Chapter 9: The Boy Everyone Trusted

The police arrived within minutes.

This time, Officer Hill looked different.

More serious.

The photograph changed everything.

Not because it proved Ryan Carter was guilty.

It didn’t.

But because it proved someone had access to our family.

Someone was watching us.

Someone was close enough to take pictures.

That was no longer a school problem.

It was a safety problem.

Officer Hill examined the photo carefully.

“Where was this taken?””

“Our backyard.””

“When?””

“Yesterday afternoon.””

He looked at us.

“Who had access to this area?””

“Nobody,” I said.

He nodded.

“Then we need to check your cameras again.””

While he reviewed the footage, I watched my children.

Maya sat silently.

Jordan stood near the window.

They looked exhausted.

Too young to carry something this heavy.

I walked over to Jordan.

“You okay?””

He nodded.

Then shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

That honesty mattered.

“You don’t have to pretend.””

He looked at me.

“I spent my whole life trying to be the person everyone could depend on.””

I listened.

“And now I feel like I failed.””

My chest tightened.

“You didn’t.””

“But Maya got hurt.””

“That wasn’t your fault.””

“I should have done more.””

I put a hand on his shoulder.

“Jordan.””

He looked at me.

“You are her brother. Not her protector. Not her parent.””

His eyes filled slightly.

“You were never supposed to carry this alone.””

That was something I should have told him weeks earlier.

Maybe years earlier.

Because sometimes the strongest people are the ones we accidentally ask too much from.

Officer Hill called us over.

“We found something.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

He turned the monitor.

The camera footage showed our backyard.

The image quality wasn’t perfect.

But it was enough.

A person climbed over the fence.

Walked toward the house.

Stopped.

Looked directly at the camera.

Then left.

The timestamp showed exactly when.

And the face was visible.

Not clearly.

But enough.

Ryan Carter.

Claire sat down.

“Oh my God.””

Officer Hill nodded.

“We need to bring him in for questioning.””

“Can you arrest him?””

“Not yet.””

That frustrated me.

“But he was here.””

“Yes.””

“He threatened my family.””

“We need proof of intent.””

I understood the law.

But understanding did not make me less afraid.

The next morning, Ryan agreed to meet.

At the police station.

When he walked in, I understood immediately why nobody suspected him.

He looked calm.

Polite.

Respectful.

Exactly the kind of person adults trusted.

He smiled slightly.

“Mr. Bennett.””

I stared at him.

“You know who I am?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

He sat down.

“Everyone knows about your family now.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at Jordan.

Then Maya.

“It means everyone knows Jordan is trying to be a hero.””

Jordan’s expression changed.

Ryan smiled.

“But heroes make mistakes.””

I stepped forward.

“Why were you outside my house?””

Ryan didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“I wanted to talk.””

“At midnight?””

“Yes.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

He shrugged.

“I knew nobody would listen if I came during the day.””

I stared at him.

“You expected us to listen after sneaking around?””

His smile disappeared.

For the first time, I saw something beneath the polite mask.

Coldness.

“I was trying to stop things from getting worse.””

“By threatening my family?””

“I never threatened anyone.””

“You sent a warning.””

“No.””

Ryan leaned forward.

“I sent a warning because someone else was planning something much worse.””

The room went silent.

“What someone?””

Ryan looked at Ethan’s name on a file.

Then back at us.

“Ethan.””

I frowned.

“You’re blaming Ethan?””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

Jordan laughed bitterly.

“Why should anyone believe you?””

Ryan looked at him.

“Because I know who actually sent the message from your phone.””

Every person in the room froze.

Officer Hill leaned forward.

“Explain.””

Ryan looked directly at Jordan.

“Your phone wasn’t hacked.””

Jordan’s face changed.

“What?””

Ryan smiled slightly.

“Someone used your phone.””

The room became silent.

“Who?”” I asked.

Ryan’s answer came quietly.

“Someone inside your house.””

And at that moment, every person in the room had the same thought.

Someone we trusted.

Someone close.

Someone who had access.

Someone who knew everything.

May you like

I looked at my family.

And for the first time, I wondered if the danger had ever really been outside our home at all.
