Chapter 5: The Truth Grace Was Forced To Hide
I wanted to believe my father was wrong.
I needed him to be wrong.
Because accepting the truth meant accepting that the woman I was about to marry had spent months building a lie around me.
I looked at Brooke.
Waiting.
Waiting for her to deny everything.
To laugh.
To tell me this was some misunderstanding.
But she didn’t.
She just stood there.
Silent.
And silence can be louder than any confession.
“Say something,” I whispered.
Brooke looked at me.
Her eyes were no longer filled with fear.
They were filled with frustration.
“You want the truth?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
She took a breath.
“The truth is that everyone in this room has lied to you.””
Grace looked shocked.
My father narrowed his eyes.
Brooke continued.
“Grace lied when she disappeared.””
Grace flinched.
“She took your daughter away.””
My jaw tightened.
I looked at Grace.
“Is that true?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I didn’t have a choice.””
“There is always a choice.””
Her expression broke.
“You don’t know what I was facing.””
“Then tell me.””
Grace looked at Brooke.
Then at my father.
Then finally back at me.
“When I found out I was pregnant, I wanted to tell you immediately.””
My chest tightened.
“But before I could, Brooke contacted me.””
The entire room seemed to lean closer.
“She told me you were moving on.””
I looked at Brooke.
“She told me you didn’t want a child with me.””
My stomach turned.
“That’s a lie.””
Grace nodded.
“I know that now.””
Her voice cracked.
“But at the time, I believed her.””
I looked at Brooke.
“Why?””
She crossed her arms.
“Because I knew you better than she did.””
That answer made no sense.
“You knew me?””
“Yes.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
She looked away.
My father answered.
“Brooke’s family knew your family for years.””
I stared at him.
“What are you talking about?””
He sighed.
“The business partnership between our families wasn’t an accident.””
I felt like I was falling through the floor.
Every part of my life suddenly felt like it had been arranged by someone else.
“My relationship with Brooke…”
My father nodded.
“Was planned.””
The word hit me.
Planned.
A relationship.
A marriage.
My entire future.
Planned.
Brooke stepped forward.
“You’re acting like I forced you to love me.””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“I’m acting like I don’t know what was real anymore.””
That hurt her.
I saw it.
For the first time, I saw something genuine.
Or maybe I just wanted to.
“You did love me,” she whispered.
I almost believed her.
Almost.
Then Ava cried.
A small sound.
But enough.
Enough to remind me why we were standing there.
A child had been hidden from me.
A woman had been hurt.
And my wedding had become a courtroom without a judge.
I turned to Grace.
“What happened after you left?””
She took a deep breath.
“I went to another state.””
“Why?””
“Because someone threatened me.””
My body went still.
“Who?””
Grace hesitated.
My father answered.
“Her brother.””
Brooke immediately shook her head.
“No.””
My father continued.
“He told Grace that if she contacted you, she would regret it.””
Grace looked down.
“He said he had connections. He said nobody would believe me.””
I looked at Brooke.
“And you knew?””
She didn’t answer.
That was the worst answer possible.
I stepped away from her.
A few people in the church gasped.
The movement was small.
But everyone understood.
The man who had walked toward the altar was no longer standing beside his bride.
“I need the truth.””
Brooke’s voice became softer.
“I did love you.””
I looked at her.
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I was scared.””
That surprised me.
Not because I believed her.
Because I didn’t.
“What were you scared of?””
She looked at the floor.
“My family.””
My father’s expression changed.
“Don’t do this.””
Brooke looked at him.
“You know what they’re capable of.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Brooke whispered:
“I was trying to get away from them.””
I stared at her.
“So Grace was collateral damage?””
Her face tightened.
“No.””
“Then what was she?””
Brooke looked at Grace.
And for a second, I saw something unexpected.
Guilt.
“I thought she would disappear.””
Grace looked devastated.
“You knew I was pregnant.””
Brooke closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
Ava grabbed her mother’s hand.
Grace pulled her closer.
I felt sick.
The woman I trusted had known about my child.
For months.
She knew.
And she let me believe I had nothing.
I walked toward the church exit.
I needed air.
I needed space.
I needed to understand how my life had changed in less than an hour.
Then my father stopped me.
“Wait.””
I turned.
He held another envelope.
“This is why I came back.””
I looked at it.
“What is it?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“The proof that Brooke was not the only person who wanted you away from Grace.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was one photograph.
One person.
One moment.
And it made my entire body freeze.
May you like
Because the person standing beside Brooke in the picture was someone I trusted even more.
My own mother.
