Chapter 9: The Brother Who Knew Too Much

The accusation was impossible.

It was also terrifying.

The woman on the phone had not named anyone.

But her words stayed with me.

*The people closest to you.*

Family.

Friends.

People we trusted.

That was what made secrets dangerous.

They didn't hide among strangers.

They hid among people who knew exactly where to hurt you.

For the next two days, my brothers and I investigated everything.

Every person connected to the foundation.

Every business relationship.

Every person who had access to my father's files.

But one thing kept appearing.

A missing piece.

Someone had been removing evidence before we found it.

Someone who knew exactly where to look.

Someone who understood the Bennett family's systems.

That narrowed the possibilities.

Too much.

Marcus noticed it too.

"We need to consider every possibility.""

I looked at him.

"Even family?""

His silence answered.

I hated that.

Because my family had always been my safe place.

My brothers were the people who taught me what love looked like.

They protected me when Adrian hurt me.

They stood beside me when everyone else watched.

But trust was fragile.

And once broken, even innocent people could become suspects.

That night, I found Marcus alone in the study.

He was holding an old photograph.

I recognized it immediately.

It was our family.

My parents.

My brothers.

Me.

A normal day.

A happy day.

"You think I don't know?""

Marcus looked up.

"Know what?""

"That something is wrong.""

He sighed.

"I've been trying to protect you.""

I sat across from him.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

His expression softened.

"And you hate it.""

"Yes.""

I looked at the photograph.

"I spent my whole life being protected from the truth.""

Marcus looked hurt.

"You think we were controlling you.""

"I think everyone decided I couldn't handle reality.""

He was quiet.

Then he said:

"Maybe we were wrong.""

That surprised me.

Marcus rarely admitted mistakes.

"You were always the strongest person in this family.""

I looked at him.

"Then why hide things?""

"Because you were the only one who still believed people were good.""

The honesty in his voice hurt.

Because it was true.

I wanted to believe Adrian loved me.

I wanted to believe my marriage mattered.

I wanted to believe betrayal was impossible.

Marcus continued.

"When your mother died, she made us promise something.""

"What?""

"That we would let you choose your own life.""

I frowned.

"But you didn't.""

"No.""

He looked down.

"Because when Adrian appeared, we knew his name.""

My heart tightened.

"You knew?""

Marcus nodded.

"We warned your father.""

"About Adrian?""

"About his family.""

I stood.

"Then why didn't you stop me?""

Marcus looked at me.

"Because your father said something I'll never forget.""

"What?""

He looked directly at me.

"He said if we forced you away from Adrian, you would spend your life wondering if we were wrong.""

I swallowed.

My father had known.

Everyone had known.

And still they let me choose.

Because they loved me enough to risk me being hurt.

That realization changed something inside me.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed instantly.

"What happened?""

He listened.

Then stood.

"Where?""

A pause.

"Send me the location.""

He hung up.

I immediately knew.

"What?""

He looked at me.

"Adrian was released.""

My stomach dropped.

"Released?""

"Temporary hearing.""

"How?""

Marcus's face hardened.

"Someone paid his legal team.""

Julian entered the room.

"I just found out.""

He looked at us.

"There is something else.""

"What?""

He held up his phone.

A message.

Another unknown number.

But this time, it wasn't a warning.

It was a photograph.

A photograph of Adrian leaving the courthouse.

Standing beside him was someone we knew.

Someone who had access to our family.

Someone who had been helping Adrian from the beginning.

I stared at the image.

And felt the last piece of trust inside me shatter.

May you like

Because standing beside Adrian Whitmore was not a stranger.

It was someone from my own bloodline.
