Chapter 10: The Betrayal Hidden in Our Bloodline

The photograph stayed on the screen for almost a full minute.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because sometimes the most painful betrayals were not the ones you expected.

They were the ones you refused to imagine.

The person standing beside Adrian outside the courthouse was someone who had been part of my life since childhood.

Someone who had sat at my family's dinner table.

Someone who had held my hand when my mother died.

Someone who had promised my father they would always protect us.

My uncle.

Richard Bennett.

My father's younger brother.

I stared at the photograph, waiting for my mind to reject it.

Waiting for someone to tell me there was another explanation.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

Anything.

But the image was clear.

Richard stood beside Adrian with a calm expression.

Almost like they had planned it.

"That can't be true," I whispered.

Marcus didn't answer.

And his silence hurt more than the photograph.

Because Marcus was the one person who always told the truth.

Even when it hurt.

"When did you know?"" I asked.

His eyes moved toward me.

"I didn't.""

"But you suspected.""

A long pause.

Then he nodded.

"Yes.""

My chest tightened.

"How long?""

Marcus looked away.

"Years.""

The room felt colder.

"Years?""

Julian closed his laptop slowly.

"Your uncle has always been connected to the foundation's financial operations.""

I looked at him.

"But he was family.""

Julian's expression softened.

"That's exactly why he had access.""

I stood up and walked away from the table.

I needed space.

Air.

Something.

Because everything I believed about my family was changing.

First Adrian.

Now Richard.

How many people had been lying to me?

How many smiles had hidden secrets?

I reached the window and looked outside.

The city lights blurred.

"I trusted him.""

Marcus came closer.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

My voice cracked.

"I spent years believing Adrian was the person who betrayed me because he was selfish.""

I turned around.

"But what happens when the people who taught you trust are the ones who break it?""

Nobody answered.

Because there was no easy answer.

Caleb stepped forward.

"We need to focus.""

I looked at him.

"Focus?""

"Yes.""

His voice was calm.

"The person who helped Adrian escape investigation is dangerous.""

I knew he was right.

But knowing didn't make it easier.

"What does Richard want?""

Julian looked at the files spread across the desk.

"Control.""

The word hung in the air.

"Your father built the foundation to help people," Julian continued.

"Richard saw it as an opportunity.""

"Money?""

"More than money.""

I frowned.

"What else is there?""

Marcus opened another file.

Inside was a document with my mother's handwriting.

The moment I saw it, my heart stopped.

"My mother?""

He nodded.

"She knew Richard was involved.""

I took the paper.

The letter was short.

I fear Richard has forgotten why we started this work.

He no longer sees people. He only sees opportunities.

I swallowed.

My mother's handwriting became harder to read.

If anything happens to me, do not trust him with the foundation.

My fingers trembled.

"She knew.""

Marcus nodded.

"But she didn't know how far he would go.""

A terrible thought entered my mind.

"Did Richard have anything to do with her death?""

The room went silent.

Nobody wanted to say it.

But nobody dismissed it either.

That was the answer.

Caleb immediately picked up his phone.

"I'm reopening every file connected to your mother's death.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because if Richard was involved then, we need to know.""

For the first time in days, I felt something stronger than pain.

Determination.

Adrian had destroyed my marriage.

But Richard had attacked something much deeper.

My family.

My mother's legacy.

The people she fought for.

I turned back toward my brothers.

"What do we do now?""

Marcus looked at me.

And for the first time, he didn't see me as someone to protect.

He saw me as an equal.

"We expose him.""

Three hours later, we discovered something that changed everything.

Richard wasn't just helping Adrian.

He was controlling him.

The financial records showed dozens of transactions between Richard's private companies and Adrian's businesses.

But there was something stranger.

Adrian had been moving money.

Richard had been directing where it went.

Which meant Adrian was not the mastermind.

He was the face.

The public figure.

The man everyone blamed.

But behind him was someone much older.

Someone who had spent decades building influence.

My uncle.

The man my father trusted.

The man my mother feared.

Then another file appeared.

A hidden account.

Created twenty years ago.

The beneficiary name made me stop breathing.

*Emily Bennett.*

My mother.

"What?""

Marcus immediately looked over.

"That's impossible.""

Julian checked the records.

"No.""

He stared at the screen.

"It's real.""

I felt dizzy.

"My mother had an account?""

"Not exactly.""

Julian looked confused.

"The account was created in her name, but the transactions happened after her death.""

My heart raced.

Someone had been using my mother's identity.

Someone had been hiding money through her.

Someone wanted the world to believe she was involved.

Marcus slammed his hand on the table.

"Richard.""

The name came out like a curse.

But before we could do anything else, my phone rang.

Adrian.

I stared at the screen.

Nobody spoke.

Then I answered.

"Why are you calling me?""

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then his voice came.

Different.

Not arrogant.

Not angry.

Afraid.

"Because I finally know the truth.""

I tightened my grip.

"What truth?""

A pause.

May you like

Then Adrian whispered:

"Your uncle used me.""
