Chapter 13: The Truth My Father Buried Forever
For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
The words repeated in my mind.
*Your father.*
Two simple words.
Two words that shattered everything I thought I knew.
I looked at my brothers.
Marcus.
Julian.
Caleb.
Three men who had spent their entire lives protecting me.
Three men who had loved our father.
And none of them moved.
None of them immediately denied it.
That scared me more than anything.
"Say that again.""
My voice was barely a whisper.
On the phone, Elena was crying.
"I didn't want you to find out this way.""
My hand tightened around the phone.
"Find out what?""
Nobody answered.
Not Elena.
Not my brothers.
Not the silence surrounding me.
"Elena.""
My voice became sharper.
"You said my father killed my mother.""
A long pause.
Then:
"Yes.""
The word broke something inside me.
"No.""
I shook my head.
"No, you don't understand.""
"I do.""
"You don't.""
My voice cracked.
"My father loved her.""
Elena was quiet.
Then she said something that hurt even more.
"People can love someone and still destroy them.""
I closed my eyes.
Because I hated that she made sense.
My father had always been my hero.
The man who taught me kindness.
The man who told me honesty mattered.
The man who held my hand at my mother's funeral and promised he would always protect me.
Could that same man have caused her death?
Impossible.
Except nothing felt impossible anymore.
I ended the call.
Nobody spoke.
The room felt smaller.
Finally, Marcus stood.
"She lied.""
The certainty in his voice surprised me.
I looked at him.
"You know?""
He looked angry.
Not defensive.
Angry.
"Yes.""
"How?""
Marcus looked down.
"Because I was there.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
He closed his eyes.
"When your mother died.""
The words came slowly.
"I was twenty-three. Caleb was still young. Julian was away at school.""
I stared at him.
"You never told me.""
Marcus swallowed.
"Because your father begged me not to.""
My chest tightened.
"Why?""
"Because he said you had already lost enough.""
I stepped back.
"So what happened?""
Marcus looked toward the window.
"I don't know everything.""
That was the worst answer.
"But I know one thing.""
He looked at me.
"Your father did not kill your mother.""
Relief came for half a second.
Then disappeared.
"Then why would Elena say that?""
Nobody knew.
Until Julian spoke.
"Because someone wants us to believe it.""
He pointed at the notebook.
"Look.""
We turned.
Julian was studying my mother's notes.
"The names. The warnings.""
He traced a line.
"Your mother suspected someone would try to rewrite history.""
Marcus walked closer.
"What are you saying?""
Julian looked at me.
"Your mother's investigation wasn't only about money.""
He turned the notebook around.
"It was about manipulation.""
The room became silent.
"They didn't just steal money.""
Julian continued.
"They destroyed reputations. They created false stories. They made innocent people look guilty.""
I thought about Adrian.
The lies.
The carefully built image.
The perfect appearances.
This was bigger than one man.
This was an entire system.
Caleb grabbed his phone.
"I need to find Elena.""
"No.""
Everyone looked at me.
I don't know why I said it.
Maybe because some part of me still believed my friend wasn't my enemy.
Maybe because I needed answers from her directly.
"She called because she wanted me to know something.""
Marcus looked concerned.
"Or because she wanted to manipulate you.""
I looked at him.
"Then I'll find out.""
Two hours later, Elena arrived.
Alone.
No security.
No lawyer.
No excuses.
She looked different.
Not because she had changed.
Because I saw her differently.
The person I trusted.
The person who had sat beside me while I cried over Adrian.
The person who knew every weakness I had.
And maybe had been collecting them.
She stepped inside.
"I know you hate me.""
I stared at her.
"I don't know what I feel.""
That was the truth.
Anger was easier.
Pain was easier.
But confusion?
Confusion was exhausting.
"Tell me everything.""
Elena nodded.
"I knew your mother.""
"I know.""
"No.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I knew what she was investigating.""
She sat down.
"Your mother discovered that Victor Hale, Richard Bennett, and several other powerful people were using charities to move illegal money.""
I listened.
"Your father helped her investigate.""
Marcus looked at me.
"He did?""
Elena nodded.
"Your father was not her enemy.""
She looked at me.
"He was her partner.""
The relief hurt.
Because it meant I had almost believed something terrible about my father.
"What happened?""
Elena looked down.
"They found out.""
A pause.
"And they attacked back.""
My heart raced.
"My mother's death?""
Elena nodded.
"They tried to make it look like an accident.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Who?""
Elena looked at him.
"Victor Hale.""
Silence.
"Not your father.""
I closed my eyes.
The pain was overwhelming.
All these years.
All these assumptions.
All these secrets.
My father had not betrayed my mother.
He had been trying to save her.
"Then why did everyone think he did?""
Elena looked at me.
"Because Richard helped create the story.""
My uncle.
The person who stood beside us.
The person who smiled at family gatherings.
The person who helped bury the truth.
I felt sick.
"Why?""
"Because Richard wanted control.""
Elena reached into her bag.
She removed a small envelope.
"I kept this because your mother told me to.""
My heart stopped.
Another envelope.
Another secret.
She handed it to me.
Inside was a letter.
My mother's handwriting.
If you are reading this, then the people who tried to silence me have failed.
I held my breath.
The greatest danger is not the person who hates you.
It is the person who pretends to love you while waiting for you to fall.
I looked up.
Elena whispered:
"Your mother knew someone close to you would betray you.""
I turned the page.
The final sentence made my blood run cold.
May you like
The person responsible for everything is not hiding anymore.
They are already standing beside you.
