Chapter 12: The Mastermind Behind the Mask

Nobody spoke after reading my mother's words.

Because we all understood the same thing.

Richard was not the beginning.

He was only a piece.

A servant.

A person carrying out someone else's plan.

My mother's final warning pointed toward something much bigger.

Someone who had been hidden behind the entire operation.

Marcus carefully turned the pages.

"We need to read everything.""

We gathered around the table.

The notebook was not a diary.

It was an investigation.

My mother had documented names.

Dates.

Meetings.

Financial transfers.

People she suspected.

And one name appeared more than any other.

*Victor Hale.*

I frowned.

"Who is that?""

Julian looked up.

"Wait.""

He searched quickly.

Then his expression changed.

"No.""

"What?""

"Victor Hale.""

The name sounded familiar.

Then it hit me.

"Vanessa's father?""

Julian nodded.

The room went silent.

Vanessa.

Adrian's mistress.

Her father.

Another connection.

Another secret.

I felt sick.

"This keeps getting bigger.""

Marcus continued reading.

"Your mother believed Victor Hale created a network of wealthy families who controlled charities and businesses.""

"Why?""

"Influence.""

He looked at me.

"Power.""

I thought about Vanessa.

The perfect dress.

The perfect smile.

The way she walked into rooms like she belonged there.

Had she known?

Had she been part of this?

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

A photo.

This time, I almost didn't want to open it.

But I did.

It showed Vanessa.

Meeting with Richard.

My stomach turned.

The caption read:

*Everyone you trusted was chosen for a reason.*

I showed my brothers.

Caleb immediately said:

"She's involved.""

Marcus shook his head.

"Maybe.""

"Maybe?""

He looked at me.

"We need proof.""

That was the difference between us and them.

They acted on emotions.

We acted on truth.

But emotionally?

I wanted answers.

I wanted someone to admit they had destroyed my life.

The next page in my mother's notebook revealed something unexpected.

A name.

Not Richard.

Not Victor.

Someone else.

Someone I knew.

Someone who had been beside me during my marriage.

I stared at the handwriting.

"No.""

Marcus looked at me.

"What?""

I pointed.

The name.

*Elena Carter.*

My best friend.

The woman who had been my closest confidante for years.

The woman who held me while I cried about Adrian.

The woman who told me I deserved better.

I couldn't breathe.

"No.""

Marcus watched my reaction.

"Who is she?""

I looked up.

"Someone I trusted.""

Caleb frowned.

"Are you sure?""

"I've known her since college.""

Julian studied the notebook.

"Your mother wrote her name here.""

"But why?""

I turned the page.

The answer was underneath.

Elena is not who she claims to be.

My hands went numb.

No.

Not Elena.

Anyone else.

But not her.

Because betrayal from an enemy hurt.

Betrayal from someone you loved changed who you became.

Then my phone rang.

This time, I recognized the number.

Elena.

Everyone looked at me.

I answered.

"Hello?""

Her voice came immediately.

"Please don't trust them.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

"I know you found the notebook.""

Silence.

My blood ran cold.

"How do you know?""

A pause.

Then:

"Because I helped your mother write it.""

I couldn't speak.

"What are you saying?""

Elena's voice cracked.

"I tried to warn you.""

"Warn me about what?""

She whispered:

"About the man who killed your mother.""

The room went silent.

Every instinct told me to hang up.

But I couldn't.

"Who?""

Elena took a shaky breath.

Then said the name.

May you like

And the world stopped.

"Your father.""
