with books and old photographs.
On one shelf sat a framed picture of the Westbrook staff from fifteen years earlier.
Daniel noticed a young Margaret Ellis standing beside a much younger Robert Hargrove.
Grace followed his gaze.
"Those two destroyed that school.""
"Did you know about Ms. Dalton?""
Grace nodded.
"I knew she was hurting children. I also knew the administration was covering it up.""
"Why didn't you report it?""
"I did.""
"To whom?""
"The superintendent. The school board. Even the police.""
Daniel frowned.
"What happened?""
Grace gave a bitter smile.
"Every report disappeared.""
She walked toward a cabinet and removed a small metal box.
Inside were old photographs, handwritten letters, and several VHS tapes.
"My husband installed the original security system at Westbrook," she explained.
"Before the district replaced it, he made backup recordings.""
Daniel looked at the tapes.
"Do they show the classrooms?""
"Some of them.""
Grace picked up one cassette.
"This one shows the day William Carter confronted Hargrove.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Can we watch it?""
Grace nodded.
She inserted the tape into an old player.
The footage began.
William Carter stood in the school library, arguing with Hargrove.
"You promised the money would go toward the children," William said.
Hargrove folded his arms.
"And it did.""
"Then why are teachers asking parents for additional payments?""
Hargrove stepped closer.
"Because some families need incentives to cooperate.""
William shook his head.
"They're children, Robert.""
Hargrove looked toward the camera.
Then he said:
"Children are easy to control when their parents are afraid.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
The recording continued.
William placed a folder on the table.
"I've copied everything. If you don't stop, I'm going to the authorities.""
Hargrove laughed.
"Then you'll lose everything.""
William turned to leave.
But before the recording ended, another person entered the room.
A woman.
She carried a school bag and wore a familiar staff badge.
Grace paused the tape.
Daniel stared at the image.
He recognized the woman.
It was Eleanor Dalton.
But the date on the recording was fifteen years earlier.
She had been involved long before Malik was born.
Grace looked at Daniel.
"That's why you need to understand something.""
"What?""
"Ms. Dalton wasn't simply protecting Hargrove.""
Grace reached into the metal box and removed a photograph.
It showed a much younger Eleanor Dalton standing beside a group of children.
On the back was a handwritten sentence.
*The first child was her own son.*
Daniel looked up.
"Her son?""
Grace nodded.
"And that little boy was the reason she became involved with Hargrove in the first place.""
Daniel stared at the photograph.
May you like
Then Grace spoke the final words that changed the direction of the entire investigation.
"Her son was the first child to disappear from Westbrook's records.""
