Chapter 10: The Brother Behind The Lies
The sound of Ethan’s voice echoed through the house.
Calm.
Confident.
Almost amused.
That was the part that terrified me the most.
A person who knew they had control didn’t need to scream.
They didn’t need to threaten.
They simply waited.
My father stood at the bottom of the stairs.
“Show yourself.””
A low laugh came from the darkness.
“You always did love dramatic entrances.””
Brooke closed her eyes.
I saw something I had never seen from her before.
Not fear of being exposed.
Fear of him.
“Ethan,” she whispered.
A shadow moved near the doorway.
Then a man stepped into the faint light coming from outside.
He looked completely ordinary.
That was what made him dangerous.
No rage.
No panic.
No signs of a monster.
Just a man wearing an expensive suit with a calm smile.
He looked around the room.
At my father.
At my mother.
At Brooke.
Then his eyes landed on me.
“So this is the man everyone destroyed themselves over.””
I stepped forward.
“You planned everything?””
He smiled.
“That depends on what you mean by everything.””
My hands tightened.
“Grace disappearing.””
He shrugged.
“Your mother handled that.””
My mother looked at him.
“You told me you were helping.””
“I was.””
Her face changed.
“No.””
Ethan tilted his head.
“You really believed you were in charge?””
The room became silent.
I looked at my mother.
She looked broken.
Not because she was innocent.
Because she realized she had been used too.
“You manipulated me,” she whispered.
Ethan smiled.
“You were easy to manipulate.””
Those words hurt her.
But they also revealed something important.
Everyone in that room had been a piece on his board.
My father moved closer.
“You threatened Grace.””
Ethan looked at him.
“And you disappeared.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“You tried to destroy my son’s life.””
Ethan laughed.
“Your son’s life was already built on lies.””
I stepped forward.
“Why?””
He looked at me.
Finally.
The question I had been carrying all day.
Why?
Why Grace?
Why my daughter?
Why my family?
Ethan walked slowly into the room.
“Because you had something I wanted.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He smiled.
“Everything.””
The answer was so simple that it made me angry.
“You destroyed people because you wanted my life?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I destroyed people because your family believed they deserved everything.””
My father stared at him.
“You’re blaming us for your greed.””
Ethan’s smile disappeared.
“You don’t know anything about me.””
“Then explain.””
For the first time, Ethan’s calm expression cracked.
“My father built this family empire.””
He looked at my mother.
“My father sacrificed everything.””
Then he looked at me.
“And who inherited it?””
Nobody spoke.
I understood.
“This is about my grandfather.””
Ethan nodded.
“Your grandfather chose you.””
I felt cold.
“He was my son’s grandfather too.””
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“Exactly.””
The bitterness in his voice filled the room.
“You were always the golden child.””
I shook my head.
“I barely knew you.””
“That was the point.””
He stepped closer.
“You never had to fight for anything.””
I almost laughed.
“You think I had an easy life?””
Ethan looked at me.
“You had something I never had.””
“What?””
“A choice.””
The answer surprised me.
For a second, I saw something underneath his anger.
A lifetime of resentment.
Then it disappeared.
“And I decided to take that choice away from you.””
My father moved.
Fast.
But Ethan stepped back.
Two men appeared behind him.
Security.
Not ours.
His.
My stomach dropped.
He had planned every detail.
“Don’t,” Ethan said.
My father stopped.
Ethan looked at Grace.
“You should have stayed gone.””
Grace held Ava tighter.
“You ruined my life.””
Ethan shrugged.
“You survived.””
The coldness of those words made my blood boil.
“You threatened a pregnant woman.””
“I convinced her to leave.””
“You scared her.””
“I gave her a reason.””
I stepped toward him.
“You kept me from my daughter.””
His eyes moved to Ava.
“And now you know she exists.””
I hated how easily he said it.
Like he was talking about paperwork.
Not a child.
My daughter.
Ethan turned back to Brooke.
“You disappointed me.””
Brooke looked at him.
“I’m done.””
Everyone looked at her.
Ethan smiled.
“No, you’re not.””
Her face went pale.
“I won’t do this anymore.””
He laughed.
“You think you can walk away?””
Brooke’s hands shook.
“I helped you because you threatened me.””
“And you helped me because you wanted the same things.””
“That’s not true.””
Ethan looked at me.
“She wanted your money.””
Brooke looked devastated.
I didn’t know if it was because he exposed her.
Or because he was right.
Ethan walked toward the table.
He picked up the family plan folder.
“You all keep talking about betrayal.””
He placed it down.
“But none of you understand the real betrayal.””
He looked at me.
“Your grandfather never intended to give you control of everything.””
I froze.
“What?””
My father looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
Ethan smiled.
“He left a condition.””
My heart started racing.
“What condition?””
He pulled out a document.
“You were supposed to inherit everything only if you built a stable family.””
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
“That’s impossible.””
“It’s true.””
My mother looked horrified.
Ethan continued.
“The marriage.””
He looked at Brooke.
“The child.””
He looked at Grace.
“Everything mattered.””
My mind struggled to process it.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“And you used that.””
“Yes.””
Ethan smiled.
“Because if you never married Brooke, the inheritance would be delayed.””
My father looked at me.
“Your grandfather wanted you to find happiness.””
Ethan interrupted.
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“Your grandfather wanted proof you could protect a family.””
His eyes moved toward Grace.
“And I wanted to prove you couldn’t.””
The lights suddenly flickered.
Then a loud sound came from outside.
Everyone turned.
A car door slammed.
Ethan looked toward the window.
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Someone unexpected had arrived.
Ethan whispered:
“That wasn’t supposed to happen.””
My father looked outside.
Then froze.
“Who is that?””
I moved toward the window.
And saw a woman stepping out of the car.
A woman I recognized.
Someone who shouldn’t have been involved.
May you like
Someone who had been missing from this entire nightmare.
My grandfather’s attorney.
