Chapter 1: The Woman Who Walked Into My Vows
The last thing I expected to see on my wedding day was the woman I thought I had lost forever.
The church was filled with sunlight.
Hundreds of white roses decorated the aisle. Soft music floated through the air. My friends and family watched from polished wooden pews as I stood beside the woman I believed I would spend the rest of my life with.
Brooke looked perfect.
Her white dress shimmered beneath the golden lights hanging from the ceiling. Her smile was calm, confident, and beautiful.
She squeezed my hand.
“We’re finally here,” she whispered.
I smiled back, trying to ignore the strange feeling sitting in my chest.
Not fear.
Not doubt.
Something else.
A warning I couldn’t explain.
The priest opened his Bible and began speaking, but I barely heard the words. My eyes stayed on Brooke.
For months, I had convinced myself that everything in my life had finally fallen into place.
A successful career.
A beautiful home.
A woman who promised she loved me.
And a future I had spent years building.
Until the church doors exploded open.
The sound echoed through the entire room.
Everyone turned.
At first, I thought someone had arrived late.
Then I saw her.
Grace.
My heart stopped.
She stood in the doorway, barely holding herself upright.
Her face was pale. Her hair was messy. Her clothes were wrinkled from what looked like a long, exhausting journey.
But that wasn’t what made the entire church go silent.
It was the little girl holding her hand.
Ava.
Five years old.
The daughter I had never met.
The daughter Grace never told me existed.
The little girl looked terrified, hiding behind her mother while staring at the hundreds of people watching them.
My breath caught.
“Grace?””
Her eyes found mine.
For a second, I saw relief.
Then pain.
Her knees gave out.
She collapsed onto the marble floor.
Gasps filled the church.
I didn’t think.
I didn’t look at Brooke.
I didn’t care about the ceremony.
I ran.
My expensive wedding shoes slid across the floor as I dropped beside Grace.
“Grace, what happened?””
She grabbed my arm with trembling fingers.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“You have to believe me.””
I looked at her.
Really looked at her.
That was when I noticed her wrists.
Dark marks covered her skin.
My stomach tightened.
“What happened to you?””
Before she could answer, a yellow envelope slipped from beneath her arm.
The papers inside scattered across the marble floor.
Medical documents.
Legal forms.
Records.
Brooke arrived behind me.
And the second she saw those papers, her entire expression changed.
The confident bride disappeared.
For the first time since I met her, I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
“Don’t touch those,” Brooke said.
Her voice was sharp.
Everyone heard it.
I slowly looked back at her.
“What?””
Brooke stepped forward.
“That woman is lying.””
Grace immediately pulled Ava closer.
“Please…”
Brooke ignored her.
“She always does this. She shows up when people are happy and tries to destroy everything.””
I stared at Brooke.
Because there was something strange about the way she said it.
Not confusion.
Not shock.
Anger.
Like she already knew exactly why Grace was here.
A piece of paper landed near my hand.
I picked it up.
The heading made my entire body freeze.
Prenatal Record.
Grace’s name was printed clearly.
My name was listed beside hers.
I read it again.
And again.
The room around me disappeared.
My hands started shaking.
“No,” I whispered.
Brooke moved instantly.
She reached for the paper.
“Give that to me.””
I stood up.
Slowly.
“What is this?””
“It’s fake.””
“You knew about this?””
Her silence answered before her words did.
My chest tightened.
Brooke’s face changed.
“Please listen to me. She’s manipulating you.””
Behind me, Grace made a painful sound.
I turned.
She was holding her stomach.
Ava started crying.
“Mommy…”
That single word broke something inside me.
I moved toward them.
But Brooke grabbed my arm.
“You’re making a mistake.””
I looked down at her hand.
Then at her face.
The woman I was about to marry.
The woman standing between me and a pregnant woman who claimed I was the father of her child.
“What did you do?”” I asked quietly.
Brooke froze.
“What?””
“What did you do to make her come here like this?””
The church became completely silent.
No music.
No whispers.
Nothing.
Only the sound of Ava crying.
Then another paper slid across the floor.
This one landed faceup.
Three words were printed across the top.
REQUEST FOR PROTECTION.
Brooke saw it.
And her face turned white.
She moved faster than I expected.
She dove toward the paper.
But this time, I reached it first.
And when I opened it, I realized my wedding wasn’t being destroyed.
It was being exposed.
Because Grace wasn’t just asking for protection.
She was asking me to save her from someone I trusted.
May you like
Someone standing only a few feet away.
My bride.
