Chapter 13: The House Where Everything Began
I stared at the address on my phone.
The abandoned house.
The place where Grace disappeared.
The place everyone avoided talking about.
A place that had existed in the back of my mind for years like a locked room I was never allowed to open.
Now someone was telling me the answers were waiting inside.
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
My father saw my expression.
“You know that address.””
I nodded.
“Where Grace vanished.””
Grace immediately looked away.
Her reaction was small.
But I saw it.
She remembered.
“What happened there?”” I asked.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Grace whispered:
“That was where everything changed.””
I stepped closer.
“Grace.””
She looked at me.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“Then tell me now.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was going to meet someone there.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
“Your mother.””
The room went silent.
My mother looked shocked.
“I never met her there.””
Grace looked at her.
“You did.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
“You don’t remember because you weren’t alone.””
That sentence changed the entire room.
My father looked at Grace.
“Who was with her?””
Grace swallowed.
“Ethan.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
Only for a moment.
But enough.
“You’re lying.””
Grace looked at him.
“No.””
Her voice was stronger now.
“I remember everything.””
I watched her.
The woman who had arrived at my wedding terrified and exhausted was standing differently now.
Like someone who had carried a truth for years and finally had permission to release it.
“I went there because I thought your mother wanted to talk.””
Grace looked at me.
“She said she wanted to fix things.””
My stomach tightened.
“And?””
“She wanted me gone.””
My mother looked away.
I turned toward her.
“Did you threaten her?””
My mother’s eyes filled.
“I was angry.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She lowered her head.
“Yes.””
The admission shocked everyone.
“I told her she needed to leave.””
Grace nodded.
“She told me you would never choose me.””
My hands curled into fists.
“She told me you had a future waiting.””
Grace’s voice cracked.
“She told me I was ruining it.””
I looked at my mother.
“And Ethan?””
Grace’s face changed.
“He was there.””
Ethan laughed.
“You’re rewriting history.””
“No.””
Grace looked directly at him.
“You were the one who took my phone.””
Everyone froze.
My eyes moved to Ethan.
“What?””
Grace continued.
“You deleted the messages between me and him.””
Ethan’s calm expression disappeared.
“You have no proof.””
Grace reached into her bag.
Her hand shook.
But she pulled out something small.
An old phone.
My heart stopped.
“I kept it.””
She handed it to Rebecca.
The attorney examined it carefully.
“What is this?””
“The phone I hid before they found it.””
My father stepped closer.
Rebecca turned it on.
After a few seconds, her expression changed.
“There are messages.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“No.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“Yes.””
The room changed instantly.
Because for the first time, Ethan looked trapped.
Not powerful.
Not in control.
Trapped.
Rebecca continued scrolling.
“These messages show communication between Ethan and your mother.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“I didn’t know what he was planning.””
Ethan looked at her.
“You knew enough.””
The words were a confession.
I felt sick.
Everyone had been connected.
Everyone had touched this disaster.
But one person had been pulling the strings.
Ethan.
My father moved toward him.
“You threatened Grace.””
Ethan didn’t answer.
“You separated a father from his daughter.””
Still nothing.
“You destroyed my son’s life.””
Ethan finally looked up.
“And you destroyed mine.””
His voice was full of anger.
“You all took everything from my family.””
I shook my head.
“So you decided Ava should lose her father?””
His face changed.
For the first time, I saw shame.
Just for a second.
Then it disappeared.
“I had a goal.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You had an obsession.””
Nobody stopped me.
Because everyone knew.
He had crossed every line.
Then the front door opened.
A woman stood there.
The same woman from the phone call.
She looked nervous.
But determined.
Ethan immediately stepped back.
“You.””
She looked at him.
“Yes.””
Rebecca recognized her.
“Lillian.””
I looked between them.
“Who is she?””
Lillian looked at me.
“My name is Lillian Carter.””
The name meant nothing.
Until she continued.
“I was the woman your grandfather hired to investigate the company.””
My father looked surprised.
“You were involved?””
She nodded.
“I found the truth years ago.””
I stepped forward.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with regret.
“Because I was threatened.””
The room went quiet.
“By who?””
She looked at Ethan.
“By him.””
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“I should have known you survived.””
Lillian ignored him.
“I have proof.””
She opened her bag.
Inside was a drive.
A small piece of evidence.
But everyone in that room knew it could destroy everything.
“This contains the original records.””
Rebecca looked at it.
“Everything?””
Lillian nodded.
“Everything.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From my mother.
Except she was standing right in front of me.
I looked at the screen.
One sentence.
*Do not trust Lillian.*
I slowly looked up.
My mother’s face was pale.
“You sent that?””
She didn’t answer.
Because she didn’t have to.
Another message appeared.
This time from an unknown number.
*You’re still looking at the wrong enemy.*
I felt a chill.
I looked around the room.
Everyone was there.
Everyone had secrets.
Then I realized something terrifying.
May you like
The person who sent the message wasn’t outside.
They were watching us.
