Chapter 6: The Family That Built The Lie

I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

My mother.

Standing beside Brooke.

Standing beside the same woman who had spent months hiding my daughter from me.

I looked up.

“This can’t be real.””

My father’s expression was heavy.

“It is.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My mother would never.””

Nobody answered.

And that silence hurt more than anything.

Because everyone else already knew.

I was the only person still trying to protect people who had never protected me.

Grace stepped closer.

“I didn’t want to hurt you.””

I looked at her.

“You should have told me.””

“I tried.””

Her voice broke.

“I tried so many times.””

I closed my eyes.

Because a part of me believed her.

A part of me remembered all the strange moments over the years.

Missed calls.

Unanswered messages.

People telling me Grace had moved on.

People telling me she didn’t want anything to do with me.

What if those weren’t choices?

What if they were decisions made for her?

My father walked closer.

“There is more.””

I almost laughed.

More.

Of course there was more.

Every answer created another question.

“What now?””

He looked at Brooke.

“She knows where your mother is.””

Brooke’s face changed.

“I don’t.””

My father stared at her.

“You do.””

“No.””

“You were there the night everything happened.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at Brooke.

“What happened that night?””

She looked away.

That was enough.

“Brooke.””

Her shoulders lowered.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She swallowed.

“I knew your mother wanted Grace gone.””

My heart stopped.

“She wanted?””

Brooke nodded slowly.

“She thought Grace would ruin your future.””

I felt anger rising.

“My future?””

Brooke looked at me.

“Your family had money. Power. Influence.””

“And?””

“And your mother believed Grace was using you.””

I looked at Grace.

The woman standing there exhausted and afraid.

The mother protecting her child.

The person everyone tried to erase.

“She was wrong.””

Brooke didn’t argue.

That was the most painful part.

Because she knew.

My father walked toward the altar.

“The reason I disappeared was because I discovered what they were doing.””

I turned.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Your mother wasn’t protecting the family.””

He paused.

“She was protecting the money.””

My stomach tightened.

“What money?””

“The inheritance your grandfather left you.””

Everything suddenly connected.

Brooke.

The marriage.

The timing.

The pressure.

The secrets.

“She knew?””

My father nodded.

“She knew when you would receive control of the trust.””

I looked at Brooke.

She looked devastated.

“I didn’t know about the money at first.””

“At first?””

She looked down.

That was enough.

I walked away from her.

Outside the church, the sunlight felt different.

The world looked exactly the same.

But nothing was the same.

My wedding day.

My daughter.

My father alive.

My mother part of a conspiracy.

My bride surrounded by secrets.

Ava followed Grace outside.

She held her stuffed rabbit tightly.

I knelt down beside her.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded.

Then asked something that broke me.

“Are you mad at Mommy?””

I looked at Grace.

Then back at Ava.

“No.””

It was the truth.

Not completely.

But enough.

Ava looked relieved.

“She said you wouldn’t come.””

Those words cut deeper than anything.

“Who said that?””

Ava looked toward the church.

“Miss Brooke.””

I froze.

Grace immediately covered her mouth.

My father looked away.

I stood.

Slowly.

Brooke had not just hidden documents.

She had shaped my daughter’s entire understanding of me.

I walked back inside.

Brooke saw my face.

And she knew.

“What did Ava tell you?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I wanted to hear her admit it.

“You told her I wouldn’t come.””

Brooke’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was wrong.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You made her believe she wasn’t wanted.””

“I was trying to protect myself.””

That sentence changed something inside me.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was honest.

She had finally said it.

Everything had been about protecting herself.

I looked at the woman I almost married.

Then at the family that had destroyed years of my life.

And I made a decision.

“I want the complete truth.””

Nobody spoke.

I continued.

“And this time, nobody gets to choose what I’m allowed to know.””

My father nodded.

“Good.””

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed instantly.

“What happened?””

Everyone watched him.

A few seconds later, he lowered the phone.

His face was pale.

“The person who has been helping Grace escape…”

He looked at me.

“Was attacked this morning.””

Grace covered her mouth.

“Who?””

My father looked at Brooke.

May you like

Then said:

“Your mother.””
