Chapter 13: The Child Who Disappeared
Daniel stared at the photograph in Grace Thompson's hands.
Eleanor Dalton looked barely thirty. Her hair was shorter, her expression softer, and one arm rested protectively around a little boy wearing a Westbrook Elementary uniform.
On the back, someone had written:
*Eleanor and Daniel — First Day at Westbrook.*
Daniel read the name twice.
"Her son was named Daniel?""
Grace nodded.
"Daniel Dalton. He was seven years old when he disappeared from the school's records.""
"Disappeared how?""
"That's what nobody could explain.""
Grace placed the photograph on the table.
"Eleanor was a single mother. She worked at Westbrook as an assistant teacher. Her son attended the school. One afternoon, he was sent to the old administration building because he supposedly needed to collect something from the office.""
"Who sent him?""
"Robert Hargrove.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Was Hargrove working there at the time?""
"He was the district's operations director. He had access to everything.""
"What happened to the boy?""
Grace looked down.
"He never came home that afternoon.""
Daniel felt a chill.
"Was he reported missing?""
"Yes. Eleanor called the police. The school claimed Daniel had been picked up by his father.""
"Did he have a father?""
"His father had died two years earlier.""
Daniel stared at her.
"So the school fabricated a pickup record?""
Grace nodded.
"They said Eleanor was confused. They told investigators she had authorized a relative to collect him. But there was no relative.
No signature. No witness.""
"Did they investigate?""
"Not properly. A week later, Eleanor withdrew her complaint. She said she'd received information that Daniel was safe.""
"Did she?""
Grace shook her head.
"She was terrified. Hargrove told her he could make sure she never saw her son again if she continued asking questions.""
Daniel sat back.
"Why would she work with the same man who took her child?""
Grace's eyes filled.
"Because he promised to bring him back.""
Silence settled over the room.
Daniel looked at the old photograph again.
"Did she ever find him?""
Grace slowly opened another folder.
Inside were letters written in different years.
Some were addressed to Hargrove.
Others were addressed to an unknown person.
One letter contained a single sentence:
You said Daniel would be returned when I stopped asking questions. I have kept my promise. Now keep yours.
Daniel examined the date.
It was written twelve years earlier.
"She was cooperating with him because she believed he knew where her son was.""
Grace nodded.
"She began following his instructions. She stopped reporting complaints. She helped him control the school. Every time another child was hurt, she told herself she was getting closer to finding Daniel.""
Daniel looked at her.
"That doesn't excuse what she did.""
"No," Grace said quietly.
"It doesn't.""
She placed another photograph on the table.
This one showed a small boy standing outside a residential building.
The photograph was old, but the boy's face was visible.
Daniel recognized him immediately.
Jordan Carter.
He looked about five years younger.
Beside him stood an older woman Daniel didn't recognize.
On the back was another handwritten note:
*The boy remembers the room. Keep him away from the mother.*
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
"Where did you get this?""
"William Carter gave it to me before he died.""
"Why?""
"He believed Hargrove was using the disappearance of Eleanor's son to manipulate her. He also believed the same people were hiding another child.""
"Jordan?""
Grace nodded.
"Marcus Carter told William that his son had seen something inside the old administration building. Something connected to Daniel Dalton.""
Daniel stood.
"What's inside that room?""
Grace reached for the last folder.
"I don't know. But William believed the boy was still alive.""
At the district attorney's office, Daniel placed the photograph in front of Collins.
Collins studied it.
"You're telling me Dalton's own son disappeared from Westbrook?""
"According to Grace, yes.""
"And Hargrove used that to control her?""
"That's what the letters suggest.""
Collins shook his head.
"Then we need to find Daniel Dalton.""
Daniel contacted the missing-persons unit.
The old case file was located within an hour.
The original report stated that Daniel Dalton had been collected from school by an authorized guardian.
But the guardian's name was blank.
The signature field contained a handwritten mark.
A second document, added three days later, claimed Eleanor had withdrawn her missing-child complaint voluntarily.
There was no recorded interview.
No proof of contact.
No confirmation that the child had been found.
Daniel turned to Collins.
"This was never resolved.""
"Someone closed it anyway.""
The investigator entered.
"We found something else. The residential facility where Jordan was placed has another connection to the district.""
Daniel looked up.
"What connection?""
"The facility's director previously worked for a nonprofit funded by Bright Futures Educational Consulting.""
Collins frowned.
"Patricia Lowell?""
"Yes. She received two payments from the company. One was made shortly before Jordan's placement.""
Daniel stood.
"Get her statement.""
The investigator continued.
"There's also an old visitor log. Eleanor Dalton visited Jordan three times in the six months before his placement.""
Daniel remembered the photograph.
"She wasn't just visiting him.""
"No. The log shows she signed in under a different name.""
"What name?""
The investigator handed him the record.
*E. Davis.*
Daniel looked at Collins.
"She was hiding her identity.""
That evening, Daniel and Karen Mitchell met with Eleanor Dalton in a secure interview room.
She looked older than she had in the school photographs.
Her hands trembled as Daniel placed the picture of her son on the table.
"Do you recognize him?""
Eleanor stared at the photograph.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then her lips moved.
"Daniel.""
"Is this your son?""
She nodded.
"Where is he?""
"I don't know.""
"Do you know if he's alive?""
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"I hope so.""
Daniel placed the photograph of Jordan beside it.
"Why were you visiting Jordan Carter?""
Her expression changed.
"Where did you get that?""
"That's not an answer.""
Eleanor looked toward Karen.
"I want a lawyer.""
"That's your right," Daniel said.
"But before we stop, I need to ask one question.""
She looked at him.
"Did you know Jordan was being threatened?""
Eleanor's eyes filled.
"I tried to protect him.""
"By visiting him under a false name?""
"Robert said he would be safe.""
"Robert Hargrove?""
She nodded.
Daniel leaned forward.
"Did you know Malik Carter was being monitored?""
Eleanor began crying.
"I didn't want another child to disappear.""
"Then why did you hurt him?""
She covered her mouth.
"I was told to make him afraid.""
"By whom?""
Eleanor looked at the photograph of her son.
Then she whispered:
"By the person who had been keeping Daniel alive.""
Daniel went still.
"Who?""
Eleanor looked directly at him.
"Margaret Ellis.""
Before the interview could continue, Daniel's phone rang.
It was Collins.
"Reed, we found her.""
"Found who?""
"Margaret Ellis.""
"Where?""
"At an abandoned property registered to Bright Futures.""
Daniel stood.
"Is she alone?""
"No. Someone else is with her.""
"Who?""
Collins paused.
Then he said:
"Daniel Dalton.""
Daniel looked through the glass at Eleanor.
She had gone completely pale.
"Her son?""
"Yes. He's alive.""
Daniel turned toward the interview room.
Eleanor was already standing.
She whispered something Daniel could barely hear.
"She found him.""
May you like
Then she began to scream.
"Margaret promised she'd never let him go!""
