Chapter 2: The Boy Who Was Afraid to Go Home

Principal Margaret Ellis arrived seven minutes later.

She entered Classroom 12 carrying a leather folder, her expression carefully controlled.

"What exactly is going on here?"" she asked.

Daniel stood beside Malik.

"Ms. Dalton unplugged the classroom camera. I observed her standing over this child with a wooden ruler. I've secured the footage.""

Principal Ellis looked at the teacher.

"Is that true, Eleanor?""

Ms. Dalton exhaled sharply.

"I disconnected it because the cable was sparking. I was going to submit a maintenance request.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Interesting. Because the maintenance system shows no report.""

"Perhaps I hadn't submitted it yet.""

"And why was Malik kneeling?""

"He was being disruptive.""

"How?""

Ms. Dalton hesitated.

"He refused to show appreciation for his teacher.""

Principal Ellis blinked.

"What?""

"He came to school empty-handed on Teacher Appreciation Day. I was explaining the importance of gratitude.""

Daniel slowly turned toward her.

"By making an eight-year-old kneel?""

Ms. Dalton lifted her chin.

"I use firm classroom management. Some parents appreciate discipline.""

"Did you strike him with that ruler?""

"No.""

Maya's chair scraped against the floor.

"Yes, you did!""

Principal Ellis turned.

"Maya, please.""

"No!"" Maya's voice shook.

"I saw it. She hit Malik. She did it before too.""

Ms. Dalton pointed at her.

"That is an outrageous accusation.""

Maya began crying.

"You're always telling us nobody will believe us!""

The room fell silent.

Daniel gently motioned for Maya to come closer.

"You're not in trouble. I promise.""

Maya stood and walked toward him.

Her eyes remained fixed on Ms. Dalton.

"She makes Malik stay after everyone leaves," Maya whispered.

"How often?""

"I don't know. Sometimes she says he has to clean the classroom.""

Ms. Dalton interrupted.

"Because he frequently leaves his work unfinished.""

Maya shook her head.

"That's not true.""

Daniel asked, "What happens when he stays?""

Maya hesitated.

"She makes him stand facing the wall. Sometimes she takes his lunch away.""

Malik's head dropped.

Principal Ellis closed her folder.

"Officer, perhaps we should move this discussion to my office.""

"No," Daniel replied.

"I want the children separated from Ms. Dalton first.""

He called for another staff member to supervise the classroom while he arranged for Malik and Maya to speak with a designated child-protection professional.

Ms. Dalton's expression hardened.

"This is becoming ridiculous. You're treating me like a criminal.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Then you'll have no problem cooperating with the investigation.""

At 10:45 a.m., Renee Carter received a phone call.

She was working the morning shift at a small grocery store when her phone vibrated in her apron pocket.

"Hello?""

"Mrs. Carter? This is Officer Daniel Reed from Westbrook Elementary.""

Her heart immediately began racing.

"Is Malik okay?""

"He's physically safe right now. I need you to come to the school.""

"Did something happen?""

There was a pause.

"Yes, ma'am. And I think it's important that we speak in person.""

Renee dropped the price scanner.

Her manager looked up.

"Renee?""

"I need to go. It's my son.""

She grabbed her coat and ran outside.

When Renee arrived, Daniel was waiting near the front entrance.

"Where is my baby?"" she demanded.

"He's in the counseling office.""

She pushed past him.

Malik was sitting on a small sofa with a blanket around his shoulders.

The moment he saw his mother, he ran.

"Mommy!""

Renee dropped to her knees and wrapped both arms around him.

"Oh, sweetheart. What happened?""

Malik buried his face against her shoulder.

"I'm sorry, Mommy.""

Renee pulled back.

"Why are you apologizing?""

"I didn't bring her a present.""

Renee looked confused.

"What present?""

"Ms. Dalton's present.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Mrs. Carter, we need to explain what we witnessed.""

He described the disconnected camera, the ruler, and Malik's position on the floor.

Renee's face changed with every sentence.

When Daniel mentioned the bruises, she gently rolled up her son's sleeve.

There were several marks on his forearm.

Some appeared older.

One was darker and more recent.

She covered her mouth.

"Oh my God.""

Malik began shaking.

"Mommy, please don't be mad.""

Renee pulled him close again.

"Baby, I am not mad at you.""

"But I didn't tell you.""

"Tell me what?""

He looked toward Daniel.

Then back at his mother.

"She said you would lose your job if I told.""

Renee went completely still.

"Who said that?""

"Ms. Dalton.""

Renee closed her eyes.

For weeks, she had noticed Malik waking up with nightmares.

He had stopped asking for his favorite cereal before school.

He sometimes complained about stomachaches on Sunday nights.

She had blamed the adjustment to second grade.

Now every little detail seemed to fall into place.

"Did she hurt you before today?"" Renee whispered.

Malik nodded.

"How many times?""

"I don't know.""

"Sweetheart, you can tell me.""

He looked down at his shoes.

"She says I'm stupid when I make mistakes. Sometimes she grabs my arm. Yesterday she pushed my books off the desk and made me pick them up while everybody watched.""

Renee's eyes filled with tears.

Daniel pulled a chair closer.

"Mrs. Carter, I want you to understand something. Your son did the right thing by telling us. We are documenting everything and contacting the appropriate child-protection authorities.""

Renee nodded.

Then she looked toward the door.

"Where is that woman?""

"She's in the principal's office.""

"I want to see her.""

Daniel gently shook his head.

"Not yet. Let us handle this properly.""

Renee wiped her cheeks.

"Officer, I came here three times. Three times I told them something was wrong.""

Daniel looked down.

"I know.""

"They told me he was sensitive. They told me he needed to adjust. They told me children sometimes make things up.""

Her voice broke.

"And now you're telling me she was doing this to him?""

Daniel had no answer that could make the situation better.

At noon, Maya's father, Thomas Brooks, arrived.

He was a construction supervisor who had left a job site as soon as the school called.

When he entered the counseling office, Maya ran straight into his arms.

"Daddy!""

Thomas lifted her.

"Hey, princess. What's wrong?""

Maya whispered something into his ear.

His face hardened.

He looked at Daniel.

"My daughter says this teacher has been hurting another child.""

"That's part of what we're investigating.""

Thomas glanced at Renee.

"Is your son Malik?""

Renee nodded.

Thomas gently lowered Maya.

"Sweetheart, did you see what happened?""

Maya nodded.

"She unplugged the camera.""

Thomas looked at Daniel.

"Then the camera should have everything.""

Daniel hesitated.

"There's something else you need to know.""

He opened a folder containing a printed image from the security recording.

It showed Ms. Dalton standing beside Malik's desk.

Her hand was raised.

The ruler was clearly visible.

But there was another person in the background.

Someone standing just outside the classroom door.

Daniel pointed at the image.

"At the moment this happened, someone was watching from the hallway.""

Renee leaned closer.

"Who?""

Daniel turned the paper around.

The photograph showed Principal Margaret Ellis.

And in her hand was a small envelope.

Maya stared at the image.

Then she whispered:

"That's the envelope Ms. Dalton gave her yesterday.""

Thomas frowned.

"What envelope?""

Maya looked at her father.

"She said it was money for making sure nobody complained.""

Nobody spoke.

Daniel picked up his radio.

"Dispatch, I need the principal's office secured. Nobody leaves the building until we establish what's happening.""

But when another officer reached the principal's office, the door was open.

The leather folder was still on the desk.

The principal's purse was gone.

And so was Margaret Ellis.
