Chapter 2: The Secret Inside The Envelope
I had spent the last year believing Brooke was the safest person in my life.
That was the cruelest part.
The person I trusted most was now the person I couldn’t understand.
I held the protection request in my hand while the entire church watched me.
Brooke stared at me.
Not like someone who was hurt.
Like someone who was losing control.
“You don’t know what you’re reading,” she said.
Her voice was softer now.
Almost gentle.
But I knew Brooke.
I knew every expression on her face.
And I had never seen that look before.
Panic.
“Explain it,” I said.
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Grace slowly pushed herself up.
Ava stayed beside her, gripping her mother’s dress.
“I tried to tell you,” Grace whispered.
I looked at her.
My mind was drowning in questions.
Where had she been?
Why did she disappear?
Why was she pregnant?
Why did she have documents with my name?
And why was Brooke terrified?
“Grace,” I said quietly, “tell me everything.””
Before she could answer, Brooke stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She seemed to realize what she had done.
Her expression softened.
“I mean… she’s not stable.””
Grace flinched.
I noticed.
A small reaction.
But enough.
Someone had said those words to her before.
Many times.
I turned back to Grace.
“Did Brooke hurt you?””
Grace looked down.
That was the answer.
My heart dropped.
The woman beside me started shaking.
“No,” Brooke said quickly.
“Absolutely not.””
But her reaction came too fast.
Too defensive.
A man I trusted once told me something important:
The truth doesn’t usually need to fight that hard.
Lies do.
I helped Grace sit on a nearby chair.
The priest quietly stepped away.
My wedding guests didn’t know whether to leave or stay.
Some looked uncomfortable.
Some looked shocked.
Others watched Brooke like they were seeing a completely different person.
Grace held Ava close.
“I didn’t want to come here,” she whispered.
“Then why did you?””
She looked at Brooke.
And fear crossed her face.
“Because I ran out of options.””
Those words hit harder than anything else.
Ran.
Out.
Of.
Options.
“What happened?””
Grace looked at her daughter.
Then at me.
“After I left town, I found out I was pregnant.””
I swallowed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because someone convinced me you wouldn’t believe me.””
I felt cold.
“Who?””
Grace didn’t answer.
She didn’t have to.
Her eyes moved toward Brooke.
The church erupted with whispers.
Brooke shook her head.
“No. She’s twisting everything.””
But Grace reached into the envelope and pulled out another document.
“This is why I disappeared.””
She handed it to me.
I looked down.
It was a report.
A record of messages.
Threats.
Warnings.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“Who sent these?””
Grace looked at Brooke.
“She did.””
The silence afterward felt heavier than any scream.
Brooke laughed.
A strange, nervous laugh.
“You’re believing a stranger over your future wife?””
I looked at her.
“No.””
Her face relaxed slightly.
Then I continued.
“I’m believing the evidence.””
That changed everything.
Brooke’s expression hardened.
“You have no idea what she’s trying to do.””
“Then tell me.””
“I can explain.””
“Explain now.””
She looked around.
At the guests.
At the cameras recording the ceremony.
At her family sitting in the front row.
Then she lowered her voice.
“We need to talk privately.””
I almost laughed.
Privately.
After she tried to stop me from seeing documents that could change my entire life?
“No.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You’re embarrassing me.””
I stared at her.
The irony almost hurt.
Because ten minutes earlier, she was the woman I was supposed to promise forever to.
Now she was worried about embarrassment.
Not Grace.
Not Ava.
Not the truth.
Only herself.
Then Grace suddenly grabbed my hand.
Her voice trembled.
“There’s one more thing you need to know.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She reached into the envelope.
Her hand shook as she pulled out a small photograph.
She placed it in my palm.
I looked down.
And my blood went cold.
It was a picture of Brooke.
But not the Brooke I knew.
This picture was taken months ago.
Standing beside someone I recognized.
Someone who had no reason to be connected to my wedding.
Someone who had been missing from my life for years.
I looked up at Grace.
“Who is this?””
Grace whispered:
“The person who helped Brooke hide the truth.””
And before I could ask another question, the church doors opened again.
A man stepped inside.
A man I never expected to see.
A man who should have been impossible to find.
May you like
My father.
The man everyone told me was dead.
