Chapter 6: The Man Who Entered My Life Before I Met Him

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

The photograph sat on the table between us.

A piece of evidence that shouldn't exist.

My father.

Adrian.

Together.

Twenty years ago.

Two men who should have had nothing in common.

Two men connected by a secret I had never known.

"My father knew him?""

My voice sounded distant.

Marcus looked just as shocked as I felt.

"I don't understand.""

Caleb picked up the photograph carefully.

"We need to verify when and where this was taken.""

Julian was already working.

"I'll find out.""

I stared at Adrian's face in the photograph.

He looked younger.

Different.

But unmistakably him.

The same confident smile.

The same expression of someone who believed he belonged anywhere.

How many secrets had he carried into my marriage?

How many times had he looked at me and hidden the truth?

An hour later, Julian finally looked up.

"I found it.""

Everyone turned.

"The photograph was taken at a private business meeting.""

"Between my father and Adrian?""

Julian nodded.

"But there's more.""

He connected his laptop to the screen.

A document appeared.

"Adrian's father was also there.""

My heart sank.

"Both of them?""

"Yes.""

Marcus stared at the document.

"That meeting was related to the foundation.""

The room became silent again.

Everything always returned to the foundation.

The charity.

The money.

My mother.

My family.

Adrian.

It was like a puzzle that had been waiting years for someone to solve it.

"What happened at that meeting?""

Julian scrolled.

"Most records were erased.""

Marcus frowned.

"Erased?""

"Professionally.""

That meant someone had worked hard to hide it.

Caleb looked at me.

"Your father never told you about this?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

A painful thought crossed my mind.

Maybe my father had known.

Maybe he had tried to protect me too.

Maybe everyone had known except me.

I hated that feeling.

Like my own life was a story everyone else had read except the main character.

I stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, the city continued moving.

People were going to work.

Drinking coffee.

Living normal lives.

My world had changed overnight.

"Why me?""

The question escaped before I could stop it.

Marcus came beside me.

"What do you mean?""

"Why did Adrian choose me?""

He didn't answer.

Because he didn't know.

But someone did.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Caleb immediately moved closer.

"Don't answer.""

But I already knew.

Somehow, I knew.

I picked up.

"Hello?""

Silence.

Then a man's voice.

Older.

Calm.

"You finally found the photograph.""

My blood turned cold.

"Who is this?""

A pause.

Then:

"Someone who knew your mother.""

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"How do you know me?""

The man ignored my question.

"You need to understand something.""

His voice became serious.

"Adrian Whitmore did not marry you because he wanted your family's money.""

I looked at my brothers.

They listened silently.

"Then why?""

The man's answer destroyed every assumption I had.

"Because your mother left something behind.""

My heart raced.

"What?""

"A secret.""

The line crackled.

"A secret that can bring down powerful people.""

I swallowed.

"What secret?""

The man was quiet for a moment.

Then he said:

"The same secret Adrian's father tried to bury twenty years ago.""

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus quietly said:

"We need to find out what your mother left behind.""

I looked at the photograph again.

At Adrian.

At my father.

At the hidden history that had followed me into adulthood.

For eight years, I thought I was trying to escape my family's shadow.

I was wrong.

The shadow had followed me.

It had followed me straight into my marriage.

And now I finally understood the most terrifying truth of all.

May you like

Adrian Whitmore wasn't the beginning of my nightmare.

He was only the latest person trying to hide it.
