Chapter 8: The Enemy Inside the Family
My father always said secrets were dangerous.
I used to think he meant other people's secrets.
I never realized he was talking about his own.
By evening, we were back at the Bennett estate.
The place where my father had kept his private office.
The office had remained untouched since his death.
My brothers rarely entered.
Not because they couldn't.
Because they respected him.
But now respect had to wait.
We needed answers.
Caleb unlocked the door.
The smell of old leather and paper filled the room.
My father's desk sat exactly as he left it.
A reminder of a man who had always appeared impossible to break.
But now I wondered.
How much had he carried alone?
Julian searched the drawers.
Marcus examined the shelves.
I stood still.
Something felt wrong.
Not dangerous.
Familiar.
Like the room was trying to tell me something.
I walked toward my father's bookshelf.
Growing up, I had always been told never to touch the books on the bottom shelf.
I had assumed it was because they were old.
Now I wondered.
I removed the first book.
Nothing.
The second.
Nothing.
The third.
A small click sounded.
Everyone turned.
Behind the bookshelf was a hidden compartment.
Caleb stared.
"Your father had a secret room?""
I smiled sadly.
"Apparently everyone in my family did.""
Inside the compartment were files.
Hundreds of pages.
Financial records.
Letters.
Photographs.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
Whitmore.
Adrian's family.
Marcus opened the oldest file.
"This goes back twenty-five years.""
Julian scanned the documents.
"These aren't charity records.""
"What are they?""
He looked concerned.
"Investigations.""
My father had been investigating the Whitmore family.
Before Adrian was even an adult.
I picked up a letter.
It was addressed to my father.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
You don't understand what you're dealing with.
The Whitmores are not interested in money alone.
They want control.
I looked at Marcus.
"Who wrote this?""
He checked the signature.
His face changed.
"What?""
He turned the page.
"Thomas Whitmore.""
Adrian's father.
The room went silent.
Why would Adrian's own father warn mine?
That made no sense.
Unless...
Unless there was another layer.
I continued reading.
I made mistakes.
I thought I could control the people around me.
I was wrong.
My son does not know the entire truth.
I froze.
His son.
Adrian.
Marcus leaned closer.
The next line made my blood run cold.
If Adrian ever finds out what happened, he will destroy everything to uncover it.
I looked up.
"What happened?""
Nobody knew.
But one thing was becoming clear.
Adrian was not just a villain in this story.
He was also searching for something.
Something his own father hid from him.
Suddenly, my phone rang.
Again.
Unknown number.
This time, I answered immediately.
"Who is this?""
The voice was different.
A woman.
Older.
"You need to stop looking.""
My entire body stiffened.
"Who are you?""
"You don't understand what you're opening.""
I looked at the files.
"Tell me the truth.""
A pause.
Then:
"Your mother was not the only person who died because of this secret.""
My blood ran cold.
"What?""
The woman continued.
"Your father spent years trying to expose them.""
"Who?""
Silence.
Then she whispered:
"The people closest to you.""
The call ended.
I slowly lowered the phone.
My brothers watched me.
"What did she say?""
I looked at them.
For the first time, I wondered if we were looking in the wrong direction.
May you like
Maybe the enemy wasn't outside our family.
Maybe it had been inside all along.
