Chapter 8: The Mother I Never Knew

My entire body froze.

Someone was upstairs.

My father immediately motioned for silence.

Grace pulled Ava closer.

I wanted to tell them everything would be okay.

But I didn’t know if that was true anymore.

Not after everything I had learned.

The house that once represented safety now felt like a trap.

My father slowly walked toward the staircase.

I followed.

“No,” he whispered.

I ignored him.

Because I was done standing behind other people while they controlled my life.

Every secret had happened because someone decided I couldn’t handle the truth.

I was finished being protected.

We reached the second floor.

The hallway was dark.

The old family photographs on the walls watched us silently.

Me as a child.

My parents smiling.

A perfect family.

A perfect lie.

A bedroom door at the end of the hallway moved slightly.

My father stopped.

“Whoever is in there…”

He didn’t finish.

The door opened.

And an older woman stepped out.

My mother.

For a moment, everything inside me stopped.

Because no matter what I knew, no matter what evidence existed, seeing her face brought back years of memories.

She looked at me.

And the first thing she said was:

“You weren’t supposed to find out this way.””

Not hello.

Not my name.

Not an apology.

You weren’t supposed to find out this way.

I stared at her.

“How long?””

Her expression changed.

“How long what?””

“How long have you been lying to me?””

Pain crossed her face.

Then disappeared.

“You’re angry.””

I laughed.

“Angry?””

I held up the folder.

“Is that what you call this?””

She looked at it.

And for the first time, I saw fear.

“You went through my things.””

“You wrote instructions about destroying someone’s life.””

She looked toward Grace.

Her expression hardened.

“So she finally came back.””

Grace stepped back.

The hatred in my mother’s eyes was impossible to ignore.

“You still blame her?””

My mother looked at me.

“She ruined everything.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You did.””

Silence.

A long, painful silence.

My mother stared at me.

Then she whispered:

“I did what I had to do.””

Those words were worse than an apology.

Because they meant she still believed she was right.

“Why?””

She took a breath.

“Because I knew what would happen.””

“What would happen?””

“You would throw away your future.””

I looked at Grace.

“She was my future?””

My mother shook her head.

“She was a distraction.””

I felt sick.

“A person isn’t a distraction.””

“You don’t understand.””

“No. I don’t.””

My mother walked closer.

“When you were young, I watched people use your father. I watched people take advantage of his kindness. I promised myself I would never let that happen to you.””

“And your solution was controlling my entire life?””

Her eyes filled.

“I was protecting you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The word felt powerful.

“You were protecting yourself.””

She looked hurt.

But she didn’t deny it.

My father stepped forward.

“Where is the investigator?””

My mother looked at him.

“You brought him back.””

The way she said it told me everything.

She wasn’t surprised my father was alive.

She was surprised he was here.

“You knew he survived.””

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“You knew?””

She looked at me.

“I had to.””

I stepped backward.

“How could you?””

She didn’t answer.

Because there was no answer that could fix it.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I looked at the screen.

Nobody spoke.

I answered.

A man’s voice came through.

“You need to leave that house immediately.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who is this?””

The voice hesitated.

“The person who found the evidence your mother was trying to destroy.””

I looked around.

Everyone was watching me.

“What evidence?””

The man replied:

“The evidence proving Brooke was never the mastermind.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you talking about?””

The voice became urgent.

“Your bride was following orders.””

I looked at Brooke’s name still saved in my phone.

The woman I thought betrayed me.

The woman I thought chose greed over love.

The man continued:

May you like

“The person controlling Brooke is still out there.””

Then the call ended.
