Chapter 5: The Woman Adrian Was Really Married To
I didn't sleep that night.
I couldn't.
Every memory I had of Adrian was suddenly infected with doubt.
The first date.
The proposal.
Our wedding.
Every "I love you.""
Every promise.
Every moment I thought was real.
I kept asking myself the same question.
Was any of it real?
Around three in the morning, I finally walked downstairs.
Marcus was already awake.
Of course he was.
My oldest brother had always been the person who carried everyone's problems quietly.
He looked up from the documents spread across the table.
"You should be sleeping.""
I smiled weakly.
"So should you.""
He looked at me.
"I've been worried about you since the gala.""
I sat down.
"I thought I was stronger than this.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Being hurt doesn't make you weak.""
I looked away.
"I spent eight years with someone who might have never loved me.""
Marcus was silent.
Then he said something I would never forget.
"Someone else's inability to love you properly does not change your value.""
I swallowed hard.
Because for years, Adrian's words had slowly become my own thoughts.
Maybe I wasn't enough.
Maybe I was too quiet.
Maybe I wasn't interesting enough.
Maybe I was lucky he chose me.
But now I understood.
The problem was never that I wasn't enough.
The problem was that I gave my heart to someone who saw love as ownership.
A knock came from the doorway.
Caleb entered.
His expression was serious.
"We found something.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He placed a tablet on the table.
"There were additional accounts.""
Julian appeared behind him.
"Accounts connected to Adrian's personal network.""
I looked at the screen.
There were names.
Companies.
Transactions.
Then I saw one name.
And my blood froze.
*Bennett Legacy Holdings.*
I looked up.
"What is this?""
Julian's face was tense.
"That's impossible.""
"Why?""
"Because that company was closed fifteen years ago.""
Marcus stood.
"Show me.""
Julian zoomed in.
The transaction history appeared.
Money had been transferred through the account months before Adrian met me.
Then again after we married.
My hands trembled.
"He used my family's name?""
Caleb nodded.
"Not exactly.""
"What does that mean?""
Marcus looked at the screen.
"It means someone gave him access.""
The room became silent.
Someone.
Not Adrian alone.
Someone inside the circle.
Someone who knew about my family.
Someone who wanted the foundation destroyed.
I looked at my brothers.
"Who?""
Nobody answered.
And that terrified me more than anything.
Because my brothers knew everyone.
They knew politicians.
Business leaders.
Law enforcement.
They knew exactly how dangerous people could be.
Marcus finally spoke.
"We need to ask you something.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"When you married Adrian, did he ever ask about your inheritance?""
I thought back.
"No.""
"Your mother's documents?""
"No.""
"Family investments?""
"No.""
Marcus looked relieved for half a second.
Then confused.
"Then why?""
I stared at the screen.
Because suddenly something didn't fit.
If Adrian wanted my family's assets...
Why didn't he ask me for anything?
Why did he keep me away from financial discussions?
Why did he never push me toward the foundation records?
Unless...
Unless he had another reason.
A terrible possibility entered my mind.
"He wasn't trying to get information from me.""
Everyone looked at me.
"He was trying to keep me away from something.""
Julian slowly nodded.
"Exactly.""
A cold silence filled the room.
Adrian didn't marry me because he needed access.
He married me because I was connected to something.
Something he wanted to control.
Something he wanted hidden.
Caleb looked at his phone.
Then his expression changed.
"What?""
He didn't answer immediately.
Marcus noticed.
"Caleb.""
He turned the phone around.
A message appeared.
One sentence.
*You should ask your sister why Adrian really chose her.*
My heart stopped.
"Who sent that?""
Caleb checked the number.
Unknown.
Marcus immediately reached for the phone.
"Trace it.""
Julian was already moving.
But I couldn't look away from the message.
Because there was something else.
A second message appeared.
This time with an attachment.
A photograph.
I opened it.
And instantly felt like the ground disappeared beneath me.
It was a picture of Adrian.
Standing beside my father.
Taken twenty years ago.
Before I knew Adrian existed.
Before he became my husband.
Before everything.
